What is the best metal album ever, in your opinion?

In shot it's the Anbernic RG476H, with the Musicolet player. Connected to the Kz Castor Pro.

I've been listening to metal bands since I was like... 12? Maybe more. It's very likely the genre I enjoy the most, and lots and lots of its subgenres. From technically impressive math metal, to chaotic deathcore.

And IMHO Toxicity, by System of a Down, might be one of the best, most balanced and well produced albums. The sound, the lyrics, the political context. Everything comes together to make this truly an amazing work of art. There's not one bad song in this entire album. I am biased, of course. This was... Like the third CD I bought, ever. So there's history, but also there's a tone of merit.

So, what about you? What's your favourite album metal? And if you don't like metal, what's an album you feel can be listened to without skipping a single song?

Please don't come to the comments to tell me how "I'm wrong". This is an OPINION. There's no objectively best music album of anything.

The ultimate DS set up!

Devices are Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ & Gamesir G8+

Ok, this is half shitpost, half "holy shit, this is actually kinda sick".

I recently bought the tablet for my wife and kid, for them to do digital art. It's a pretty nice deal, comes with the case and pen, and it works pretty well despite the kinda meh exynos chip it has inside.

But! The screen... This screen is insane. It's a very nice IPS, with a very dense resolution, at 13.1 inches!!! It's basically a small laptop.

So naturally my brain worms wanted to test it for emulation and my first thought was... This would be an absolute monster for DS. That resolution let's you run it at 7x integer scaled, and it looks fucking phenomenal. Each DS screen comes around to 6 inches!

The one down side? It's an insane combo. Both of them together weight around 1 kilogram. (2.2 pounds if you don't have free health care).

I may test this one further with other stuff. I'm curious about the performance. And while not the primary use case, I has an sd slot, so could easily load it up and have a small controllers for some nice local multiplayer on this very thing, big but quite portable package.

What do you think? What's the craziest set up you've built?

I need to rant about the missing crew characters

I'm not seeing any discussion about this here, and I'm about to go mad If I don't vent about this. I can't wait until the new trailers drop.

The poster still has shadows over characters. The official site shows a missing 5th member. We know we are getting at least one more. But I think we have at least one more incoming. Likely more.
If you go to the CPER S2 page you can see a grid of characthers. If you zoom in enough the grid goes 6x6. It doesn't go into carousel like it does on mobile. Speaking of which, it says 5/5 on mobile. I'm calling BS.

I believe the main crew will be at least 6. See the sides of Weak, and pictures 3 and 4. "oh that's just some random side characters" No no. Look at S1 poster. Rebecca and Kiwi are both back, to the side. And they're huge in the story.

My theory (skip if you don't want to read something that could be a potential spoiler?):

  1. Guy on the right of Weak: Either Ex military very tough guy, or ex corpo turned edgerunner.

  2. On the left of Weak: I feel this is another female character. So far Talia has been taking the spotlight on s2, with good reason, but I think there's gonna be another character to balance her out. A Rebecca to Kiwi type. But I feel this is gonna be like a more innocent, cheerleader type, with a lot of style, sort of like a streamer thing.

  3. On the side of D: These I believe are gonna be either minor character, side characters... or fodder for killing in the first episodes. From right to left, we can't really tell much about the first one, Could be a girl, could be along hair guy. No clue. Second one... I'd say it's a girl. There's... lets say clear evidence. And the last one. looks like a bold head, with some hairs or antenna, and the classic glowing anime glasses. I feel this is a mad scientist type. Maybe the crews ripper?

That's it, I needed to rant, cause I'm way too hyped about S2.

I wanna read your theories! Did I miss any info that has been public? Who do you think this people are?

Mr. Mobile reviewed the RG Rotate (among other tech)

And some other console made by a fascist, that I never heard off.

But as I keep telling you all, this things are breaking into the mainstream. More and more things like the Thor and the Rotate start to push with it's fun design into other tech niches.

It was a fun surprise to see this, as I think Michael Fisher is one of the most balanced reviewers. Being quite honest about his views on products, being very transparent with his sponsored videos, and quite sceptical of the hole AI tech craze.

Do you like seeing consoles outside of our niche? Or do you like the more serious approach of the tried and true reviewers of the community?

Mid year check; how many games have you beaten so far?

Devices are Retroid Pocket Classic, Switch 2, Galaxy S24+, Anbernic RG476H, and Legion Tab3. Also featured the Gamesir G8+. Games are listed on the spreadsheet on the last picture.

We are already past the first semester of this 2026 of ours, and while gaming has been... Stumbling. Retro gaming has been really good. Even with the increase in prices we got (thanks AI).

So obligatory mid year check, how many games have you finished so far?

I'm up to 26, which I was surprised it's in line with last year. By around this time last year I was at 25, but I don't think I'll quite make it to 65, like last year. I'm taking this year as an opportunity to play longer games, like Chrono Trigger and the over 60 hours I got into cyberpunk (which I'm honestly struggling not to go back to. I feel I could play that game for the rest of the year, and be happy).

But I'm also completing several trilogies. I did sonic at the start of the year. I'm doing the original Super Mario Brothers NES ones. And I'm planning on doing the Spyro trilogy later.

Talk to me, tell me what you have been playing? What games have you enjoyed the most?

I wanna see those lists, spreadsheet, trackers, and all that!

And as always... Go play some goddamn video games!

RAGR - Drill Dozer (GBA); GameFreak's forgotten gem

Game is Drill Dozer. Device is Anbernic RG 476H.

What is up, SBCGaming! Back again with another Random-Ass Game Review!

I finished the game yesterday, and today I need to talk about it. That game you always see youtubers show in reviews, but nobody ever finishes.

First off, yes. You read the title right. GameFreak, the Pokemon people, made Drill Dozer. Which you can very much tell the moment you listen to the music. But also, I found a really funny thing where there's an enemy boss of one level that ended up becoming a Pokemon later on. I have no proof, but also no doubts.

Now, for mechanics! This is a platformer where you pilot a tiny mecha with a giant drill. You jump around, kill enemies, break stuff, and find hidden treasure. It's not hard to grasp, but it's very satisfying going around drilling stuff.

The art style is very cute cartoon and, IMO, holds up really well. Plus using some soft shaders, like pixel transparency, it looks very nice and cozy.

The fun factor!
This game cartridge included RUMBLE! So when you pressed the drill button you got real physical vibration on the GBA. For me, that's crazy cool and it adds a lot of charm.

But the best part? You can use it on emulators! If your device has a vibration motor, and you're using RetroArch's mGBA core, you can go into Settings>Input>Haptics>Enable device vibration for supported cores. And now you're playing it just like the real thing!

I really had a blast with this game, so much so that I didn't mind moving my save from the Classic, to the Rotate, and then to the 476h (don't ask).

I need this to be more popular, cause IT NEVER GOT A SEQUEL! It was a one and done GBA game, and Gamefreak shelved it. And I need a sequel!

That's all. Let me know if you play it, if you played it, and what other games that are one and dones you can't wait to get a modern sequel.

And as always... Go play some goddamn video games!

Here's your, hopefully unnecessary, reminder to be careful around water with these devices

Pictured is the Retroid Pocket Classic, games are Pokemon Lazarus and Drill Dozer. Both GBA.

OK, I know. Duh, "you're not supposed to get consoles wet? Big genius over here". I know.

But shit happens. Accidents are a thing. Ok? I wasn't showering with the Classic... This time.

Last Thursday my Classic went for a swim. In a sink. I'm honestly still not sure how, It may have gotten caught on my jacket sleeve? The result was that my classic fell into a sink full of water. And it didn't just take a splash. Since I was completely caught by surprise by this, it took me like an extra second to process "it's the Classic, underwater".

So when I pick it up it looks like a fucking water bottle. If you have one, held one, or watch videos about it, you're aware the Classic is basically a bag of chips. It's like 50% air. So water was sloshing around inside like crazy.

So I take it out, and use the ports to drain as much water as I can, and I'm freaking out here. I press the power button. It's not dead yet. So I turn it off. If yours is off, don't turn it on. Mine was on sleep mode.

And this is pretty much the point of my post, what's the best course of action to save your device if something like this happens to you.

"oh I just chuck it into a bag of rice, right?" no. Rice is for risotto. Not electronics.

So step one: turn it off. That's what I did. Then I started shaking out all the water I could. Why didn't I immediately tear it open? I was at the office. So I still had to go back home. Longest commute of my life.

So I get home, and immediately grab my screwdriver set and get to...

Step two: open it up, and disconnect the battery. What kills the electronics isn't the water really. It's the shorts and the corrosion. So kill power ASAP.

Then I moved to...

Step three: disassemble as much as you can. Remove the SD cards, they're very likely fine. Clean contacts with a soft brush and isopropyl alcohol. Look for corrosion spots, especially on the battery and ground ports. That's exactly where I found a bit on mine. White or greenish build up. Clean it up.

"OK so now we chuck everything into rice?" NO! No rice! *cue the Edna Mode meme*

You're gonna lay all the electronics out and... Wait. Yeah, call me Tom Petty, cause the waiting is the hardest part!

The chips could have pockets of humidity that you can't see. Especially under the RF shields. There could be water trapped on the ports, etc. So wait. Like 48 to 72 hours.

This part was especially hard for me. The Classic housing had trapped humidity between the plastic and the screen section. So behind the OLED I could see clouds of moisture and water droplets. If you have those small soft usb fans, you can run it a bit to help the remaining liquid evaporate.

So all of this happened on Thursday. I waited until today, Sunday, to reassemble and test.

So after three days... It came back to life on a Sunday. I can't make this shit up. And since we don't have a Pokemon Jesus (yet), I thought it was very appropriate to test it with Pokemon Lazarus.

I'm honestly still in disbelief. I was sure that even if the board was OK, the screen would have been fucked up in some way. But no! Speaker, buttons, vibration, the ports! Everything still fucking works! It wasn't a flawless execution on my part though. At some point I managed to lose the power and volume buttons. Very annoying, cause I remember setting them aside, but clearly I wasn't careful enough.

But still, considering what happened, I'll pay that small price since I may be able to just replace them with 3D printed ones worst case scenario.

Hopefully you will never have to use this guide, but if you ever do, it may give the device the best chance of survival. Does it guarantee it will survive? Hell no, I got really lucky. But maybe you do too.

I am very happy that my little gameboy didn't die. I still put an order in for the Nova though 😂

Have you ever lost a device to water? Or some other freaky accident? Let me know.

And as always... Go play some goddamn video games!

Just... nowhere near water, please.

RG Rotate - First impressions and review plan

So I got the RG Rotate this past Friday, I feel like I got enough info to give you all a first impressions of what it is to use it.

First of all, some context. I'm reviewing the RG Rotate on two fronts, first and foremost: as a console. Duh, I know. Specifically as an easy to carry EDC, with a bit more power. An upgrade over the small Linux like the brick or 35XXSP.

But I'm also reviewing it as a DAP (that angle will probably be posted eventually to r/DigitalAudioPlayer and/or r/ConsolesAsDAPs. "But why? Just use your phone or a dedicated DAP!" I hear you, but also Anbernic HEAVILY marketed this thing as a dap, going as far as to include the cassette ui and all that. So I think it's fair to hold them to that.

Both of these aspects are gonna be compared against the Retroid Pocket Classic. Not because that's fair or anything, but simply cause that's my current EDC and I'm trying to make it a sort of replacement.

The review plan:

The RPC got turned off and stored away. That's right, I'm not halfassing this. I'm not gonna use my RPC for like a month. I transferred all my settings, saves, games and music to the Rotate.

Same for my Echo Mini dap. Stored away. I wanna truly see if this one can do it all. And before you ask, yes the RPC is an excellent DAP. Its only downside being it's a bit too big.

Now, let's begin:

The bad: if I'm gonna scare you off, I might as well do it first.

The Entire Audio Situation:

  • Speaker is located in the worst place possible, it's stupid easy to completely block the sound with a misplaced finger. And even if that wasn't the case, it just sounds bad. It's small and distorts very easily, just with game sounds, never mind if you listen to music.
  • Bluetooth audio is basically a dud. For gaming is absolutely a no go. It's just as bad as Russ showed I his video. I tested SMB for NES and you hear mario jump sound when he lands. It's absolutely atrocious. But even for music, using bt earbuds and putting the thing in your pocket starts to cut out and lose connection. That's something that hasn't happened to me since like 2015 with old cheap phones. And before you acuse me of using some cheap Aliexpress no name earbuds, I was using galaxy buds3 Pros, ok? These are absolutely great earbuds.
  • So just use headphones or IEMs right? Yeah, would love to. That's what I do anyway. But the lack of a jack is a huge pain in the ass. And I can already see you typing "just get a dongle bruh". I did. Two in, and neither worked with the Rotate. I'm waiting on my third now. The only way I could get audio from it so far was with a cheap pair of Samsung akg usb c earbuds. That's a huge pain for anbernic being cheap and including a shitty ass usb c on this thing.

The so-so: Battery life. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. It's also not GOOD. But I don't feel I have to run for an outlet every day. We'll see how long that lasts.

The good:

  • Screen: Yeah, even coming from the Classic. The screen is pretty good. It's not oled, but it's very sharp for the size and it's got enough brightness to be used outside.
  • Controls. I guess I got the lucky draw on the dpad. I red many didn't have a good time with it. But mine is precise, very tactile and clicky. Again, no complaints even compared to the Classic. Only bad thing are the shoulder buttons. They're pretty bad, cheap feeling and the l2 and r2 are way to small and hard to find. I might end up swapping them for the raised ones.
  • The flipping open thing: listen if this was released as a regular vertical, like an upgrade for the RG35XX I think it would have been well received (please anbernic do that already), but I think the fun factor of the swishing it open is definitely a winner. It's certainly what it got me to buy it. It's fun, it becomes smaller, but you can still use the screen. If it lasts, I can see this design sticking for a while.

So that's that for now. I'm gonna come back on July with my finals thoughts and a conclusion: can the Rotate be the ultimate EDC retro console and DAP combo?

Let me hear your thoughts if you have one, and if you don't why you didn't get it? And as always, go play some goddamn video games!

Consoles are RG Rotate and Retroid Pocket Classic. Games are Drill Dozer (GBA) and Pokemon Polished Crystal (GBC, rom hack). Frontend is ESDE, MinUI theme.

After much time trying and tinkering, this is where I landed

From top to bottom:

  • Nintendo Switch 2: For Switch and Switch 2 games.
  • Lenovo Legion Tab 3: For emulation in general up to PC and Switch games. Mostly used for PS2 and PSP, but sometimes I want to play a game with a heavy CRT shader on what is basically a mini tv.
  • Retroid Pocket Classic: My EDC. Emulation up to PS1, PSP, N64 and very light PS2 games. Mostly I do very retro stuff up to the 32 bit era, sometimes I stretch it past it's optimal use.

After a lot of trials I ended up selling/giving away most of my consoles. Some I really really liked, but couldn't justify keeping or didn't get enough use. But this 3 have stood the test of time and mostly don't make me want to buy anything else. (I mean I do have an order in for the RG Rotate, but that's a story for another day)

Past handhelds (in order):

  • PS Vita. Sold; Loved it. Didn't get enough use.
  • Anbernic RG35XX (OG). Gifted, when I got my next console.
  • Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. Sold; Probably my second most used console. Loved everything about this one, except the screen wasn't great and was a tad small.
  • Switch Lite. Sold; Now this one. This one was one of my favourites. Great size, amazing games. Really really good. But when I got the switch 2, and already having my wife's Switch OLED, I couldn't use my account on all three and this one fell unused quickly.
  • Miyoo A30. Sold; Before I got my RPC, this was my EDC. Loved this little guy. Only issue was the screen was too dim for outdoors. But the controls were so good.
  • Anbernic RG35XXH. Sold; Another one I really liked, such a good size. Really good quality over all. But I decided to part ways with it to get the RPC, and I don't regret it one bit. Maybe just a little bit because it was such a great Ape Escape machine.
  • Anbernic RG40XXH. Sold; This one is really good, I thought it would get more use, but it didn't click with me as I expected. Still a very solid one.

What about you all? I'd love to hear your journey with this little nostalgia machines. Let me know.

And also remember, go play some goddamn video games!

Happy Star Wars day, SBCgaming!

I'm back with another "Random-Ass Game Recommendation", this time Star Wars themed!

I got not 1, not 2, not 3, but 6 Star Wars games to recommend to you. So there's bound to be at least one of these that you like!

Let's not waste anymore time and DEW IT!

  1. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (GBA): This was actually gonna be my pitch for May GOTM, but since another GBA game won, we couldn't do it. But I'm not giving up on it, it's so worth a playthrough. You It's a 2.5D sidescroller beat m up, but there's a branching path where you can go through the story of episode 3 as Obi Wan or Anakin, and each character will have different missions and powers. It's really well animated, going for more of a attack of the clone series, rather than a movie realism, like the previous GBA game did.
  2. Star Wars Episode I: Racer (N64/DC): If you don't know about Star Wars racer by now, I don't know what you're doing. Go play it now (this is pod racing!). There's the N64 and Dreamcast version, so it should play on most stuff.
  3. Super Star Wars (SNES): The classic SNES platformer movie tie-in, a staple of a bygone era. Based on the original Star Wars, extremely unfair and difficult. This is for the Souls games fans.
  4. Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (SNES): Same deal as before, just with a better movie. Yeah, I said it. Come at me. Best cinema twist in history, shut up!
  5. Star Wars Arcade: The 1993 arcade game brings the best moment from the movies to the joystick. It's short and sweet, but worth playing.
  6. Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles (PS1/DC): This is for the Prequel memes enjoyer in your life. Like the movies, it's best enjoyed while drunk with friends.

That's all I got for you. Let me know if you play any of these. If you want something even shorter, there's the old java tie-in games, that are great to relive using J2ME, if you grew up with dumb phones, it's truly a trip.

Have a good week! Go play some goddamn video games!

Console is: Retroid Pocket Classic
