Voice-over or text for a game

I’m trying to decide on the overall feel for my game, The Lost Paws.

I made two versions of this scene:

  • one with voice-over narration
  • one with only text/dialogue

Which version feels better to you emotionally, and why?

I’m especially curious which one feels more immersive, cozy, or fits the atmosphere of the game better.

As a broke solo developer, I’m honestly curious how other small devs handle voice acting in their games.

My game relies heavily on narration and different object voices to help tell the story. The emotional atmosphere is a huge part of the experience, and simple text boxes just don’t create the same feeling for me.

The problem is that I’ve noticed a really strong negative reaction toward AI voices in games. In some cases, people seem completely turned off by a game the moment they hear “AI-generated voices,” even if they otherwise liked what they saw.

I totally understand why people value human voice actors, and if I only needed one voice I’d gladly hire someone. But as a broke solo developer needing multiple voices and characters, hiring several actors just realistically isn’t something I can afford right now.

So I’m stuck wondering:

  • Is some voiced narration with AI better than no voices at all?
  • Would players genuinely prefer silence/text-only over AI-assisted voices?
  • How are other indie devs handling this when budgets are basically nonexistent?

I’d honestly like to hear real opinions from both players and developers.

Hi everyone — I’ve been slowly working on an emotional game called The Lost Paws.

You play as a lost cat exploring a quiet black-and-white forest, helping animals, discovering hidden places, and slowly bringing warmth back into the world.

I’ve been trying to focus more on atmosphere and emotion than fast gameplay — the kind of game where you wander, listen to the rain, follow lanterns through the woods, and uncover small stories along the way.

A lot of the inspiration came from games like The Last Campfire, mixed with my love of quiet forests and wildlife photography.

The Steam page just went live and I’d genuinely love to hear what people think of the vibe so far.
