To those who have published a game, what were some parts of the process that were more difficult than expected?

Currently approaching something I would consider "complete" (it never is) now going down rabbit holes regarding crowdfunding. Also doing my research on printers and distributors. If it helps this is a wargame that would require just a printed book. Wanting to make sure there isn't some hidden facet of the process that will blindside me.

What feel does this cover give?

Edit: thanks everyone for the kind words. The project looks to embrace retro fantasy and all the camp that came with it. Hoping to have a rules doc to share soon!

Currently working on the cover for my RPG Skirmish game. It will use the classic dice of D&D and pathfinder to resolve combat and have players building out a party of heroes and hirelings. Hoping to tap into that retro fantasy aesthetic. Feel free to give C/C and let me know what vibe this gives off!

Dice, variance, and feel

Hello all, sort of a rant but also desperately seeking advice or perspective.

I have enjoyed game design as a hobby but a recent idea has taken off with me spending quite some time on it now. I have been working on an RPG skirmish game, combining TTRPG mechanics with a party based skirmish wargame.

My main sell is that it can be fully playable with 1 set of D4-D20 dice. And the current demo plays great but I fear it's missing something.

Right now combat is as follows:

Roll to hit is:

  • D20+mods x Targets "haste"(1-20)

Roll to wound(player and opponent roll simultaneously):

  • D8 sword vs D6 light armor

Or

  • D10 Firebolt vs D8 medium armor

Beating armor save is a wound, wound dice doubling armor save is 2 wounds.

This system is quick, but I fear it can feel swingy and it lacks some chunk and interesting mechanics that make other wargames sing. I've thought maybe there aren't enough dice being thrown to flatten out the curve? I'd love to hear what others think about this or if other mechanics come to mind.

Wargame Mechanics gripes or favorites?

Hello all!

I am hoping to collect some opinions for a project. In wargame design there are many mechanics to pull from and am hoping to hear peoples opinions on anything in the space that particularly you or stands out as a fun system.

Some examples for myself:

  • Custom dice. not as fun when I have to track down and make sure I have enough for whatever game im using. and normally the dice serve to restrict probabilities than offer new ones.

  • Fiddly bookkeeping and massive wound pools. Masses of tokens arent my favorite, and some wargames can get silly when tracking a unit with 20+ wounds.

As far as what ive enjoyed:

  • I really dont know where else ive seen it but Trench Crusades blood dice system is very elegant, makes for great crunchy decisions it what is a very soft ruleset.

Please do share your opinions! I am hoping to publish a platest soon for a Skirmish game that I have been working on for sometime now, but not here to advertise anything just yet :).

RealID still in the mail, I have a hole punch and paper ID. What to expect?

Hello all, I have a RealID in the mail, with the receipt as well. Currently have a temporary paperID and my old plastic one with a hole punch. I have gone ahead and done the ConfirmID prepay. Anything I should expect for my TSA checkin? We are arriving to the airport about 2 hours before our flight. Hoping that should be enough time to get cleared through the line.
