Bill Connors - Add Eleven

Bill Connors - Add Eleven

Connors initially caught the attention of the wider jazz world in 1973 when he joined Chick Corea's pioneering fusion band, Return to Forever. He played electric guitar on the groundbreaking album Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy, helping define the band's early high-energy, jazz-rock sound. He left the group after a single album and tour, paving the way for a young Al Di Meola to step in. After leaving Return to Forever, Connors pivoted sharply toward intimate, lyrical acoustic and classical guitar work, recording for the prestigious ECM Records label. In the mid-to-late 1980s, Connors returned to the electric guitar, leading a stellar fusion power trio that frequently featured virtuoso rhythm sections like bassist Tom Kennedy, and drummers Dave Weckl, and Kim Plainfield. This era yielded several sharp, highly precise contemporary jazz-rock albums, including Assembler (1987), which features standout fusion tracks like this one, "Add Eleven".

Donald Byrd - Places and Spaces

In the early 1970s, as jazz fans debated the merits of electrification, Donald Byrd leaned fully into the sounds of rhythm-and-blues, soul, and funk. He teamed up with the visionary producer brothers Larry and Alphonso "Fonce" Mizell. The result was the 1973 album Black Byrd, a monster crossover success that became the best-selling album in the history of Blue Note Records up to that time. While strict jazz purists critiqued the commercial direction, audiences loved it. Byrd followed this streak with immaculate, beautifully produced jazz-funk albums like Street Lady (1973), Places and Spaces (1975), which featured eternal grooves like "Wind Parade," "Change (Makes You Want to Hustle)," "Dominoes", and this brilliant track, "Places and Spaces". While teaching at Howard University, Byrd formed a band with his top music students called The Blackbyrds. He produced them and secured their publishing rights, leading to massive global hits like "Walking in Rhythm" and "Rock Creek Park."

Pat Metheny Group - To the End of the World

Since bursting onto the scene in the mid-1970s, guitarist and composer Pat Metheny has refused to be boxed into a single genre. His work effortlessly spans across bright, melodic jazz fusion, avant-garde experimentation, acoustic folk-jazz, and sweeping cinematic soundscapes. Formed in the late '70s alongside the brilliant, late keyboardist Lyle Mays, the Pat Metheny Group pioneered a distinct, globally-influenced sound. By blending lush synthesizers, acoustic instruments, complex time signatures, and wordless vocal harmonies, they created some of the most vibrant, uplifting, and recognizable instrumental music of the 20th century. He is famously adventurous with his gear. Whether he's playing the custom, multi-neck Pikasso guitar, making a guitar synthesizer cry like a horn, or performing alongside his massive, mechanically-automated Orchestrion project, Metheny is always pushing the boundaries of what a guitar player can do. He isn't just respected; he is historically decorated. Metheny holds a stunning 20 Grammy Awards, and he is uniquely the only artist in history to win Grammys in ten different categories.

Herbie Hancock - Heartbeat

This specific era (roughly 1973–1976) represents one of the most commercially successful, creatively explosive, and polarizing periods of Herbie's career. Having shattered the boundaries of jazz with 1973's Head Hunters and pushed structural limits with 1974's Thrust, Man-Child marks a fascinating shift in his sonic evolution.

When Boney James and Rick Braun teamed up for the Shake It Up album back in 2000, it wasn't just a gimmick, they genuinely had a special communication going on where you could tell they were feeding off each other's energy. It works because their styles just fit together. Boney handles that melodic, soulful tenor sax, and Rick brings this bright, sharp trumpet and flugelhorn sound that cuts through the mix perfectly. On the record, they aren't just taking turns playing solos; they're constantly trading lines and pushing each other to build up the intensity.

Noisehunter is one of those classic, German heavy metal bands from the '80s that flew under the radar for a lot of people outside of Europe. They actually started way back in 1976 under the name "Noise," but had to rebrand to Noisehunter once they realized another band was using the name. A pretty cool piece of their history is that they were actually one of the first Western metal bands to tour, Communist East Germany back in 1989, right before the wall fell. They eventually split up in the early '90s.
