psa: RANK MORE SCHOOLS

I know this is a hot topic on this sub and I welcome thoughts down below. However. I was convinced at this time last year that Princeton was THE place for me. I did not match there. I was initially a little disappointed I didn't match to my number one (yes, this was awful of me).

I am halfway through my first semester and I am so freaking thankful I am where I am. I am now utterly convinced this school I prestige-ranked (yes) is my place. The pool of quirky, fun, cool people (or whatever your niche is) is huge, and some of them will get into each school you rank, which means you will, more than likely, find your people at any school.

So by all means, apply to a school strong in your major, in a place you can see yourself living in, etc, but also, acknowledge that, unless you've spend considerable time (not just a visit!!!) at all the QB partner schools (impossible), you don't know what life there is like or what it's like to be a student there. The school you think 1000% is the only place for you might be a great place for you, but so will at least a few other QB partners too. The opportunity to rank up to 15 schools (I did 13) is huge—finding out where I was going to college (for free) on December 1st was the most relieving thing in my life—so please, take advantage of it.

Keep Swiss number while abroad

hi everyone,

I will be moving in a few days abroad for my studies, indefinite stay. I would like to keep my Swiss number for Twint etc and to be able to receive confirmation codes because all my accounts are linked to it. I am also keeping my Swiss bank account and the phone number might be relevant. I am not sure.
I will of course be purchasing a local number and using that for my data and etc.

does anyone have any suggestions as to how to do this as cheap as possible?

I’ve heard prepaid works well but will I be able to receive SMS? my phone has dual SIM possibility.

i am currently on Yallo Black plan (good experience but shittiest customer service ever beware) for which I actually have unlimited data in the US (where I am moving) for 24.90 a month but I will need a US number anyway so there’s no point in staying on it. it has a 3 month notice period before cancelling but of course I want to transfer my current Swiss number for whatever solution I find

if this is a stupid idea and I should just give up the Swiss number, please tell me. I’m 18 and stupid! this just sounds right but I’m worried about getting locked out of my accounts. I don’t want to waste money!

yale summer study abroad

Are the offerings usually consistent or do they change year-to-year? As in, is it safe to look at the Summer 26 offerings and assume the same options will be true in Summer 27? I'm looking particularly because which summer language programs are offered might impact my choice of language in the fall.

thought i was stealth, please help me

I just graduated from high school. I pass 100% of the time and haven't had any issues with misgendering or whatever in years. I know students who have been at my school for a while of course know, but I thought / think newer classmates did not know. Over dinner today to my shock a friend (not a close friend) asks "Are you trans?"

Given that I'm never asked this ever I really didn't know how to respond. I was shocked and I mumbled confusion and left. Another friend at the table told the friend who asked this was inappropriate but then said something about how a girl who was new to our school had been asking people this and this signalled to me that this friend knew I was trans despite my never ever bringing it up. I was literally at the beach shirtless (peri, no scars) with her today.

I'm shocked and kind of going down a crisis hole right now. I'm scared about all these random people in the world (classmates primarily) whom I thought were not aware potentially being aware. I'm moving continents for college and I don't know what to do. Of course, there are friends from HS I will stay friends with, they are close friends, but I'm freaking out now over the paper trail behind me: people who think it's ok to ask around if I'm trans (apparently the aforementioned classmate), yearbooks with my deadname in them (my school refused to change it as long as I hadn't done so legally which I could only do at 17), and I'm just having a freakout that people know this behind my back and I feel stupid.

I really need some form of support here. If I'm ever asked this again, what do I say? I suppose I should have lied or whatever but I was genuinely completely in shock. I thought I was stealth to almost everyone. Is there anything I can do to limit the fact that I'm trans ever being known? I'm terrified that this will follow me throughout my adult life and that I'll never be able to feel normal (and mind you, I feel normal 99% of the time nowadays. I literally thought this was all behind me until this one question happened and I'm spiralling.) Do I talk to this girl again? Do I tell her she's wrong or what? I feel doom because from the other friend's reaction it seems like this is known to some people because of the one girl who went around asking about me. I just don't know what to do. If I ignore them maybe it's suspicious. It's summer and I objectively never have to talk to these people again after college but I just don't know what to do. I don't want anyone to be able to trace back that I'm trans ever again.

getting a student job

Hey,

Prefrosh here—I know that Yale Student Jobs recently opened and have browsed a couple of jobs. There aren't a ton on there. I definitely want (need) to work an on-campus job next year. I'm looking for advice: should I try and get a job now if I see something interesting? Or should I wait? Will "nice" jobs like library jobs etc open later on and do they get snapped up very quickly/are they competitive? Does anyone know how scheduling works? I know it's a max of 19h a week and I'm primarily seeing stuff that's 10-15h/week right now.

Grateful for any advice! Thank you!

Edit: I noticed when applying to a job (clicked out of curiosity) it requests that I input times I'll be available to work. Therefore, does anyone know when I'll know that? Is it after class registration is done in late August? Am I overthinking by worrying that's late?

Keeping Swiss bank account abroad

Hi,

I'll be continuing my studies in the US next year. I am already a US tax resident because I have dual citizenship (US & Swiss). I currently have an account at BCGE, but am wondering what to do as I move. I would like to keep a Swiss bank account because it's my home country and I plan on coming back and working in summer etc (for which I need a Swiss IBAN to get paid, including for this summer when I will likely receive my salary after I leave) and also because I'm very unfamiliar with the US banking system and haven't figured out how to deal with opening a new account yet etc.

Does anyone have guidance on keeping a bank account open? I was thinking I might have to switch to UBS but then I've heard people say it's fine to stay with any bank as long as you can receive mail (such as changing to a relative's address) and making a few transactions. I'm really not sure and haven't heard any advice. I currently pay zero banking fees because I'm a student and I would like to maintain that if possible. What should I do? Should I switch to UBS, or stay at BCGE? Do I need to tell them I'm moving or will that just fuck it up? Pls help and thank you!

Hey,

I know there are tonnes of DS/not DS questions on here, but I'm hoping I can get some words of advice, given that I couldn't attend BDD and therefore haven't been able to talk this over with people in the know.

I definitely want to major in history, and I'd like to explore a double major. So far, cogsci and EP&E seem super interesting. I know double majors aren't as common as they are elsewhere, and I'm aware I might wish to stick with history or do something completely different later on, but at the moment, I really like the idea of history and something a bit more practical. (I also have an internal debate about whether double majoring will mean I take less advantage of Yale's literally legendary history department, but that's another thing.)

In any case, in my first year, I'd like to have the chance to take a few classes outside of my usual humanities focus, i.e., econ (which I haven't taken before) or something cogsci related (such as intro cog sci, maybe intro comp sci or neuro or something like that). In addition, I definitely want to take an L1/L2 language (depending on my placement test results, bc I might pick up a language I have a base in already) and possibly continue my mother tongue at L5.

I know DS is 3 classes and therefore I'd only have space for a 4th...?

My dilemma is that I do have intellectual interest in DS, am a good writer, etc., etc., and I feel like I'd enjoy it and do well. I've looked through the syllabus, and I have always been someone who'd enjoy reading the "classics", and the idea of understanding these literary and philosophical works is very attractive to me. I did a summer course last year focused on two works of Renaissance philosophy in a discussion and writing-based setting, and I really enjoyed it—I assume DS will be similar. Still, I'm worried that taking DS will limit my chances to explore outside of my prospective major in my first year, and thus that the benefit of taking it won't really be worth it. Hence, I'm not sure if taking DS makes sense for me....I do wonder if part of why I want to do it is that it seems like the "right" thing to do? I didn't know about DS when I applied to Yale, and my interest was immediately piqued when I found out about it, but it's also something I could def do without.

I was initially a very "I'll do history and nothing else" person, but then I got into Yale and have seen the wealth of courses I could possibly take (and also became an adult and realised it would be helpful to be employed), and I really want to make the most of my chance to explore different things, before I probably narrow in on stuff later on. I'm curious about the BA/MA in history down the line, which I know will make coursework more intense, and therefore it seems even more important to take advantage of the first 1-2 years.

Tbh I'm just lost, I'm the first person from my school to be admitted to and attend Yale and I have zero familiarity with what my priorities should be. I saw someone on here asking about GPA and DS and that didn't even occur to me. I think I'm definitely just overwhelmed with the options I have (a position I'm very happy to be in!!)

Any words of advice would really be appreciated.
