Gotta respect the grind.

The DaYan Guhong Pro+ is still quiet

This post is for the benefit of anyone googling for a quiet 3x3 cube. The DaYan Guhong Pro+ is at least as quiet as it's predecessor (the Guhong Pro), and markedly lower pitch. A bit quieter if anything. This is based on a side-by-side comparison of the maglev versions of each, but I'm sure the respective spring versions would compare similarly.

So, this remains a good choice for someone specifically looking for the good quiet cube. Or a quiet good cube.

That is all.

Hope you weren't too slow...

The Dayan seems to be gone everywhere, but if you want the Diansheng Neo, Speedcubeshop has the primary internals version, and The Cubicle has the black internals version. But not for much longer...

The Cubicle also has the old Diansheng, which pops like crazy, but they have a mod kit to help somewhat with that. That may get you by for a bit until a good version is available again. There is also a fancy transparent version of the Neo which actually looks pretty sick but obviously not tournament legal. The ShengShou, QiYi and LanLan technically exist.

A different way to save clock

There's a lot of passion and anger right now about the WCA decision to remove clock. That makes it a perfect time to channel that energy into efforts to support it as an unofficial event. If you really love clock, you can still support it even if it lacks the prestige of official WCA inclusion.

Many competitions include unofficial events. That's part of how FTO built its community and the momentum to be included in the WCA. People who know the puzzle are required to advocate for and run those events. If there are comps in your area, offer your time to help keep clock alive there.

There's a site, cubingcontests.com, and an associated piece of open source software, RecordRanks, which is used to support unofficial cubing events. I don't know much about it myself, but it includes records, rankings, calendars, and other features that are necessary to support former WCA events, future WCA events, and niche events that are unlikely to ever be included. Even banana!

Can you code? You can help improve the software! Can you type? You can enter data! Are you good at writing? Efforts like this always needs copy writers. Know multiple languages? Any project serving an international audience needs translations. Are you organized? You can manage projects and track events.

Are you simply a level-headed person? Discords, discussion forums, subreddits, etc. always need moderators and admins. If you have any artistic experience, you could make a logo that's better than the stupid one I threw together in 5 seconds.

Cubing, and clock in particular, includes a lot of young people. Is that you? This is an opportunity to learn a useful skill (like coding) while supporting something that you're passionate about.

Helping support unofficial events doesn't have to come at the expense of efforts to reverse the WCA decision. Almost 4000 people have signed the petition in the past couple days, and if even 1% volunteered a few hours a week, there would be plenty of hands to keep clock alive and help other unofficial events at the same time. Even in event that clock gets reinstated, none of this effort will have gone to waste - other communities will benefit.

Enthusiast 14500 thrower

Primary use-case is the novelty of a very small thrower. I have an SFT-25R equipped D3AA which I like, but a single emitter setup should obviously have more throw. It doesn't seem like Hank has anything quite in this niche. Anduril preferred but having another UI is not a deal-breaker.

Edit: I may dare to be stupid and just get the smallest LEP I can find.

Identifying an old cube

Found this behind a desk when moving. I think this is from around 2013 or earlier. Maybe a lot earlier. IIRC this was around the time when stickerless cubes were becoming popular but weren't yet allowed in competition. I wasn't deep into cubing at the time, though. Measures 57mm, no magnets, colors darker than most modern cubes. Dayan rings a bell for the brand, but that could be totally wrong.

Pictured next to a matte RS3 M V5 for color comparison.

Edit: Dayan Zhanchi.. Thanks all!

Matte Finish + Maglev (3x3)

It seems like maglev is almost always paired with UV coating these days. I've recently tried a couple versions of the RS3 M V5 and I prefer maglev over springs, but really hate the UV coating. I like matte/frosted but anything non-UV might be OK.

It looks like some older GANs (12 and 13) have matte+maglev combinations, and the V100 does as well, but not the 16. Weilong V11 does not have a matte+maglev combination, nor does the RS3 M V5. Dayan Guhong Pro / Pro+ has non-UV glossy with maglev, which isn't bad. I didn't find others among the recognizable brands.

Any I'm missing among relatively current cubes?

Mysterious extra trees?

So, I started a new save today, and I noticed it had fewer trees in some locations compared to older save files. For instance, there are these four extra trees at the Bus Stop in the older saves. Since one of them covers up the bus ticket thing, I have to assume these extra trees are not originally supposed to be there. I don't see them in other screenshots of the bus stop.

I don't think I planted the trees, because these are not plantable spots, and they're in the same spot in two different save files, and I don't remember using an exploit to plant them, and I don't have any mods. Whatever added these trees is reproducable because they're in at least two save files. One of the save files was created in the last week or two, so it's not an issue with an old version of the game. It appears that they were added some time during year 1.

Are these caused by the green rain? Green rain adds a bunch of temporary trees. Did some become permanent and revert to new normal trees? Does chopping down one of these green rain trees cause a tree to regrow as a normal tree even if it wasn't the location of a previous normal tree?
