Looking for a term to describe a small snippet of a sentence
I'm not sure this even exists, and I'm having a hard time googling the answer.
Consider the following sentence: "I will start going on walks as soon as my neighbour moves away, otherwise I shall never leave my house again."
If I wanted to refer to only the first part of the sentence (everything before the first comma), how would I do so?
I'm asking because I need to clearly communicate the issue with a similarly structured sentence in a contract (I'm a law clerk). I think "clause" is the best answer here, but unfortunately, it refers to something different in law (a paragraph, basically).
If there is no better answer, that's fine. May just end up just saying "part"
