Uber comfort / uber black should have an option for cars with NO regenerative breaking. I would pay money to not be carsick.

Just got out of a 40 minute nauseating Tesla ride in stop and go traffic. I had my head out the window, mouth watering trying not to puke. I don’t blame the driver, totally understand wanting to have a more economical/ energy conserving setting while driving all day. But I would pay 20 bucks extra on a 40 minute drive if it meant I could avoid having to get in a Tesla, nearly puking and being sick for an hour after drop off.

Any info on why northbound trains are delayed suddenly

is this actually 10 minute delays or is it a serious issue that’s going to creep up to 30+ minutes of delay

Does anyone have positive stories about their career in biotech?

I feel like all I see here is people talking about how awful the job market is, how terrible pay is, bad work life balance, terrible management, and just a mediocre quality of life while working in a career path that takes a lot more education and hard work than a lot of other options.

I’m in my first year at a biotech startup and I feel burnt out already. My pay is mid for the amount of time I spend in lab and I know I’m going to have to leave sooner or later to get my PhD if I want to continue with my so called “passion” for science. I felt so motivated before starting here and now I just feel like every path forward that I hear about ends up sucking in one way or another.

Edit: for context my first job out of college was with a big pharma company in one of their “early career programs”, which they cut funding for just 5 months into my time there. So just a year and a half in, and I’ve been laid off with 20 of my peers, and navigated applying for jobs in this shitty job market twice. Some of my immensely intelligent coworkers from that original program are still looking for jobs. That’s one reason why I’m feeling so shit about this field.

Foldable scooter under 35 lbs… that can also handle 20% grade hills?

I live in San Francisco. My apartment is on the 4th floor (no elevator). I’m done with taking 80 minutes both ways to commute to work and my apartment is too small for a bike, so I want to get an E- scooter, if one exists that fits my needs.

My current commute: 0.5 miles up a 20% grade hill to my train, 30 minutes on the train, and 1.5 miles on flat ground to my work. Price is no issue. It would cost $650 a month to pay for parking + bring my car up here, so a $1000 scooter would pay itself off in a month and a half.

I would need a scooter that could be reasonably transported up my stairs (preferably under 35 lbs but I know that might be wishful thinking ), could be portable on the train/ bus, but be powerful enough to make it up that 20% grade hill. Does a magical scooter like this exist? Thank you.

Old mentor told me to leave my high paying RA job to pursue a PhD asap.

I graduated from undergrad last year, and have been working for a year. Initially, I joined an early-career program at a large biotech company, but that program was cut after a few months due to funding. I was lucky enough to get a new job 3 months ago as a research associate at a biotech startup.

The position pays 93k a year, with benefits. I have a small amount of equity in the company that vests in 4 years (in the hypothetical situation they sell). I have the opportunity to publish in a major journal this year (an opportunity I didn’t have at my old company). I am given a lot of control over my research. I feel taken seriously and respected by all my coworkers, even though many of them have PhDs or have been in this industry for decades.

I recently met up with a mentor from the large biotech I worked at. She just retired. First thing she asked was “When are you getting your PhD?” When I said I wanted to work a bit longer because I liked my job, she told me that I’d be making a mistake choosing to push it off until later rather than applying next cycle.

I do want to get my PhD, that hasn’t changed. But I also don’t want to go straight into a program now when I feel I have so much I can learn and a lot of room for growth in this position…while actually being paid. Also—I just am NOT ready to go back to school yet!!

Her explanation was that the longer I stay out of school, the more money I’ll make, and the harder it will be to go back to making zero money and being a student. That it just gets harder and harder as the years pass. This does make sense to me— having a salary and benefits and not living off of a students income is so nice. Now I’m stressed that I’ll never end up going if I wait 2-3 more years. I just need honest advice from someone who’s done this before. Do I just bite the bullet and apply soon?

My best friend is dating her direct manager at work. I cannot stand to be around him and it’s ruining my friendship with her.

My best friend and roommate (23F) is dating her direct superior at work (29M). He is a very intelligent, charismatic man, and founded a small company that he sold to the big pharma company he now works at for 300 million dollars. This is my roommate’s first job out of college. She met him before working there at a networking event, and he ended up getting her an interview for a very lucrative position at his company. Long story short she thought he was cute, they got drunk at a company party, and hooked up consensually.

Obviously, there’s some very sue-able HR violations going on here, and there was a lot of awful gossip about my friend because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut about sleeping with her. People definitely knew what was going on but he’s so well liked and favored by higher ups that no one reported it.

I don’t like him because I’ve had the wonderful chance to get to know the guy and have seen him for the egotistical controlling freak that he is. Not only does he manage her work but he manages every aspect of her social life. He made my friend cut off all male friends of hers. He tracks her location when we go out just the two of us and follows us there, uninvited. He throws adult male temper tantrums whenever my friend tries to have a “girls night” without him. When we do get the chance to go out together, he physically puts himself between the two of us so she just has to talk to him. She’s made no new friends in our city, and no chance to make them because he doesn’t let her.

Recently, her and I grabbed dinner after work and ended up meeting up with two of my male friends from college. These are guys I’ve known for 6 years now, and who my boyfriend and brother are good friends with. We ended up chatting and eating with them and went home after about 2 hours. Unsurprisingly, when my roommates boyfriend found out about this encounter, he threw a fit. He stormed through our apartment, slamming doors, yelling at her how “fucking unacceptable” her behavior was along with a bunch of other dramatic things about this absolute nothing of an encounter. I hid in my room until my roommate came and found me and apologized for his behavior.

She always agrees he’s out of line when stuff like this happens, but then makes no move to try to separate herself from him or set up boundaries. He can talk his way out of anything with her— even the start of their relationship when he talked about sleeping with her with the people they both worked with. I love her but I’ve started to avoid hanging out or going out with her so I can avoid her abrasive parasite of a boyfriend. I don’t want to abandon her because then he would win in isolating her from anyone that’s not him. But I also am so exhausted of his presence.

How does anyone make actual friends here? Am I missing something?

I’m 23F. I moved here about a year ago. I thought by now I’d have at least a group of some sort. Maybe 2 friends. I have basically none. I like my roommate, but she spends her whole life with her boyfriend. I’ve tried making new friends, I’ve gone to hobby classes, different shows, workout classes, random organized events I see on Partiful, and I have yet to make one genuine friend. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve met girls I get along with when I go out— but it always ends up with us getting together once or twice for an outing, maybe going to drinks or a show as a group, and then it just fizzling out. I do keep trying to follow up. We all have such different schedules and it just ends up not working. And no one texts me first. I seriously think I could disappear and no one here would notice. I just want one friend. I have a long distance boyfriend who I see once every 2 weeks. I like him but no man can replace the fulfillment I get from hanging with my girlfriends.
