Old 2 stroke Merc - what to do about rust

The outboard has sat for a while (supposedly winterized for long term storage).

Current plan is to spray some penetrating fluid on the spark plugs before pulling to see how the piston walls look.

Thoughts on the bolts around the cylinder head though? Should I just leave them be and spray some oil on them to stop the rust from getting worse?

Rest of the engine so far looks alright.

Some photos from the 4.0 timing chain job

Engine runs great so far. Having trouble shifting gears, so not sure what's causing that. Something in the clutch assembly must not be fully disengaging. All new parts there though.. If anyone has any suggestions that'd be sweet.

Ended up doing more than just the timing chains, so took a bit longer than expected.

Easiest way to confirm the valves aren't bent?

4.0 SOHC from a 2001 Ranger.

Pulled the engine to change out the timing components. Before pulling the engine it ran alright, but had a noticeable rattle on startup and when revving. It ran normal when idling though. No error codes either.

Had to remove the camshafts and broken timing components before I could spin the engine over by hand to check the timing marks.

What's the easiest way to double check that the valves are okay? I don't think it jumped time, otherwise it probs would have run poorly or had misfire codes.

Note: I don't have an air compressor, so not sure a leak down test is an option.

4.0 SOHC with a timing chain rattle. New tensioners didn't fix it either unfortunately. It's not always there, sometimes startups are fine, sometimes they're not. It definitely seems to happen pretty often if I rev up to 3,000 RPMs but is generally okay otherwise while driving.

I know nobody can really be certain of how long it will last, but any ballpark estimates? I've heard some people suggest that these engines rarely jump time, and others say you shouldn't drive at all on a rattle.
