Ranked History of Top Raider Rivals

##HONORABLE MENTION: The NFL. One might say the Bengals, Bills, or Buccaneers, but there are 31 teams in the National Football League.. and then there are the Raiders.

#10. Colts

##Colts lead all-time series 12-11. Series tied 1-1 in postseason.

These teams first met one another in the AFC Championship game for the 1970 season, with the Baltimore Colts winning 27-17, eventually holding the Super Bowl trophy weeks later. The Raiders later defeated the Colts in the 1977 divisional playoff round.

Over the next two decades, the teams met sparingly until matchups increased to nearly every 3 seasons around the time Peyton Manning was drafted (who had a 3-2 record vs. the Raiders while with the Colts).

On Christmas Eve in 2016, Indianapolis linebacker Trent Cole broke Raiders' 3rd year 'MVP-caliber' quarterback Derek Carr's leg just after the team had clinched the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. They did not win their playoff game, their move to Las Vegas was announced the following off-season, and they would not have a winning record the rest of their time in Oakland - and just one more winning season/playoff appearance with Derek Carr overall.

From 2018-2023 the Raiders and Colts would face off in 6 consecutive seasons. The Colts won the most recent matchup in 2025 with a score of 40-6.

#9. Dolphins

##All-time series tied 21-21-1. Raiders lead 3-1 in postseason.

The Raiders were the Dolphins' first ever opponents in 1966.

They would eventually meet in the 1970 playoffs, with Oakland coming out on top 21-14.

In week 2 of the 1973 season, the Raiders ended the Dolphins' historic 18 game winning streak (which would stand for another 30 years). The Dolphins then beat the Raiders that same season in the AFC Championship game en route to winning their second consecutive Super Bowl.

The following season, the teams met again in the 1974 divisional round, appearing in what's now known as the "Sea of Hands" game, ending the Dolphins' Super Bowl streak. In week 2 of the 1975 season, the Raiders ended the Dolphins' 27 home-game winning streak.

In 1983, the Raiders were blocked from trading up to draft Stanford quarterback John Elway. They stayed put & drafted the All-Pro center Don Mosebar at pick 26, while the Dolphins then went ahead and drafted Hall of Famer Dan Marino at pick 27. Marino would make his NFL debut in week 3 that season, losing to the Raiders.

The teams met again in the 2000 playoffs, with the Raiders winning 27-0. The Raiders have gone 3-12 vs. Miami since then, including a week 16 loss in 2020 which knocked the inaugural Las Vegas team out of playoff contention.

#8. Rams

##All-time series tied 8-8.

From 1982-1994 both of these teams played in Los Angeles, meeting 5 times in that span. The Raiders dominated the series 4-1.

Although the Rams were established in Cleveland, they had been home to LA since 1946. In early 1977, the Oakland Raiders won their first Super Bowl in Pasadena, which is where the Rams would go on to lose against Pittsburgh in LA's first Super Bowl appearance just 3 years later.

Unfortunately for the Rams, the Raiders moved to Los Angeles shortly after, becoming the first and only team to bring the city a Super Bowl over the next 4 decades.

Both teams have relocated twice since then, with some feeling the Rams and Chargers played a part in sabotaging the Raiders' return to LA, forcing their hand in Vegas. Since the Rams have come back to Los Angeles they've now become just the 2nd team ever to win a championship for LA & a Super Bowl in their home stadium.

#7. Seahawks

##Raiders lead all-time series 30-26. Series tied 1-1 in postseason.

The Seahawks started as an AFC West Team in 1976, & would sweep the Raiders in 1983 before losing to them in their first ever playoff run later that season. The LA Raiders would go on to win the Super Bowl, but Seattle returned the favor by defeating them in the 1984 wild card round.

In 1986, the Seahawks defeated the 8-5 Raiders 37-0 toward the end of the season, thwarting a potential turnaround and keeping them from the playoffs.

In 1989, Raiders' first ever quarterback & 2-time Super Bowl winning head coach Tom Flores would become the Seahawks GM/President. He would become their head coach as well in 1992. The Seahawks joined the NFC West in 2002.

Seahawks' Super Bowl XLVIII MVP Malcolm Smith signed to the Raiders in 2015. Following that season, Oakland native & fellow Seahawks Super Bowl champion Marshawn Lynch announced his early retirement; only to unretire in 2017, demand his release from Seattle, and join his hometown Raiders.

In the 2010's, longtime Raider fan favorites Marcel Reece & Sebastian Janikowski would both have short stints in Seattle after their time in Oakland.

The Seahawks' 2013 Super Bowl winning head coach Pete Carroll was hired with the Raiders for the 2025 season in which they ended with the league's worst record, prompting his dismissal after one year.

#6. Steelers

##Raiders lead all-time series 17-16. Series tied 3-3 in postseason.

Officially the Pittsburgh Steelers since the 1940's, this team would have an overall postseason record of 0-1 until the 1972 playoffs, thanks to a controversial game against Oakland known as the "Immaculate Reception" (or deception depending on who you ask).

The Steelers would then lose to the Raiders the following postseason. In 1974, Hall of Fame Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw approached Raiders owner Al Davis, requesting a trade be made for him. Davis - who at one time coached alongside Steelers' head coach Chuck Noll in San Diego - suggested to Noll that he give Bradshaw more playing time. The Steelers would then go on to beat the Raiders that postseason en route to winning their first Super Bowl title.

The Steelers again beat the Raiders in the 1975 playoffs to win another Super Bowl. 1976 would mark the teams' 5th consecutive playoff matchup; an AFC Championship game that the Raiders won before finally claiming a trophy of their own.

The Raiders would beat Pittsburgh again in the 1983 postseason just before winning their 3rd Super Bowl title.

#5. Chargers

##Raiders lead all-time series 69-62-2. Raiders lead 1-0 in postseason.

Both franchises started in 1960, however the Chargers originated in LA before their move to San Diego in 1961. Al Davis was under Chargers head coach Sid Gillman before leaving for the Raiders in 1963, changing the culture overnight.

In 1969, hall of famer Ron Mix was the first Charger to have his number retired. He unretired to play for Oakland in 1971, so his number was then unretired by Chargers' owner Gene Klein, who 'despised' the Raiders.

In 1978 the teams played in a controversial game known as the "Holy Roller", pretty much ending the Chargers' playoff hopes for that year. They would later meet in the AFC Championship game for the 1980 season, with the Raiders advancing to and winning the Super Bowl shortly thereafter.

Following the Raiders' Super Bowl collapse, the Chargers went on a 13 game win streak against them from 2003 to 2009, with one of the Raiders' losses even resulting in the firing of a head coach.

Just before the Chargers relocated back to Los Angeles in 2017, the Raiders had also expressed interest in LA as a potential future option. The Chargers then accepted the Rams' offer to share SoFi stadium, essentially pushing the Raiders to Las Vegas.

In week 18 of the 2021 season, the teams met in a match in which the winner would go to the playoffs, or in the event of a tie, both teams would make the playoffs. The Raiders were in position and willing to end the game as a tie to the benefit of both teams. However, when the Chargers called a timeout instead of letting the clock run, the Raiders then kicked a field goal to win 35-32, advancing to the playoffs and sending the Chargers home.

Las Vegas beat LA 63-21 on Thursday Night Football in 2023.

#4. Patriots

##Patriots lead all-time series 20-18-1. Patriots lead 2-1 in postseason.

In 1976 the Patriots beat the Raiders 48-17 in their only loss of the season. The Pats would lose to Oakland later that very year in the playoffs, just before the Raiders' 1st Super Bowl title. The playoff loss was surrounded by controversy regarding a questionable roughing the passer call on Patriots defensive lineman Ray Hamilton.

In a 1978 preseason game, safety Jack "The Assassin" Tatum hit Patriots receiver Darryl Stingley, paralyzing him in a freak accident. This was just shortly after Stingley had negotiated a high paying contract he was to sign after his visit to Oakland.

After New England defeated the LA Raiders in the divisional round of the 1985 season, Patriots GM Patrick Sullivan came chirping in Raider linebacker Matt Millen's ear. Matt naturally punched the GM in the face. There is a photo.

In 2001, after Drew Bledsoe went down early in the season, backup Tom Brady led New England against the Raiders in his first ever playoff game. Fellow Michigan alumni Charles Woodson sacked Brady, forcing a fumble & all but securing a Raiders victory. A rare & defunct call now known as the "Tuck Rule" reversed the expected ruling, with the Patriots then leading a comeback to win in overtime.

The Patriots would go on to win their first of 6 Super Bowls, whilst the Raiders traded their head coach Jon Gruden to the Buccaneers after the playoff loss. In week 11 of the 2002 season, the Raiders beat the Patriots 27-20, helping knock them out of the playoff hunt. The Raiders would go on to lose the Super Bowl that year to Jon Gruden & the Buccaneers.

#3. 49ers

##49ers lead all-time series 8-7.

Originally known as the "Battle of the Bay". The 49ers have been around since 1946, starting at Kezar Stadium, sharing the venue with the Raiders in their inaugural 1960 season. In 1961 the Raiders played just one season at Candlestick Park, where the 49ers would eventually move to in 1971 until its closure in 2013.

The Raiders found success earlier in their existence, bringing the Bay Area 2 Super Bowls before San Francisco's 1st in 1981. The reigning Super Bowl champions would then lose the 1982 season opener to the now Los Angeles Raiders. SF would go on to win 3 more rings in the 1980's. In 1994, a year before the Raiders moved back to Oakland from LA, they lost to the 49ers 44-14 in the season opener at Candlestick. The 49ers would go on to win their 5th Super Bowl that season.

Future Hall of Famer Jerry Rice left the 49ers to join the Raiders in 2001, the year he became the first NFL player with 200 touchdowns.

In 2011, after years of incidents the NFL banned all Raider/49er preseason games due to a shooting that occurred between fans. The ban would stay in effect until the Raiders moved to Las Vegas in 2020.

#2. Broncos

##Raiders lead all-time series 73-58-2. Series tied 1-1 in postseason.

Facing off since 1960; the Broncos ended the Raiders' 17 game winning streak in 1977 after both teams started 4-0 that season. The Raiders beat them weeks later, but would eventually lose 20-17 in the AFC Championship during Denver's first ever playoff run.

In 1988, down 0-24 on Monday Night Football, the Raiders came back and won 30-27 in overtime. This was with head coach Mike Shannahan, who would be fired the following season & end up joining the Broncos' staff - eventually winning 2 Super Bowls as their head coach.

The teams faced off in the 1993 season finale, only to meet again in the playoffs the next week; Los Angeles winning 42-24.

After a MNF showdown in November of 1999, Lincoln Kennedy & Charles Woodson got into a snowball fight with fans at Mile High Stadium, leading to an arrest warrant & citation for the future hall of famer.

In October of 2015, Charles Woodson finally intercepted Peyton Manning for the first time since both entered the league in 1998, finishing the game with 2 picks total off the 'Sheriff'. Both would retire at the end of that season, with Manning winning another title for Denver along the way.

In 2016 Broncos corner Aqib Talib ripped a chain off Raiders receiver Michael Crabtree. It happened when the teams met again in 2017 and that time it turned into a fist fight on the field.

In October of 2024 the Broncos won 34-18 to end their 8 game losing streak to the Raiders.

#1. Chiefs

##Chiefs lead all-time series 76-56-2. Chiefs lead 2-1 in postseason.

The Dallas Texans were established in 1960, and would become the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963. After the Chiefs lost to the Packers in Super Bowl I, the Raiders would lose to the same team in Super Bowl II. The Chiefs and Raiders then faced off the following postseason, with the Raiders winning 41-6 but later losing to the (Super Bowl winning) Jets in the AFL Championship.

The following season - in John Madden's first year as head coach - the Raiders swept Kansas City and won the conference, but the Chiefs beat them in the AFL Championship to go on and win Super Bowl IV. From then on, the Raiders dominated 24-15-2 until the Chiefs would sweep them in 1991, while also defeating them a 3rd time in the Wild Card round.

In the late 1980s former Super Bowl MVP Marcus Allen was benched by Raiders' owner Al Davis for a personal gripe he had with the player. Allen then joined Kansas City in 1993, making it to the AFC Championship & winning the Comeback Player of the Year award. Chiefs' backup quarterback Rich Gannon would join the Raiders in 1999, helping defeat Kansas City at Arrowhead for the first time in a decade & later becoming the league MVP in 2002.

The Raiders ended the Chiefs' 9 game winning streak against them in 2007. In 2014, after starting 0-10, Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr won his first NFL game against the 7-3 Chiefs - hindering their playoff eligibility in the process.

After a 5 game losing streak to Kansas City, the Raiders beat the Chiefs 40-32 in their first matchup of 2020 (the Raiders' inaugural season in Vegas), also marking the team's first win at Arrowhead since 2012. After the game, it was reported that Raiders head coach Jon Gruden had their team bus driver do an extra lap around the Chiefs' stadium.

Kansas City would again dominate the series thereafter - even implementing a "ring around the rosie" style play in a helpless Raiders defeat - until a flashy Raiders victory on Christmas day in 2023, which would end another 5 game losing streak.

Mark will still be the controlling owner

"Should the deal be approved, Davis will still be the controlling owner, with 36% of the Raiders, and Durban will be the largest minority owner, with over 11%, according to a person familiar with the ownership of the Raiders, who asked not to be named because the matter is private"
