Mara of the Bitter Water soaking up some rays

Mara of the Bitter Water soaking up some rays

She's headed for the breeding cabinet very shortly. Because she's one of my indoor birds I am taking her out every day for some extra sunlight. They do get some sun through the open window but I am taking a little extra precaution to ensure she definitely has good levels of vitamin D built up, which she'll need to pass her eggs safely.

She is a cinnamon violet heritage clearwing, to be paired with Little King Richard, a red violet heritage clearwing

Chloe

One of my 890245 budgies (jk only got 42 at the moment)

Young lady with an underbite, believe to be the result of a mite problem in the nest which lead to some early nutritional deficiency, absolute disaster of a thing to happen. You can't really see it in the pic but her top beak tucks into her lower beak. She should be fine, can eat fine etc, but she's gonna tag along to the avian vet next week anyway just for a check, along with her siblings.

She's a dominant pie with not much obvious pied markings, I call this the half-arsed pied.

Tips on preserving budgie skeleton? Macerate or not?

Apologies if this sort of question has been asked often before. I have here one of my Australian bush budgies who unfortunately died unexpectedly and was thinking of preserving her skeleton. I've previously only dabbled in taxidermy; this will be my first time preserving a skeleton.

I've had a look at the guides in the sticky and they say that maceration is not a good method for small animals like this and unless I completely missed it I couldn't see anything pertaining to small birds. Yet if I google around, maceration is recommended. So I'm a bit lost and would love to hear from someone who has actually worked with small birds before.

Thanks

Disco budgie!

Queenie the Bush Budgie back when she was in quarantine when I first got her and I was going around shining a UV light on all my birds to see which ones glowed the most (blue series glow the least)

She was just looking at me like "wtf kinda home have I come to now...."

Australia to vaccinate vulnerable native birds against bird flu

Australia will soon begin vaccinating its vulnerable native birds against the deadly H5N1 bird flu as the virus spreads more widely after first being detected ‌in the country in June, the government said on Tuesday.
The vaccine rollout will begin in the "coming days and weeks", with an initial focus on priority species in captivity, Agriculture Minister Julie Collins told reporters in Canberra.

Little purple man

Youngest of the clutch, just left the nest this morning at 5 and a half weeks old, his brothers and sisters have all been out for more than a week.

When he was about 12 - 16 hours old I had to handfeed him, sometimes the youngest can miss a feed because the older siblings push in so I always monitor for that, but then we had a mite problem in the nest when he was hatched. I was able to identify the problem and solve the issue so after that everything went fine, but when this guy was 6 days old, he looked like a 3 day old. I was about 95% sure he wasn't gonna make it.

He never got banded because I was too busy worrying about him, banding was the last thing on my mind.

Anyway.

He's now the biggest one of the lot, beautiful violet colour, happy and healthy, loves his scritchies.

Name ideas welcome.

Australia confirms H5N1 bird flu spreading in native bird population

SYDNEY, July 29 (Reuters) - Australia said on Wednesday the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus is ‌being transmitted locally in the native bird population, raising concerns that the disease is beginning to spread more widely after it first appeared in the country in June.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Julie Collins told a news conference that transmission had occurred between greater crested terns in South Australia state.

"While there remains no evidence of any mass mortalities at this point in time, ‌we do expect, with this local transmission, that there will be further detections in Australian wildlife," Collins said.

There were currently no infections in Australia's poultry industry, she said.

Four states in Australia have detected cases of the strain that has spread through wild bird and mammal populations globally since 2021, killing millions, infecting poultry and dairy farms and some farmworkers.

Does AusPost still send notifications when a delivery is on board?

They always used to, for every delivery, but for the last few deliveries I've not had a notification and this has unfortunately resulted in a parcel being stolen. (fucking meth heads will watch and follow the delivery van, you gotta be fairly quick if you're getting something delivered here)

So have they stopped sending the SMS notifications now or what?

She loves to nap in the palm of my hand

Tigerlily is one of my recent babies and without a doubt the best bird I've ever bred in terms of temperament. So sweet and gentle. But um.... I'd like my hand back, Tigerlily!

(no more budgies from me today, I promise!)

My new budgie

Had to make a trip into Toowoomba yesterday, as I was leaving I thought I'd just swing by the pet shop because I needed some more pellets and lo and behold, they had this one young Australian Heritage Clearwing lady. The staff were able to tell me her exact age and a bit about where she came from (you don't usually see these in pet shops, unfortunately the breeder had to quickly shut shop due to some serious life circumstances). By far the cheapest I ever paid for one of these too! What a find!!

Haven't named her yet, she's hanging out in quarantine for the next 30 days and then she'll be introduced to my small but growing collection of Heritage Clearwings.

My first time seeing tawny frogmouths in the daytime!

I see them just about every time I step outside at night, but only just recently managed to spot them in daylight for the first time ever

Why does my budgie eat so much, particularly during the night?

I've got a young 5 month old budgie, Goldboy. He was handraised by myself along with his 4 siblings. He was always a big eater. When they're around weaning age, it's normal for them to not always finish their formula dinners (as they start to explore eating on their own), and so I would give the remainder of the syringe to Goldboy, even if he'd already had his tucker, because he'd be chirping for it.

Anyway, so he's significantly larger than his siblings. Not just weight, his stature is large.

Now, I manage his weight by limiting seeds and overnight there are only some pellets there in the bowl. I've been remiss in not taking his weight before making this post, however I am not overly concerned about him getting fatty diseases as his primary intake is pellets and leaves, although I am wondering why he always gets up to eat at night where the others don't.

His appetite is non-stop. He eats through the day, through the night.

I'm open to taking him to a vet, it's just that he's healthy and thriving, on a good diet, and I'm only really wondering if this is something I should investigate further?

He did get wormed a few weeks ago and it's made no difference.

Baby budgie surprise

One of my recent babies. Is a cinnamon! Took me by surprise. Mum is one of my own bred violet pieds, dad is a grey pied not bred by me - never would've guessed dad was split for the cinnamon colour. What a happy finding, as I was actively looking to pair her with a cinnamon man but couldn't find one available (or so I thought....) Photo doesn't do good justice but with cinnamon budgie mutation, the stripes and wing markings will be brown instead of black.

I'll post more photos of this stunning young lady as her feathers continue developing.

What seed is this?

Keep seeing these bean shaped seed things appear in my yard, they are hard and shiny like rocks. They appear underneath my Bottle Tree but are not Bottle Tree seeds. The only other nearby trees are mulberries and crepe myrtle. Approx 1cm - 1.5cm length.

NSW confirms first case of deadly bird flu strain H5N1 on Mid North Coast

>The first suspected case of H5 bird flu in NSW was found at Bennetts Beach on the state's Mid North Coast yesterday. (ABC News: Carly Cook)

>An infected giant petrel was found near Hawks Nest, on the state's Mid North Coast, yesterday.

>Tonight, testing at the CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness confirmed the bird had the high pathogenic avian influenza.

And this bit too is interesting

>Dr Coombe said what they had seen so far from the petrel birds migratory pattern, which had been mapped, was "a little bit of an anomaly".

>"They've come up from the subantarctic," she said.

>"We always knew that was a risk but this is the first time that has occurred.

>She said the Bureau of Meteorology had advised that weather events may have caused them to go "a little off course", ending up closer to the Australian coast.

>Surveillance along the coast has been increased, with 500 additional staff trained to assist.
