Australian Birding App

Hi all, please delete if not allowed.

For the last ~5 months I've been working on a birding app for Australian birds. I had some frustrations with some of the other applications and being a software engineer for over 10 years, I thought this would be a fun little project and a way to learn more about birds.

Some other people showed some interest and I've just hit ~500 users on iOS and Android has just released today. It's still in very early stages but it'd be really nice to get some feedback on the application.

I've been spending the last month and a bit building a light sound model that can be used on most devices that I'm just putting the final touches on as well and should be hopefully done by the end of this month. This will bring sound identification for birding, similar to Merlin.

The app is completely free at the moment and will remain that way for the foreseeable future until I release a feature I feel like is worth it.

The application is BirdUp Australia

Also, as a note, I did see the other Australian birding application linked here. It looks like we were on the same page and probably experienced the same frustrations with other applications.

Early-morning Kookaburra getting breakfast

Blue-winged Kookaburra (Dacelo leachii). Seen and of course HEARD around the campsite at dawn and dusk. This one was in a paddock on a stump, looking for some breakfast, which it grabbed soon after this photo was taken. Both these and the more widespread (?) Laughing Kookaburra can be seen (and heard!) here in Bowen, Qld.

ID request, looks like a magpie cross butcher bird.

I feel like I often see this lovely bub in my backyard. I often watch it and when it notices it stares at me for a minute then goes back to what it's doing.

Today it was on my lawn when I went out to pick up some dog poop. It was about 5meters away and it just stared at me

ID Request in Point Cook, Melbourne

I see plenty of Cormorants around here but I've never seen one like this. It makes a clicking noise I've never heard before either. Thanks in advance

Is there Anything wrong with this fella?

I was going to a park yesterday and I noticed this big lad on a fence. Thought it was kind of strange that it was that low. I approached and got really close and he didn't seem to be that fussed. I didn't wanna test the beak so I went back on my walk. Came back and he was trying to sleep on the fence, didn't seem right so I think he was sick but I don't see anything obvious.
