Can you repurpose Zigbee/Zwave receivers from defunct hubs?

I just bought a lot of Lowes Iris kits on eBay, and they come with a useless hub (I got it for the keyfob which is long discontinued).

I have a soldering iron, and am wondering if zigbee/zwave receivers can easily be repurposed.

I’ve searched google and Reddit and no one seems to have asked this before. Google’s AI tells me no because it’s soldered, but that’s not a problem for me.

Can you repurpose receivers? Print a case and it’s good? Basic entry level programming?

Would be great if I can but if not, it’s soldering practice and spare power cables if anything. I’m suddenly about to inherit 6 of them!

No neutral, mmWave and Hue Bulbs - How Many Bypasses did it take you to get it to work?

Read this yesterday and finally understand how electrical and no neutral switches work: https://homesmart.sg/guides/neutral-vs-no-neutral-smart-switches/

And I realize that I am going to need to get a bypass if I am to get my mmwave switches to work without a neutral.

I have read that one will work with the dimmer switch, but keep reading “multiple” with the mmWave with some people voicing frustration that two didn’t work.

I need to place an order with Aartech in Canada for these and want to get it right the first time. I don‘t know how much wattage the Inovelli bypasses “absorb” and how much power the Inovelli mmwave will have running through it at all times, so it’s hard to calculate.

How many bypasses did it take for it to work?

How do you turn off the PowerKeyboard

To type this from my phone I’ve had to push that little six circle symbol with the triangle.

How do I turn the thing off so it actually disconnects.

I know it goes into sleep after 5 minutes, but that’s sleep. Holding the power button does nothing. Supposedly holding the power button for 3 seconds resets it.

I am dumbfounded or not picking up on something very obvious.

Flickering When Activating Hue Scenes on Non Hue Bulbs via HA - Double Check Hue Bridge Updates First

Leaving this here because I imagine in the next couple of days there’s going to be people asking what’s going on with their lights flickering when activating hue scenes via a HA automation, button press, etc.

Before you get worried… double check to see if your hue hub is updating bulbs/plugs and have all those updates go through before trying to fix anything.

I had a perfect storm of setting up a remote to trigger an automation and for HOURS couldn’t figure out why my bulbs were flickering on to off and a number of other annoying things.

It may fix itself after your hue bulbs update.
I suspect they aren’t acting as repeaters anymore while updating.

Here’s some other things I did:
- when adding a hue scene to automations/scripts make sure to select “activate hue scene” instead of “activate scene”. There is something different in how HA treats them

- in light off automations/scripts, don’t choose turn light off and then select each individual bulb. Select the symbol that has multiple lightbulbs that is named after whatever room you have set up in home assistant

- (not new but info for those who don’t know) when using non-hue lights on the hue hub, make sure to have the scene activated more than once. I put a 15 millisecond delay between both times. Non-hue bulbs don’t receive messages the way hue bulbs do and you need to activate the scene more than once to get the brightness and colour correct.

(Also as of posting this, there is no release notes but many of your bulbs and hue plugs will update to 1.163.1. I don’t know what this update adds. What I will say is that it is the slowest hue update I have had. One bulb seemed to not update since yesterday but did after I turned the power on and off as I was doing something to a light switch. So unscrew your bulb and unplug your hub if it is stuck loading the update for 24 hours).

Do Aboriginal Equivalents of Chinese Benevolent Associations Exist in Van?

Chinatown historically (and I think some still exist) has various Chinese benevolent associations that are representative of different regions and acted as resources for people originally from those areas that found themselves in Vancouver.

I am wondering if the same exists in Vancouver for the various Aboriginal communities in BC that have large urban aboriginal populations.

There are many of us who in one way or another work with Aboriginal youth, and hope to support re-establishing connections to their culture and community. Culture can vary significantly and connecting a youth to the friendship center doesn't mean that they will be connected to their culture. So I am hoping to come up with a list of nations that have an active presence in Vancouver.

(that active presence may be a single person employed by a band that walks the DTES looking for their people or bands that regularly host events in Vancouver for their people living here)

Another warning about Switchbot

I had got the new Switchbot eink weather station and had left a negative review due to a myriad of issues. I was happy with them at first because they seemed to fix some of the issues after the review.

After the review, I got an email offering a refund of the product plus another free product. I declined because I wanted to keep my review honest and wanted a way to give them real feedback which it seemed like they were genuinely considering. I even updated my review to be more positive after they made updates.

Well my review has been removed and I went to go back and leave a new review… and I’m blocked from leaving a review on the thing.

I generally trust Amazon reviews (except for Vine), but they are definitely doing what they can to get every negative review removed and hide that they are bribing people for positive reviews.

I would return this if I could but my return window closed yesterday.

As you will see, they clearly have many bugs to continue to sort out. It still shows yesterday’s weather (despite them telling me they fixed that), it doesn’t show the correct time (an hour behind), and worst of all… it is populating my calendar with an event that actually starts the following day.

I’m quite frustrated at this thing and hope that one of you will figure out a way to use this device for something else. I am willing to figure out making my own TRMNL display instead of this.

This isn’t the first thread in this community about how Switchbot is gaming the review system. I wanted to leave this here so when people search for Switchbot, they see it.

Without real reviews, how do they expect to actually improve it. Clearly they aren’t testing it properly because the wrong time and completely incorrect importing of an ics calendar should have been caught.

With Miele UltraColor FloralBoost and Febu, Febu is doing the work

(I wish I had a before and after photo to truly show the magic of Febu)

So I got Miele UltraColor FloralBoost after learning it had Dnase and had washed yellowed pillow protectors adding Resolve Gold (I think this is the Canadian equivalent of Biz). They were still yellow.

I washed them again using both the Miele FloralBoost and Febu that I recently got, and some how some way all the yellow is gone.

I know I went extra by using both the Miele and Febu, but having previously used the Miele, I suspect that the formula isn't optimized (or maybe not stable as I have read posts from some of you knowledgeable folks talking about the difficulty of creating stable liquid formulations).

Anyways, I didn't think that a spoonful of Febu would do anything, but it definitely does do something.

In the same load I had a duvet cover that had a spot of blood that was pre-treated with a resolve spray, and it looks like that is gone. There seems to be another streak of blood that is faded on the duvet cover that wasn't pre-treated and is faded, and I will run it through the laundry again some time to see what happens.

Other information is that I have a Miele washer and dryer.

If you're Canadian looking at options with Dnase, I would say Febu is worth it. The Miele UltraColor FloralBoost... at its premium price you can probably pass.
