Nine years later and I still think about this music video. Kyle Thrash is the man. The Menzingers - "After The Party"

What a way the music video completely transformed the story of the song.

"You don't care if anyone is watching just as long as you stay in motion."

It takes what started as free-spirited fun and spins it into toxic complacency.

Anything wrong with relying on a DI for small gigs? Seems like a lot of bassists are running DI nowadays.

Longtime bedroom guitarist but new gigging bassist here. I have a gig coming up Friday with my new band. We're a four-piece indie rock band, and we're playing a 75 cap room.

I have a Fender Rumble Studio 40 that I bought a couple years back because I didn't imagine I'd ever play bass outside of my home. It really is a fantastic amp. Modern modelling is impressive.

I dialled in an amazing Ampeg SVT 8x10 model that sounds great running XLR out on the church stage we practice at. We practice with IEMs, but we'll be playing with wedges.

  1. Will I run into problems relying on the wedge + 40W speaker to monitor my sound? I fully expect that 40W amp to be useless live. Is this a non-issue with a competent sound guy?
  2. Are there pitfalls relying solely on the PA system for bass? Or is this commonplace nowadays with Sansamps?
  3. I've run into tone varying wildly (generally overly boomy on-stage) between my bedroom with the amp speaker, my bedroom with my DT 770 PRO 80 headphones, the IEMs at practice, and the room sound out the PA at practice. I fear that my sound could be way off at the show. I can try to tweak it on the fly during sound check though, but again, not sure if my monitor will sound completely different from the PA.

My bandmate has a GK 400RB-III 2x10 combo that I'm debating bringing as backup, but I'd like to run with my own gear to see how capable the rig is.

Wiring Idea: Swap tone knob and strangle switch functionality to implement Reverend's Bass Contour Control.

I think the Bass VI sounds very bass guitar-like at 50% tone. I almost always have it parked here.

I never use my strangle switch. The effect is way too dramatic IMO. However, I think it would greatly benefit from having a sweeping control to blend the bass cut. The bass contour is incredibly useful on my Reverend Crosscut, but I never go past about 20% travel with it.

I'm daydreaming about turning the strangle switch into a 50% tone cut and changing the tone knob into a bass contour.

I've never done any wiring work, but I think it would be a fairly simple wiring change.

Who knew 7-strings could do Midwest emo?

Tuning is CEGDGBD. The next metalhead who picks up that 7-string is in for a surprise.

Anyone here play in Eb Standard?

My band is considering covering The Killers and most of their songs are half step down. I'd like to try just playing the songs in standard, but I'm curious if anyone regularly plays in Eb.

My Bass VI has flats on it, so I think it should have enough tension to work. Curious what others have done with off the shelf strings.

Bass friends, guitarist here who got tapped to play bass in a four-piece indie rock band with my Bass VI. Those of you who play a Bass VI with a band, what bass amps would you recommend for a tight and punchy tone?

I have a Vintera II Bass VI with La Bella flats. Stock with the exception of a Panorama tremolo.

I know tons about guitar amps and tone, but bass gear is foreign to me. We're starting to play shows, so I'm trying to get more of a foundation on tone options.

The lead singer/rhythm guitarist is primarily a bassist, and let me borrow his Gallien-Krueger RB400-III 2x10 combo for our first show. I had never even heard of this brand before (that's how out of touch I am with the bass world). It changed my life.

I boosted low mids, zeroed presence and high mids, greatly lowered treble, and slightly lowered bass. I played using my middle+bridge pickup (no hum) with tone at around 60%. I had written off the use of the bridge pickup in the past, but it really sounds amazing when paired with the middle.

The tone was incredible. It was tight and punchy and had an amazing growl to it. Cut right through the mix and still felt full.

The GK is awesome. But I want to know what other amps people recommend to capture that low mid growl. I found that the Ampeg SVT just sounded a little rounder and less direct, but I didn't mess around too much.

I have a Fender Rumble Studio 40 and the modelling is great. I was able to nearly duplicate his RB400 by modelling a GK RB800 and boosting 250 Hz low mids and using a 2x10 cab IR. The XLR out to the PA system is super convenient, and I might just run with this for our next show.

Is this a pretty common rig and should I just stay with it? Are there other great options I should try out that I might be overlooking?

Dunlop Tortex Triangle picks have changed my life.

I bought Dunlop's bass pick variety pack, and the purple Tortex Triangles have a massive impact on tone. These picks coupled with La Bella flat wounds make my Bass VI sound huge. Some of the best money I've spent.
