On To Book 2!

On To Book 2!

Just finished Book 1, on to Book 2! Also going through Genki with a class, which is probably plenty, but the JFZ series is so fun, I have to do that too! I’m a middle-age parent, who’s done a lot of cool things, but to me, finishing this book is right up there!

Only been studying for about 9 months, but most of my good memories are working out of JFZ on Saturday mornings 🙂 When initially self-studying Genki totally discouraged me, JFZ was right there to hold my hand. I guess you could say I’m a JFZ fanboy!

Thank you George-san & Yukari-san!

Video/Audio for Beginner Sentence Construction Drills?

Hello,

Looking for a (free, hopefully) video or audio which asks for simple sentence construction in English, pauses, then provides the correct answer in Japanese as a way to drill my speaking output. I usually ask AI these types of things, but it was not that helpful. All the better if it’s integrated with Genki I. Things like: 土曜日に、たいていレストランにすしをたべます。

Many thanks!

Want to Study Japanese in Minneapolis? The Time is Now!

Hello! About a year or so ago I was conversing on this sub with people in Minneapolis who wanted to study Japanese in a formal setting with a credentialed teacher, but at the time the options were pretty sparse.

I’m happy to report that the Japan America Society of Minnesota (JASM) has recently started offering a whole curriculum of beginner Japanese! I can attest that the instruction is top-notch. It’s like getting university-level instruction at adult-learner speed. And, to top it off, we have a monthly happy hour where we meet for fun at Izakaya Kazama!

So, if you have been thinking about picking up Japanese language study in the Twin Cities, now is a special time! Hope to see you! Feel free to ask any questions.

ありがとうございます😊

David Hinton: alternative to “China Root”

I will just shoot straight here: I find David Hinton’s work frustrating. On the one hand, I find his effort to renew Chan teachings in the west very admirable and his intentions are very stimulating. His whole project is very cool but the hangup for me lies in its execution. I really want to like his work (I purchased nearly all of it).

For example, in China Root” which is mostly his own prose and exposition, I find him to be maybe not the best at didactic discussion. He gets really stuck on his neologisms for Taoist concepts, imo. Even though his translations of Chan works (particularly of the transliteration of ancient teachers) is somewhat irritating, those are okay.

Ok my main question: is there a book in the spirit of China Root but maybe written by a trained academic/teacher?

I’d really like to read a deep discussion of how Chan was influenced by Taoism. I do like Guo Gu’s lectures on this.

Dokusan in Sesshin: Do you always do it?

Hi everyone,

I’m practicing in sesshin this weekend and it got me curious: do you always go into dokusan no matter what? Even if you don’t have much to ask/say? Do you sometimes take a pass? Do you just feel it out in the moment or go by your own policy at every retreat? Has your approach to it changed over the years?

I have my own approach, so not looking for didactics here, just genuinely curious how others approach this, for whoever’s willing to share. It’s kind of personal so it doesn’t come up much at sangha.
