UPDATE FOR BEAVERTON SCHOOL DISTRICT PARENTS - PLEASE READ

Hello Parents of children in the BSD,

I am part of the Beaverton School District Safe Tech Coalition, a group of concerned parents/community members/doctors/etc. helping to raise awareness about technology use in Beaverton schools. The FINAL school board meeting of the 2025/2026 school calendar is this coming week, and we wanted to share a few important updates and opportunities to make your voice heard.

1. Upcoming School Board Meeting & Public Comment

The next Beaverton School Board meeting is coming up next week on Tuesday, June 9 at 7PM. We encourage supporters to attend, submit public comment, or watch the meeting. Are you interested in speaking? Please reach out and I can walk you through the steps. It's not hard, and we will be there to support you!

As we have seen over the past several months, community engagement is making a difference. District leaders are listening, and continued parent participation matters.

2. District Screen Time Update

The district recently published an update regarding its technology review process.

While we are encouraged that the district is acknowledging parent concerns and discussing screen time, the update does not include a specific implementation timeline beyond "fall," nor does it provide concrete details regarding screen time limits, accountability measures, or how changes will be implemented across schools.

We remain hopeful that the district will provide additional clarity and measurable commitments in the coming months! Please reach out to the board and your district rep, school administration to voice your concerns. You can easily find your school board rep here: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/school-board/board-members

3. Parent Feedback Survey – Deadline June 11

The district is currently collecting parent feedback through its annual survey. The survey closes June 11.

Question 15 includes an opportunity to provide written feedback. If technology use, screen time, digital learning tools, or device policies are important to your family, we encourage you to share your thoughts. This is one of the most direct ways for district leadership to hear from parents.

4. Help Us Reach 1,000 Signatures

We are incredibly close to an important milestone. We have a petition, which outlines our goals for safer use of tech in classrooms, and we currently have 921 signatures, which means we need just 79 more signatures to reach our goal of 1,000 before the next board meeting. Please consider signing and sharing the petition with friends, neighbors, family members, and other Beaverton School District parents. Link is here: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/make-beaverton-school-district-devices-safe-for-students

Thank you for your support, advocacy, and willingness to engage in this important conversation. Together, we can continue working toward thoughtful technology policies that support both learning and student well-being.

Thank you,

Beaverton School District Adopts Controversial, Lawsuit-Plagued i-Ready for New K-5 Math Curriculum

If you have kids in the BSD - please read! Action items below:

Last night, the Beaverton School Board officially voted to adopt a new K-5 math curriculum that includes i-Ready, a program currently facing a lawsuit over student data privacy concerns. During the meeting, the curriculum selection committee was unable to answer basic questions including:

  • How much screen time are elementary students currently getting during the school day?
  • What is considered developmentally appropriate screen time for a Kindergartner?

This is about far more than one program. The adoption of yet another tech-heavy learning platform reflects a much larger problem inside our schools: excessive screen use, lack of transparency for families, and wildly inconsistent technology practices from school to school.

Teachers are being asked to manage constant device use while also trying to teach in overcrowded, underfunded classrooms. Parents are left in the dark about how these programs are actually being used day-to-day. Meanwhile, students are spending more and more of their learning time staring at screens instead of engaging directly with teachers, peers, books, discussion, creativity, and hands-on learning.

We are not anti-technology. Thoughtful, intentional tech instruction absolutely has a place in education. But what is happening in classrooms right now is not balanced, transparent, or developmentally appropriate.

The Beaverton Safe Tech Coalition is made up of parents, teachers, pediatricians, and community members advocating for healthier, more intentional learning environments where human connection, curiosity, creativity, and meaningful instruction come first.

Please consider signing and sharing our petition calling for safer, more balanced technology use in Beaverton schools: Make Beaverton School District Devices Safe for Students

We are approaching 1,000 signatures and plan to formally present this petition along with demands for meaningful change. If you would like to learn more about who we are and what we stand for, please visit our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/838737755865385

Please also reach out to your school board rep and send them an email. They can be easily found here: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/school-board/board-members

Our kids deserve better.
