Hoping to find Buddhist places/communities on a pilgrimage to Scotland

Mostly just places where I could practice as a guest, possibly stay for a few days in exchange for work or money (either is fine but I'm also very well set up to sleep and sit zazen in my car, so no-one should feel obliged to accommodate me).

Hope it's okay to post this here.

Planning a pilgrimage in Scotland and I'm wondering if any of you might have recommendations about Buddhist places to visit; ideally where I can practice also.

Holy Isle was an obvious choice but it appears they mostly house independently run courses of all kinds, rather than being a community open to visitors.

I'm still not completely set on the itinerary. Thought maybe I could start with visiting a Gurdwara in Glasgow?

I'm giving it three months. I will mostly be sleeping in my car, which is also set up for daily zazen.

Any ideas, thoughts, advice would be most welcome!

Where do you guys get your lightweight, backpacking tents from?

Honestly, I'm staggered, a little bit upset, and really confused.

I really want to buy a tent I can actually see. If I am to pay £200 - £600, it should be the bare minimum - but it doesn't seem possible!

Online? No way to check the tent.

Go Outdoors? All nicely set up, but nothing suitable.

Outside? All high spec tents are on racks, nothing set up, the shop assistant will hum over the £500 tent you are interested in without actually being sure whether the inner and outer set up as one.

Alpkit? They actually have a photowall of all the tents they have packaged up. No help, no information, no option of seeing the actual tent.

Honestly, I don't know what to do. I need a one man, high performance tent for the Scottish Highlands in winter, in serious winds, and I'm mucking about with retail idiocy!

Any suggestions, good people of Reddit?

Swapped out Cotopaxi Allpa 35 for a The North Face duffel S 50L, and it's quite a bit lighter, but has similar dimensions

The North Face bag is only marginally bigger but much, much lighter and I can literally fit all my gear into it, because it's just one undivided space inside. Was half the price of the Allpa, which I will be returning. ( I think... :))

Anyone also opting for a duffel with backpack straps, or a similarly more minimalist opinion? I'd bought the Allpa because of a certain "one bag mindset" - and it is a beauty and a lot of fun - but it's actually terribly impractical and much too heavy for me.

Edit: I'm honestly wondering why this post is being downvoted. Can someone enlighten me?

Circling back after many years...

I mean, are we serious?

"Am I narcissist?"

Yes you are, you pitiful, trump supporting, hideous little cunt.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35 - just ridiculously heavy!

Bought it with great joy and high expectations; a sturdy bit of kit for sure! The idea was to pack for minimalist travel - a little bit of walking, but mainly travel; car, bus, train.

I packed for a week, truly just the essentials, and it isn't nearly even full at this point, yet it's already laughably heavy.

What to do?

Go extreme minimalist with gear, or let go of my sodding £230 😭 bag and pack my life into a super lightweight, roll top sailing dry bag?

A polite question

I think many of us gravitated here because over the years, r/zen proved to be a "captured" and rather combative sub. I am respectfully wondering if there's a - certainly less violent, but nevertheless significant - "takeover" here as well.

I don't think AI should be "ordained". I don't think genuine inquiry should be met with disdain and the suggestion that one is lacking understanding or virtue for simply asking questions.

It saddens me greatly that perhaps, in the name of openness, even this sub actually prevents people from exploring Zen without a sense of guilt or obligation.

I dearly hope I'm making sense here.

Egyszerűen muszáj tudnom; hogy áll a macifelső!

Éjjel-nappal viselitek? Csak otthon, klímával, mert nyilván akkor rohadthidegvan? Alszotok benne? Titokban hordjátok, hogy senki meg ne lássa?

Van macifelső-related imposztor szindrómátok?

Can you get gender care even if you don't want to transition?

Just feels like it's all or nothing at the moment. GP said "transitioning won't solve your problems", gender clinic (in their correspondence) assumed a full determination to transitioning.

I feel like a fraud, frankly; perhaps most especially because I'm older, yet I'm still at this super-confusing "entry level".

I really just need some basic help to start with, without major and life-altering assumptions.

Kind of don't want to be seen as desperate and miserable as this post will make me. Still...

Not transitioning, non-binary, not young.

Glasgow.

Any local places? People to talk to?

And NOT the mental health crap, please. The abuse I've been subjected to by NHS Highland is truly the "experience" I could have (should have!) gone without.

Could we think of barefoot shoes as a stepping stone towards barefooting? Are they actually suitable? I'm beginning to think it's really not the case!

I'm posting this piggybacking a couple of previous posts, most especially the one about barefoot shoes objectively not being suitable for people with an actual barefoot lifestyle.

I am now questioning whether barefoot shoes on the whole are the way forward to properly heal and reshape feet, restore gait, or they (mostly) are indeed just a commercially viable "middle ground" for a foot less disfigured, but still disfigured, nevertheless.

I've become quite angry, actually. As someone with post-covid balance issues I cannot fathom how it's considered normal to sell people toe-crushing, rigid, hoof-like exoskeletons and call it "high tech".

Such as Mediterranean, for example? Maybe Japanese/Okinawan?

I find OMAD super effective, but I do struggle with the community. Most posts here are about keto, or ultraprocessed crap.

Anyone actually eating food for OMAD instead of a chemistry set?

🤷‍♂️
