Alien betta in Florida ‘biotope’?

I currently have a 20 gallon Florida black water biotope tank with a small school of metallic shiners and a trio of American flag fish (one male, two females).

I’ve been thinking about getting an alien betta to go in there because with their dark coloring and spots of color, they’d look amazing in the black water (even though it would break the biotope). I have experience with betta communities but no experience with an alien betta (I would not attempt this kind of community with a betta splenden).

I don’t want to mess up the peacefulness of the tank because it is my favorite, so I wanted to see if anyone has any experience or opinions with this kind of mix? It’s heavily planted tank with lots of branches and sight line breaks. My main concern is the male flag fish who might become territorial, I don’t want him to beat up the betta who is a little smaller. I’ve also heard that aliens are more peaceful then their splenden counterparts because they’re mixed with wild type who are overall more social. I know this kind of thing can be trial and error so I do have a spare tank that I can set up for the betta if thing don’t go smoothly.

This is just a discussion though so I can see other people’s thoughts, so please don’t attack me for asking 😭 I don’t have the betta yet, it’s just a thought because I saw one for the first time in person the other day and he’d be beautiful in a black water set up.

I also plan on upgrading this tank to a 40 breeder! So if that changes the answer to this question lmk!

Strange harlequin rasbora?

I have 7 harlequin rasboras but one of them looks kinda odd, I thought he was just stressed when I got him but it’s been about a month and he still looks paler. Everyone else is a little pink with bigger triangles. Is he a different sub- category of rasbora or does he just look weird?

High nitrates!

I’ll admit I don’t consistently test my tanks unless I’m changing something or someone is acting weird, but I was having a different issue with one of my newer tanks so Ive sporadically been checking all the others

I’ve had this specific tank for months and it WAS fully cycled. However ive found out that it has concerningly high levels of nitrate the last two tests and I don’t know how? It’s very planted and has good filtration. I’ve also been doing regular 25% water changes weekly, except for recently where I’ve been doing up to 50%. I cleaned this one and it’s filter two days ago (and two days before that, minus the filter) and the nitrates are still sky high? I’ve done a retest to rule out error and it’s still like this.

Tank:
15g shallow
Heated at 78
Filter ✅
4 green aeneus corydoras
1 betta
Ph: 7.6
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: Between 80-160? 😬

The betta gets a couple pellets and the corys get a single wafer daily.

I did use to have five corys but one disappeared about two weeks ago, and trust me, I searched every nook and cranny in this tank for a body and it simply isn’t there, I picked up all the decor and rummaged through all the plants.

The weirdest part is that no one is acting like anything’s wrong? Whenever I’ve had a problem with a tank before the fish acted lethargic or odd which ticked me off to the problem but these guys aren’t acting like it effects them at all?

Pigeon advice?

I have two things that I’m really hoping for advice on!

First:
I’ve been considering turning my closet into a pigeon room, it’s a walk in closet and much bigger than their cage. I’ve taken off the closet door and plan to make one using chicken wire because there isn’t a vent in the closet (as well as putting their air purifier in there, and it will be secured so they can’t get to it.)

Does anyone have any tips or opinions on that? The ventilation is my biggest concern but if there isn’t a solid door blocking them off I think it should be okay?

Second:
If you’ve seen any of my previous posts, Im really struggling with my pigeon ownership. I’ve wanted pigeons for years and I finally was able to get my pair February 1st… and I still can’t even touch them unless I catch them, which I need to do whenever they come out to fly around my apartment because I can’t have them out 24/7. Which also makes me let them out less then I would like to because I know Im freaking them out ): they do have a large cage, that i custom made so they can fly even when inside of it, but I want them to have more then that.

There have been a couple times where they would eat out of their bowl if I held it outstretched in my hand but it’s very rare and they’ll usually just stare from afar until I set it down. They also spend all their time on their nest, minus one week a month when they give up on their eggs, and it makes me feel like I’ve imprisoned them 😭 especially because their previous owner had an outdoor aviary packed with a bunch of pigeons. (They lived there for the first 2-3 years of their lives, mostly unhandled.)

I’ve read all the advice pages about giving them time and offering them treats, which I do, but it doesn’t change anything. Will they ever let me just reach out and pet them? I want to teach them recall and tricks but it’s impossible. In all my research i did, everyone says their pigeons loved them and were quick to be handled and it’s disheartening to have the exact opposite experience 😭 I’d love for anyone who has also struggled to let me know that it’s not just me. I’ll admit I haven’t been interacting with them as much because I’ve lost the joy of it.

Also, one more thing, any advice on egg poops? It’s usually only once a day, but they’ll have nasty, sometimes liquidy poops that are a hassle to clean, I’ve heard probiotics help, any recommendations? They eat Desmoines no corn feed.

Self-nipping help!

A few months ago I picked up a sad little betta who had been at my store for awhile. He was originally in a five gallon but he was always swimming very erratically so he got moved into a ten.

Hes been fine up until this past week where he sliced his fin and then tore the sliced chunk off the next day. I was hoping it was a one off thing but this morning I saw that it’s not only that chunk, but his fins just appear tattered? They have always been a bit translucent and messy looking, he was kind of an ugly little guy when I got him and never got that classic ‘glow-up’ although he did significantly improve (just switched phones and the old pics didn’t transfer so I can’t show ): )

I believe he might be biting himself but I don’t know how to stop it?

When my halfmoon started nipping himself, he was also having trouble swimming so I moved him to a shallow tank. However this guy does not have trouble swimming at all and regularly uses all the vertical space in his tank so I’m not sure what would be best for him? Does anyone know how to chill him out a little? 😭 I can move him into a smaller tank that still has vertical space if that would help? I know longfins are notorious for having fin issues and needing to have their tanks adjusted but he is sooo active and he likes to swim down and then spin around to swim back up so I don’t necessarily want to downsize him.

Ten gallon tank w/ heater set at 78
Tankmates: 6 ember tetras and a mystery snail.
Ph: 7.6
Ammonia, nitrite: 0
Nitrate: under 20

A few days ago I found a lost pigeon outside of my job and was able to catch it to take it home. I already have a pair of bonded pigeons who are in a 4x4x3

The new one is in a large dog crate separate from them. I know they can be kept in small groups, but how would I go about introducing them? And is the cage big enough for all three? It’s a custom I made and I can make it bigger if necessary.

Currently still looking for the owner but if no one comes forward I’m probably going to be keeping it and I’m hoping they can cohabitate.

This might be a weird question, but can I feed my pigeon’s eggs to my cat?

Right now all I do is freeze them and then throw them out, but eggs can be beneficial to cats so I was wondering if I could just give it to them in their dinner so they don’t go to waste?

My girl is on the Des Moines pigeon diet (no corn) so the nutrients in her eggs should be pretty healthy?
