Hi everyone, I've had a wonderful rock pigeon as a pet before and recently I've been looking into getting another bird. How different are ringneck doves from rock pigeons? My boy in particular was very cuddly and affectionate, is this generally different in ringneck doves? Are they louder? Thanks.
I got a pair of pigeons 2 days ago, but they are afraid of me. Whenever i get them food or water, they try to hide from me. How to make them my friend so atleast they are not afraid and come outside of the cage and explore the rooftop.
I just noticed this strange skin tag looking thing on my pigeons lower back while he was grooming himself. Im fairly new to owning pigeons (have plenty of experience with other birds though) and am a little freaked out and worried. It feels like a skin tag and it doesn’t seem like it’s hurting him at all and he didn’t mind me touching it. Is this something I should be concerned about?
A bit of background on myself before I go in to this. Ive been rescuing mostly doves for about 8ish years. Katir is the first pigeon I have 1. Ever raised from a fledgling, and 2. Not rescued as he was a gift from another rescuer.
Katir is definitely the strangest bird I have ever had the pleasure of caring for, he's just about reached the 8 month mark and it shows. He's a very affectionate little man however hands have usually always been the bane of his existence even as he observes me bonding with other members of the flock that enjoy being squished for lack of a better term. But in the past day or so, he's started greeting me in the mornings by doing this to my entire hand until he's happy, then moves on with his life or sifts through my hair. Maybe this is a normal pigeon thing ive yet to see, or just one of his many odd quirks like his obsession with people who have curly hair and vendetta against my dogs tail.
I have a pet pigeon and got in somewhat of a argument with my friend about having a pigeon as a pet companion.
Explaining on how great and intelligent and loving they can be as pets as well as they are domesticated makes them a great pet if you are wanting a bird. My friend went onto say that they are more so like chickens and were bread more so for food and not to be companions or pets to humans. More so for their usefulness and he doesn’t see the benefit in having a pigeon over a parrot.
Thus leading to my question, were pigeons domesticated to be pets/with humans or purely (mainly) as food and mail?
I think pigeons are an amazing animal and can do amazing as pets/in homes
New to us don’t seem to happy. How long does it take them to acclimate to a new environment?
I just acquired this beautiful suspected female roller pigeon that I’ve name Cookie! I have her in an XL dog crate with a dog bed and her bare essentials (food, grit, and water). I know she should definitely have more enrichment than just a dog bed and nesting materials. Is there a link to an Amazon list that works for medium pigeons? Any help in the right direction would help :)
I got these bird band pliers (same as picture) from american bird band & a band for my pigeon, but I'm very scared I might close it too tight. 8mm is slightly loose but I'm afraid I might accidentally do something wrong.
How should I go about this? (tips appreciated, or experiences with banding)
I'm not very strong so I'm afraid it'll be like really hard to close but then all the sudden it'll be too easy to close and I accdientally shut it too tight. <- my biggest fear in this situation
They grow up too fast, the baby wisps are gone and now I have this pretty little sky puppy with all the color. They were in a good mood so we had some out of containment time in the bathroom to start rebuilding trust after moving apartments. They're trying so hard to still trust me, but also fighting some MAJOR cooberty urges to fight the heck out of my hands. I've learned that they like to really rough up my sleeve but will still be gentle with my hands if I say "ouch" when I get a good pinch. I'm still so torn trying to gender them, they've been extra clingy to their nest box and super defensive of that area but its too early to tell if its a broody behavior or if they're just establishing their territory. Either way I love them so much 💜
I've had my pigeon William for about two months now, I got him off the street in Toronto when he was just a young squeaker, he keeps making this odd popping noise but only at night, its not very loud but its like smack ur lips and expel air at the same time, I dunt know its hard to explain
My boy is sitting on the real eggs, with the nest he made for Boogie (not pictured). He ignores the fake eggs, but doesn't always properly sit on the real ones. I'm not sure he knows what to do exactly but he's only about a year old. So I can't fault him. He is a big loveable dumb dumb. ❤️
Thanks so much to a wonderful mod, now we have a flair! Everybody can make posts with the flair COOsday to post videos of their pigeons cooing on Tuesday 🥰🥰
COO COOOOO 💕💕💕
He went and got all cozy on his shelf and I guess I can't clean until nap time is over
I always advocate for pigeons finding new interests but this? Im worried about the future if this is who’s running our computers 😆
