So I've been dealing with this for around 5 months now and it's genuinely driving me insane.

Whenever me or anyone on my network is on a VoIP call (WhatsApp, Discord, WiFi calling) or watching a livestream, my internet just falls apart. Ping spikes, random disconnects, pages taking forever to load. The whole thing feels unstable.

The weird part is that when nobody is on a call or stream, everything is completely fine:

  • Normal browsing is fine
  • Downloads work fine
  • Even 4K YouTube videos play without any issues

BUT the moment someone starts a call or tunes into a livestream (YouTube/Twitch), the entire wireless network starts lagging for everyone on WiFi. High latency, buffering, slow pages, sometimes even full disconnections.

Here's where it gets interesting though:

  • All wired devices are completely unaffected during calls/streams
  • When I separate the bands, the 5GHz band is also unaffected — it's only the 2.4GHz band that suffers
  • Even when nobody is doing anything on 2.4GHz, I notice regular latency spikes where every ~5th ping is around 6x the average of the preceding ones
  • Bufferbloat tests show a C grade on wired and F grade on wireless
  • Normal ping to a server shows avg latency of 4ms on wired and 50ms on wireless — which already feels way too high for doing nothing

Thought it was my router since it was like 5 years old so I replaced it 3-4 months ago with an Archer C20. Problem still persists exactly the same. I'm on a local ISP and when I reached out to them they said there's no issue on their end since wired works fine.

Kinda stuck at this point. Is this 2.4GHz interference, bufferbloat, a problem with the Archer C20's wireless performance, or something else entirely? Would really appreciate if someone knowledgeable could help me figure this out 🙏

I used AI to help rewrite it so it's easier to understand :)
