Would this be considered continuous duty?

I picked this up at a resale shop because I’m looking to make a homemade rock tumbler. Barber Coleman from the 60s it looks like. Do you think this would work? Would you trust it but to start a fire in my house lol? Don’t know a thing about motors but am learning little by little.

What is this?

Found in landscaping rock bed. The first few pics are after I put in in my tumbler for a few hours to clean it up a bit.

Would you tumble this little guy? If so, how?

I was thinking of putting it in my smallest tumbler, a Thumler 2lb by itself or with some softer rocks, but mostly small ceramic media filled 4/5ths and starting on stage 2 for a couple days.

Checked my barrel after 4 days in stage one. No grit.

I filled 2/3rds, water up to bottom edge of top layer. 3 tbsp. Of 60/90 grit from the rock shed. Leegol 3lb tumbler. This has been common. I’ve been pulling it off and replacing fruit now after 4 or 5 days. Do you think it’s because the Leegol runs fast? I have been doing mostly chert and jasper.

Does anybody know what the specific grit sizes of the Thumler brand grit is? Website not helpful.

I use Rock Shed grit but came across a good deal and couldn’t pass it up. Wondering what the polish is.

Central WI in an old iron mine

Hardness around 6.5 to 7 as far as I can tell. Will slightly scratch with quartz if I press very hard. Would love to tumble this but don’t want to lose the top layers of black.

Ok, I guess now I really have to get a Rebel 17.

Pictured wet. It pays to keep your eyes open on construction sites. Jasper is my best guess but I’m a complete novice at rock ID.

Should I tumble this?

Pictured wet. Found this today on a job site. I’m assuming it’s Quartz mixed with something. Maybe iron? It’s on the edge if being too big to tumble. Thought about breaking it but thought against it. Would it be better to wait until I get a tile saw and cut it to see how it looks inside? And then cut it into smaller pieces? I don’t know. Maybe I’ll do a coupe weeks of stage 1 and decide later.

Some questions

If there is some importance to separating rocks according to hardness, why is ceramic media ok for tumbling with softer rocks? Ceramic media is at a 7 at least. Is it because there are no sharper edges? If that’s the case, wouldn’t it be ok in stages 2-4 to mix rocks of different hardness, as long as your tumbler is filled properly and not too empty? Assuming you did stage 1 properly and there are no jagged edges.

Wouldn’t it make sense to fill your tumbler up to more than 3/4 full in stages 2-4 since they are getting sanded more than shaped, and you need to lessen the chance of them bruising?

What happens if these tiny crystallized areas are tumbled?

I guess I’m assuming they are rubbed off. I’ve seen posts that recommend hot gluing to protect.

Break in time?

Bought a pair of Java waxed flesh cap toe boots slightly used from somebody. Awesome boots and they are the right fit. These things are stiff! I’ve broken in new boots before. 2 pairs of Iron Rangers, Alden Indy’s, some Thorogoods work boots I thought would never break in, Viberg service boots(long break in period) ect. And I’ve seen them all through and they are all super comfortable now.

But these Truman’s are an absolute beast to break in. I’m not sure how many times I’ve worn them or how many hours, I haven’t been keeping track. Probably all in all, about a month of wear. They just don’t seem to be giving an inch. The footbed still feels like concrete.

Yet I read so many post on here about how they are so comfortable and barely need breaking in. I don’t know, maybe this last just isn’t for me? They seem to fit well. Almost to the point of giving up. Thinking I’m going to wear them every day for the next three weeks and if that doesn’t do it I’m giving up.
