…I can’t think of much justification for a wool jacket without hand warmer pockets. Convince me otherwise?

It’s likely too big for me anyway, but it’s a personal question that has come up as I’ve been casually hunting for a wool jacket.

TL;DR - 1 year, 7 soaks/washes, 1 blowout at 7 months that was darned. Size 34x36, I am 6' 0" and 190 lbs.

Just hit about 1 year in my Brave Star ‘Samurai’ 18oz jeans in their Strongman cut. Size 34x36, I am 6’ 0”/182cm and 190 lbs/86 kg ]. I bought this cut because I have pretty large thighs thanks to genetics and 3x/week weightlifting.

This is my first pair of new raw denim, I’ve only had a pair of thrifted APCs that introduced me to raw and selvedge denim. No pre-soak, I just started wearing them daily. I had planned on waiting until 6 months of wear to wash them per Brave Star’s recommendation, but at 3 months-ish a full pint of beer was spilled on them so I hand washed/soaked them in the tub. 

After that, I washed them when they got stinky or felt/looked dirty for a total of maybe 7 times? I hand-washed them the first 3-4 times in the bathtub, then have machine washed them since then - all at lukewarm/cool temperature, no spin cycle and air dry. Any shrinkage I noticed in the waist felt like it always stretched back out. Despite skipping the spin cycle, my top load washer still gave a little bit of marbling. I don’t mind in this case, but a good reminder to avoid top loaders if you don’t want any risk of marbling. Apparently I need to pre-treat the seat and knee a little better lol, there’s still some dirt stains despite a recent wash.

I think this has been a good first pair! They got super comfortable, I can do full squats and lunges. In my original fit check post, I got some feedback that the cut wasn’t right for me based on the pulling at the front of the top block and that they look too tapered on me. At the time, I was happy enough with the fit and excited to start wearing them so I obviously kept them. Now, I tend to agree; I tried on some fuller cuts and I liked how they looked a lot better. Those cuts were Samurai 510, Sugar Cane Okinawa and Iron Heart 633; all in size 36, up from 34 in my Brave Stars. If I do size up to 36 I would almost certainly have to get the waist taken in, especially if I drop weight which has fluctuated between 180 and 190 lbs in the past year.

I started to get a blowout at about 7 months. I gave my first attempt at sashiko mending mainly just as practice, which slowed down the blowout but I decided to get them professionally darned at Self Edge. I’m still not sure if I’ll get them hemmed, but I think I’ll get a new pair in the fall and keep these for a whopping rotation of two pairs of jeans.

Le Laboureur - Largeot À Passants, linen/cotton blend

I found out about these because I was looking for a durable pair of work pants for the summer. I know the classic answer to that query is ‘fatigues,’ but I wanted to challenge myself to find something a little more unique.

“Métis” means “mixed” or “blended” in French, and in textiles refers to a cotton warp/linen weft. It should be noted that the people of The Métis Nation, whose homelands are in Canada, developed a unified national identity in the early 1800s. The textile was developed in France in the early 1900s. The Métis people have their own distinct and beautiful history of clothing, I can’t find anything linking the cultural heritage between the indigenous people and the European textile. 

Before métis (lowercase - the European textile) was used as a workwear fabric, it was a luxury tablecloth and bedsheet fabric, favored for its easy washing and ironing properties. The benefits to summer workwear are obvious: it is lighter weight and more breathable than moleskin, and it’s durable!

This specific pair contains a 65% cotton/35% linen blend at 290 g/m2 (8.56 oz/yd2). This iteration of the Largeot is À Passants (Belt Loops), which is a more modern mid-rise cut compared to the À Bretelles high-rise cinch-back version. I bought these from a shop called La Cognée in Québec, the closest source I could find to me in the US. I’m 6’ 0” and 185 lbs, I followed the shop’s size guide and ordered a size 44/82. I quickly received an email from Emmanuel at their shop asking me to confirm my measurements because French sizing differs from North American sizing. I decided not to take this as a passive jab at being a fat and stupid American (because he wouldn’t be wrong), and opted to size up to 46. I honestly think the 44 would have fit right below my belly button as intended, but the 46 fits comfortably after a 40C soak and wash and I didn’t feel like dealing with an exchange across the border. The soak shrunk the waist and length a little, but the waist has stretched back out a bit with wear. I might eventually get the waist taken in a smidge. Props to this little shop for taking the time to make sure I was getting the right size, I can tell they care!

My experience wearing these so far has been lovely. I feel a little bit like a millennial trying to fit in with current Gen Z wide cut trends, but that’s probably just my skinny jean history talking. In other words, this is a big step for me in embracing heritage inspired cuts. These are super easy to move around in and very comfortable in hot weather. The ruler pocket is cool, I haven’t found a great use of it yet.

Some options I was also considering were the Born at Sea La Pantalon Metis and the Mister Freedom McKarsten Trousers - Indigo Métis. The Born at Sea versions are heavier than I wanted. The Mister Freedoms honestly would have been perfect at a lighter weight with more linen in the blend, but I couldn’t stomach the price tag.

Freenote Cloth Riders Jacket Waxed Canvas Black. Seller is asking for $300, says it was rewaxed recently with Otter Wax.

This would be a local pickup, so I'd love your advice on what to look for. I'm not very experienced with waxed jackets, so I'm not really sure how to evaluate the condition.

From the photos, the most obvious sign of wear is that the black paint has worn off the buttons. Otherwise I would just look closely for tears through the canvas, fraying at the hems, and stitching issues.

How much would you pay? I see recently sold jackets on eBay are going for anywhere between $225 - $450.
