Hey all! Enjoying the No-Sew Mini Amigurumi pattern book by Genna Tatu so far, but I have one issue as a beginner. It does a great job of explaining everything except one bit: it tells me to fasten off parts without specifying how to fasten off. And a lot of times I'm fastening off a piece that I'll be crocheting into the body, etc., so it feels like this matters.

I know how to do the invisible fasten-off from Woobles tutorials, and I know how to do the slip stitch knot fasten off, and neither one feels like they work quite right. So, is there a 'standard' technique for fastening off in amigurumi which I should assume the author means for me to use (unless otherwise specified)?

Hey all! This is my fifth crochet project, a no sew mini amigurumi guinea pig from a pattern book by Genna Tatu. Used a 3.5 mm hook.

My question for y'all is advice about yarn. So far I've only used yarn which all came in a big basket of beginner crochet stuff put together for a charity auction. The yarn is all Sekafris cotton blend crochet yarn for beginners, medium weight, which has been super great to learn with. Easy to use, etc. The other yarn included in the basket was a "velvet" yarn that I have tried and found pretty much impossible. It's super soft, but I can't even begin to distinguish one stitch from another. I don't know how anyone does it at all; maybe one day I'll be able to hack it, but definitely not yet.

Question for you all: do you have any yarns to recommend which are somewhat softer and more likely to fill out small gaps better, and make nice little stuffed creatures... but not be quite so dramatically more difficult? I know it wouldn't be as easy to work with as this super beginner friendly stuff, but perhaps there's a degree of difficulty somewhere between this kind of yarn and "wait, there are stitches in this" yarn?

Hi helpful people! I'm working on my third ever project. I decided to attempt an axolotl off a beginner-friendly pattern that had good reviews on ravelry. I've struggled with this yarn. I've frogged it three times now.

I'm just concerned about these gaps between stitches, given that I'm going to stuff it. I have switched to a 4.0mm hook (started with a 5.0) and I'm really trying to focus on less tension, because in my first two projects I was definitely too tight.

Am I overthinking all this, and maybe the gaps are actually going to be fine? Is it the wrong size hook? Too little tension now? Is this kind of yarn just difficult, or won't work for this kind of project?

Any suggestions welcome. I'm so new at this I can't even tell what it is I should be asking, really.

Thank you to this community for being awesomely positive. Here is my second ever project, a Woobles Hello Kitty. Yes, I'm proud of it, in the sense that overall I think it's cute enough that I'm comfortable giving it to a kid who is a Hello Kitty fan, and I got through it much more easily than my first project. It's good for what I'd expect of myself, still being very new to all of this. But I'm definitely always interested in constructive feedback. A few questions:

1. I can see some obvious points where I messed up a stitch, etc. But more generally, when a veteran crocheter looks at this, what are the giveaways that this is a newbie project? What kinds of things do you see that I'm just not even aware of yet?

2. Stitch markers! Huge part of my life right now, lol. But the ones I have are all a very fiddly, annoying plastic, one of which actually just snapped on me. Are there higher quality ones, and are they in any way worth it?

3. Does a 'tension ring' do anything to help improve consistency in tension levels, or does it just make things more comfortable?

4. Is it helpful for learning purposes to do the same pattern twice in a row, or do you think it's more instructive just to keep trying new patterns, to learn new stitches, etc? So far I've got single, increase, slip stitch, invisible decrease, and double crochet (though the last one I still need a reference.)

Shared my first ever crochet project-- actually, my first crafty project of any kind, ever (since failing wood shop in junior high, at least)-- yesterday on the main crochet sub. Someone mentioned this group and suggested it might be appreciated here.

I always knew my first project would be full of mistakes (that's a given, I'm okay with it) and kind of... well, derpy. And derpy it is. For one thing, as someone gently noted, it's inside-out (the instructional videos really did make a point of explaining and emphasizing right side vs inside-out; I just struggle to see it yet. I'll learn.)

But the colors. The outfit. They're... really something. It's possible that, having frogged this creature completely once, and partially a few other times, I grew to feel 'some kinda way' about it. But I'll just say that I don't think this color scheme is especially common, in nature or anywhere else, and there may be reasons for that?

I've dubbed it Derpy Demon Cat. Some people seem to find it to be a friendly, vaguely charming demon, it seems. If you're one such person, thank you, but also: be careful. That's how they get you.

Well... it's done. My first ever crochet project, with gratitude and apologies to anyone who helped me over at the crochet help subreddit (and now possibly regrets doing so.)

To be clear, this was a Woobles beginner kit called a Purr-mutation, and the gimmick was that each would be unique. (This one is 03848.) I got the kit as part of a "learn to crochet" basket at a charity auction. I picked up the kit with no idea what it would look like as a finished design. Neat idea, I guess, but to paraphrase a certain fictional character... the scientists at their labs spent so much time figuring out if they could do this, they didn't stop to ask whether they should. Some combinations aren't meant to survive to project completion!

It was always going to look derpy and be riddled with mistakes; that's a given. The color combinations, though: that demonic strangeness was not my doing. I'm still kinda proud of it, despite also suspecting I should throw it into the fire... you know, just in case this is the start of a horror movie. Derpy Demon Cat will have his vengeance on its creators!!!

Hi y'all, this community was AMAZING in helping me once already (I didn't know about frogging...)

This first-ever project was going well after one full and one partial frogging, until... I failed to replace my stitch marker when starting round 16. The pattern for round 16 is single crochet, decrease stitch x 8. Can anyone tell and, even better, maybe draw onto my picture here which stitch was my first decrease stitch? Then I could know that the stitch to the right of that one was my first single stitch, and therefore, where I started. (I think?)

Worst comes to absolute worst, I could frog the whole damn thing, but I'd hate to now. These shades of pink (not chosen by me, just a beginners Woobles kit that was given to me) are starting to be a little much to look at...

Hey all! I'm brand new-- very, very new. I've taken one lesson total. I'm working on a Woobles kit and learning the hard way that stitching is one thing... keeping count is another.

Somewhere along the way the errors I've made now mean my count is off (I should have 28 v, instead I have 30... if I'm even counting correctly.)

This is not a project where I'm worried about the result, I'm just trying to learn and it'll turn out terrible, etc.

Question is: can I just pull all of this out, all the way back to the magic circle, and start over? Or will the yarn be messed up from this first attempt?
