Building Varstrom TSDZ2B conversion & it’s not working out - help neededz

I’ve got and fitted a mid drive kit to a Carerra 16” frame. It’s not working out and looking for advice.

The drive motor fouls the chain stay so requires spacers to resolve this. This pushes the front sprocket further out which creates a bad chain alignment- making it impossible to go into 1st gear without the chain slipping off. I don’t think there is a way to improve this… unless anyone has any ideas.

I was originally looking at the befang - but got lured towards to Varstrom because of the cadence assistance.

The chain stays have quite a flare on them- which I don’t think helps. If the motor did fit without the spacers, it would be an improvement, but the chain angle would still be poor.

Am I missing something?

Halfords 12v battery replacement

The 12v battery is 100% charged but SOH 50%… so probably due a change-soon. Ive used the local halfords for other cars where the battery needs coding. Would you trust halfords to do this? I’m assuming it’s just the same as someone taking a Volvo for the same treatment?

Is this poor design or non-compliant?

This setup was Installed June 2024 - in the EV CU there is also a main switch & SPD. The main CU is a split load board - with the EV CU fed direct from there.

Ohme saying it’s non-compliant and won’t install a replacement, warranted unit.

Edit - supply is TNS system

Unreliable charging recently

I’ve had over 1.5 years reliable charging. I have two EVs - one with APi, another without. Now charging reliability has turns to shit - for the car without API.

- it phantom charges. Over night - the session is setup. I confirm battery state of charge. Then in the morning. The cars % has not moved but charger display shows 90%

- sometimes it does initiate a charge. Car does not error, the app states session complete - but the Ohme display says error. There has been no attempt to charge.

The issues seem to have turn up since I’m now required to confirm state of battery charge - it’s been less reliable since then.

It’s connected to Octopus intelligent Go. All usual checks and reset done. No conflicting schedules in the car. Etc.

If I fudge the new system and say batter % is 5% and charge to 90% it’ll immediately start a charge using a smart charging slot - also works with MAX charge

Left to its own devices - the Ohme cannot be trusted at present. Waiting to see what Ohme say - but interested in others recent experiences

Charging problems

Ok - having some Zoe charging issues.

Here is the context:

- Ohme tethered charger
- 2018 ze40 Zoe
- 2 or 3 times recently charge interrupted with the circuit breaker & RCD tripping
- today Zoe will not charge….

However- we have another EV which
- this charges ok but did trip the breaker once

Until recently - for over 15 months- the breaker has never tripped.

So- the Zoe will not charge. This is what happens:
- Zoe gets plugged in.
- Ohme sets a schedule
- it usually attempts a short 5 second charge but this doesn’t happen
- i get a text from Renault team to say battery locked or car unplugged…

If I granny charge the Zoe, it works straightaway and charges fine

If I plug the Ohme in and instruct it to Max Charge - the ZE led indicator on the charge port flashes blue for around a minute, then charges to Red. The car doesn’t proceed past Ongoing Checks….

I don’t get an error - it just never really connects to Ohme.

I’d put the tripping down to a fault in the car - but found shorter charging sessions did not cause the trip. If this was an earth issue - could I expect the charging impossible error? Charger has been reset, car locked for 20mins.

And ideas would be welcome .

2018 Zoe - tripping breaker & RCD

On last three charges, the breaker & RCD has tripped. Car charges for maybe an hour, the trips to circuit.

I have another EV that charges fine. So I suspect this is the car.

What should I test or try and eliminate?

I’m using an Ohme pro 7Kw charger. The Zoe is a ZE40.
