Anyone else see the google maps update 2 or 3 years ago?

Cant remember if it was 23 or 24, but opened google maps satellite layer and they had the festival view! Wish they'd do it again.

Not sure if that was coincidental or just a great marketing aspect.

First kayak: sun dolphin journey - stability?

Last year towards the end of summer i picked up a good deal on a couple of sun dolphin journey 10 kayaks for my partner and myself. I managed to get out on the water once (a lake up in CO - Horsetooth) before winter came in. recently got a fishing license so wanna get out on it with a rod.

1 thing i found was that i had to put a bit of effort into keeping it stable. It's been years since ive been kayaking and dont have anything to compare to, is this kayak similar to most fishing kayaks and balance is something that will improve with more time on the water? Or are there more stable / better options for fishing kayaks? I can already see myself having a swim / loosing gear trying to net a 6" sunfish.

Battling with text quality / fine detail vs layer adhesion and general print quality (especially with ABS), and from all the tweaking i can't seem to get it better.

I have a standard elegoo neptune 3, and managed to get decent settings in Cura for consistent PLA prints. There is 1 specific model that has recessed text that starts on layer 1, and it was slightly less crisp than I would have liked. I also have ok'ish slicing settings for ABS, but the quality for finer text is much worse. I've been on a few hours of back and forth with AI to try get it tuned, but a lot of the advice seems to make things worse - the recessed text quality does get finer but i get serious print quality degradation - layers not sticking, nozzle head dragging, stringing along z-hops, etc. I have attached a pic with (top) PLA print that works and a sample of poor quality with 2 variants of settings (bottom) - the black print had better recessed text quality but i had to cancel the print after a few layers, and the white print has the low-resolution text that is not great (which is pretty close to what i get from my "base" settings below)

The first thing that i got from CoPilot was to make sure my E-step settings were correct. on a 100mm extrude, it was pulling 80mm, so e-step was pretty far off. I adjusted this by +20% of the previous value (using M92 command through octoprint terminal) to set it, and have the e-step working correctly now. This part did not degrade my printing at all, if anything it improved it.

The next suggestions is where the "artificial" in AI seems to show up a bit, with most of the suggestions not panning out - i tried to balance out not making too many changes at once vs loads of 1 step changes, so did slicing setting changes in batches of 2 or 3 at a time. But I am not sure if some of these settings directly relate to each other and doing 1 without the other might be causing it. These are the settings that i changed, with some degree of batching / partial "change and test" sort of approach (i'll refer to "base" as an ABS config set that kinda works ok with text quality + gives me a reliable print that doesn't fall apart, with a "->" to indicate the AI suggestions i tried that have not helped at all).

  • 0.2mm layer height / 0.25mm 1st layer -> 0.12mm / 0.2 1st layer
  • temps: 250 extruder / 110 bed -> 240 tool / 105 bed (also tried +5 deg on initial)
  • disabled "outer before inner" -> enabled
  • initial layer line width 125% -> 100% (or 105%)
  • print speeds: 25mm/s infill, walls @ 50% -> 20mm/s infill and walls half still. no change to initial layer speed @ 20mm for before and after.
  • z-hop retracted disabled -> enabled with 0.25mm height and 10mm/s speed

I am don't need supports for this (call me out if im mistaken on this) and have not touched the infill details (density / patterns, don't think this should be affecting it).

1 last thing, if i print with white ABS, the 250 deg tool temp does discolor it a bit, but i am sanding and painting the prints at the moment.

The cooler options did have slight impact of 1st layer adhesion, e.g. the dots in the middle of recessed 6 did not stick which is expected i guess, but probably also with the inital layer line width.

Any obvious suggestions that would help get better detail on recessed text from the initial layer for this? I posted a similar question on the 3d printing sub a couple of weeks ago, didn't get any responses
