Loser

I watched this movie again tonight for the first time since it was released. I'd say it's OK, but not great. It does involve a cute romance, but I'd say that just about the only characters in the movie who aren't losers are the two main ones, which is a pretty cynical message about our society! Nonetheless, I did enjoy the chemistry between them.

French Kiss

Who here has watched this one? I think it's a very good 90s rom-com. The chemistry between Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan is very good in this one, and it's also very action packed, plus it has a lot of the feeling of a French film. I highly recommend this one. My only complaint is that I think it dragged on a bit too long.

Eugenia Cheng

I just returned from MAA MathFest 2006, which was held in Boston this year. One of my best privileges while there was meeting Eugenia Cheng and buying one of her books, The Joy of Abstraction, which I got for a steal and was able to get her to sign for me. Although I was never really able to wrap my mind around category theory before, Eugenia has made it not only comprehensible for me, but also quite enjoyable and enlightening! I'm now about halfway through the book, which I'd say is excellent! I only learned about her about a year or two ago after watching a few of her YouTube videos, which are also quite excellent I might add! The main way I'd say she has made category theory interesting to me is finding quite useful applications, both involving other areas of math, such as abstract algebra, as well as some pertaining to society, which although a few people have told me were overhyped, I think are actually quite relevant and applicable, especially to what's going on today!

Innerspace

I watched this one tonight for about the 10th time, and I never get tired of it for some reason! I wouldn't say it's a great movie, but it's highly entertaining, especially for Disney, which apparently had moved into more adult themes by the 80s, including sex and violence, but I'd say these things made this movie a lot more entertaining than their earlier stuff, even though I'm not a big fan of violence, especially if that's the only point of the movie, which it clearly is not in this case! Although I'd say Innerspace is loosely based on Fantastic Voyage, I'd also say it's a lot better in many ways, since it's funnier and more action-packed.

The only thing I regret about Innerspace is that they never made a sequel, even though it was perfectly set up for what could have been a great one!

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

This is one of my all-time favorite films, which I've watched about 30 times since it was released and I just watched again tonight. Since this movie is very well known, I won't even bother going through any of the plot, but it's excellent IMO.

Here are a few trivia questions for you guys who are familiar with it.

  • What's the only possible year the movie could have taken place, assuming it's no later than when it was released?
  • An advertisement for what product (most likely subliminal) appears along the alley just outside Charlie's mom's laundry?
  • What is the geometric shape of the everlasting gobstoppers?
