help me choose!!

hey all, i am a rising senior at my university and about to start my undergraduate thesis. to celebrate being accepted into the program and for almost being done with school, i wanted to get a new bag that i could use for school and for my future workplace.

i’ve been eyeing the new folded bag by olend, because i love how androgynous its shape is and i love how it can be worn as a backpack, a shoulder bag, and a crossbody bag. there are two large pockets that can fit a 14" laptop and open space in the middle for something like a lightweight jacket or cardigan. it’s vegan leather though, so i’m not sure how well it will hold up over time. i want this bag to last me a while. i’m also not sure about the thinness of the straps… i appreciate the versatility, but i wonder if it’s so thin that it would be uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.

the other bag i’ve been considering is something from george gina and lucy. i like the bonny tink bag that is pictured, but my heart isn’t sold on that specific one. i love the silver hardware and from what i can tell, their bags are very durable. but i’ve seen them listed as “y2k” and idk if they’re just coming back because they’re trendy or if they’re just unique. i don’t necessarily want to chase trends, even though this brand has been around for a while. also, the straps aren’t nearly as versatile, buuut i think i may be able to replace it for a longer one if i ever wanted a crossbody and i know they sell other crossbody bags as well.

thoughts?? if anyone has owned a bag from either one of these bags, i’d love to hear about your pros and cons for each

Conflicted as an early career journalist

I’m an early career journalist and an intern at a local paper. For context, I live in a super rural part of my state where Christianity is not just a religious practice — it’s a cultural one.

I was shadowing a reporter at my job and went to a county budget committee meeting. There was nothing too special about it, but the county mayor asked for prayer before the committee got started and it felt like an awkward Thanksgiving dinner all over again. I am not a Christian, but given where I’m from, I’ve gotten really used to things like this happening.

It was a little jarring because there wasn’t any separation between Church and state government (even if it was just local government), and a few of my non-journalist friends mentioned contacting my state’s branch of the ACLU over it. The reporter I was shadowing didn’t really say anything about it, but when she told me that she first began attending these meetings she had a similar reaction.

I’m not really sure if I actually should contact the ACLU — I’m not sure of what would come of it and I don’t want to put a target on myself as a young journalist. I don’t even know if I should contact them *because* I’m a journalist.

Have any reporters here been in a similar situation? Is this just a nothingburger and something I should leave alone or should I seriously consider contacting the ACLU?

Source Request: Trans Pride in JC

Hello JC subreddit,

My name is Lauren and I am a new summer intern for the JC Press!

For Pride Month, I’m looking to write a feature story about trans pride/resistance. I’d love to talk to trans and nonbinary people from the area about their experiences and how they find community here. I want to know how Tennessee legislators have affected you, but how you’re celebrating your identity regardless (or if you chose to stealth instead).

I am supportive of the trans community and have written about similar issues before. My portfolio: https://laurenbarton.carrd.co/

Unfortunately, the JCP will not offer anonymity to sources, but I hope that will not discourage you from reaching out if you are interested. Please DM me here or email me at lbarton@sixriversmedia.com for further info.
