Justin Jones: The Assault On Multiracial Democracy in the South

Tennessee is on the front lines of the racialized politics that has resurfaced in the South since SCOTUS gutted the Voting Rights Act. Its Jim Crow legislature stripped the people of Memphis of congressional representation for their majority-black city, and Democratic legislators have been punished for protesting the move. The state is looking less like a democracy by the day. Meanwhile, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Louisiana are also working on dismantling black political power in their states.

Plus, Trump is an anti-farmer president, Stephen Miller is still running an immigration crackdown, and Tim sees promising signs in Tom Massie’s loss in Kentucky.

Tennessee's Rep. Justin Jones joins Tim Miller on today's Bulwark Podcast.

Tennessee’s newest State Park is on top of one of the world’s largest cave systems

The dedication will protect the massive cave system and the remains of a 1,000-year-old Native American earthen monument.

I'm running as a Democratic candidate for the US House with the goal of representing Tennessee's 6th congressional district AMA

Hi Reddit,

My name is Mike Croley and I’m running as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House to represent Tennessee’s 6th Congressional District.

I’m a Navy veteran, former Tennessee State Park Ranger, former federal employee, mindfulness instructor, conservationist, and dad. I’ve worked in public safety, environmental conservation, energy efficiency, and disaster resilience. I’m running because I got tired of watching working people get ignored while billionaires and corporations buy influence.

I’m running a grassroots campaign with no corporate PAC money. Just regular people volunteering their time, donating what they can, and trying to prove that you do not have to sell your soul to run for Congress.

My platform focuses heavily on:

Affordable healthcare

Public education

Veterans issues

Environmental conservation

Renewable energy

Government transparency

Worker protections and unions

Affordable housing

Mental health

Rural infrastructure and broadband access

I also recently found myself directly affected by Tennessee’s congressional redistricting changes, so I’ve had a front row seat to how political systems can shift in real time during an election cycle.

Ask me anything about:

Running for Congress

Tennessee politics

Campaigning as a Democrat in a deep red district

Veterans issues

Public lands and conservation

Federal service

Mindfulness and mental health

Grassroots organizing

Renewable energy

Rural America

Or whatever else you want to throw at me

I’ll answer as many questions as I can tonight.

Edit: I'll be on until at least 10pm CST. Please ask away.

I photographed this about 27 years ago. Does anyone recognize where this is? I can’t remember.
