Working on a proof of concept project

So I got to thinking about oiling blades after use or for storage. Saw the advice of mineral oil and TP/PT to wipe the blade. Could be slightly messy, dealing with oil, etc.

My first thought was this. A small silicon container that I bought in a multi-pack. I used for traveling with aftershave lotions.

An old tee shirt sleeve, wound in a coil, soaked in mineral spirits (food grade). I just squeeze the container, the cloth pops up, swipe the blade (rub on tang or dip the tail). Easy, though I do have a needle dropper for the pivot.

Thoughts? Improvements?

I did good!

I believe I did well Guys! Got this in today. I've bought several lately, think I gave $35-40?. Quick search claims probably 1875/85. Barber notch, no etchings (looked under a x10 loupe), near wedge and stamps.

Suggested this might be a 1940/60s 'barbershop repair'. But there's absolutely no way of knowing that.

Blade is free swinging on the pivot. No big deal.

Give me a week or so and I'll follow up with a cleaning, honing and shave update. I'm excited to see what this blade design does.

Eta: the blade is 3/4"

Restoring opinions

Couple of questions:

  1. Where do you guys get your pinning/rivet supplies?

  2. How does replacing scales effect the value of a razor? I get original hardware. But if they can't be reused or are broken/cracked, how does custom hybrids (stabilized wood & resins), resins or exotic hards effect pricing?

Awesome Mail Call!

Edit: Link fixed?

Got these three in today. So exiced! I'll give some info on each. First search, haven't tripled check. Also, yea, that's my SOTD. I was playing with Imgur links. Apologies.

Top: Columbia Cutlery, Extra Hollow Ground, Worcester, Mass. The company is known to have been producing 'c.1905'. Everything else is lost. However, the Circle/Bar stamp probably denotes the steel stock batch or final inspection mark. Neat.

Middle: Novelty Cutlery Co, Canton, OH. They became famous for patenting clear scales (process/formula?). Pictures/scenes would be set beneath the scales. I saw some Googling, they were amazing artistic epieces!

Bottom: I'm pleased with this one especially. Mid-20s Genco HEAVY, with scale accents. During this time, they puts out more razors a day than any other factory globally! And since there were sanctions and, you know, WW1 going on, Genco stepped up production. This model seems to have been designed for high end barbers. The accents were utilitarian as well. Protecting the thin bits and edges as barbers picked up and put down all day. Cool!

Selling razors

For you guys that sell spill over from your collections, downsizing, razors not to your liking, etc?

I've gotten a couple of razors that I picked up in 'lots' that I'm not partial to keeping. They're sanitized, cleaned, polished, honed and oiled.

What platforms have you used to sell and which were better/easier (fees, user traffic, etc)?

Picked up yesterday!

I found this the other day on the webs and picked it up today, $25! Did a little reading before purchasing, ofc. Deeper dig just now. I'll copy/paste few things that were cool to me.

'Early mid-Victorian directories place the hairdressing firm on separate streets (such as Carter Gate or St. Ann's Well Road in older local listings)

The move to the prominent 17 King Street location happened during the late-Victorian commercial expansion of downtown Nottingham.

Historical trade directories for Nottinghamshire explicitly list Arthur Doughty and his partner trading as "Doughty & Daubrah, hairdressers" at 17 King Street, Nottingham

Doughty & Daubrah was a historic hairdressing and barber partnership located at 17 King Street

Elongated Tail (1860s–1900+)

Celluloid & Plastics (1870s–1920s)

Full Hollow Ground (1880s–1920s)

No Country Named: If it only says "Doughty & Daubrah, 17 King St" or includes a model name like "Grosvenor", it was manufactured before 1891

Since the blade is hollow ground, the razor can be dated even more precisely to between 1885 and 1891.'

I'm monetarily terrified of how much I'm loving this hobby. Guess I'll stay single for a while longer...

Scale cleaning

Is there a way (or a couple) to bring some shine back to old scales? I understand some have just reached that point. Or some were never meant to be shiny, I assume?

SiC powder

Hey Guys, just got this on today. For reference, I've got a new Ark Trans and a new to me Belgium combo stone. Also, the suckers and hand written Thank You on the invoice was a nice touch.

Making sure I'm on the right path. After some reading I thought these were what I needed to keep the stones nice and flat. Also, 2 too many Old Fashions one evening lol.

I know I need a surface to lap the stones on. Seen counter top or headstone drops, ect.

Would ya'll point me to a decent vid (haven't seen what I'm looking for) or walk through the steps one last time before I potentially disfigure my stones?

The debate about David?

I'm sorry if this has been asked to death. But couldn't find what I was looking for in the history.

In the debate about David creating xeno and them existing before David...

Has it not been questioned about the goo the Jockies used to accomplish X, which was their specifically perfect DNA, Xenos were a definite possibility or expected outcome? Anywhere? Right?

And David tinkering around with it just created our version of them?

Watching a YT and dude is discussing the '17 different types' seen in the movies. Oh, and I took my grn meds. And the power's out.

Eta: he's adding/covering huggers, trog, ect. Not just the big guys/gals

Cas and his knowledge

I'm sure it's been discussed before, but I couldn't find the right combinations of words in the sub history.

Leading hypothesis' on why Cas is SO bad at general societal or pop culture and all the other angels aren't?

Restoration and price of

I've really enjoy cleaning/resorio antique straight razors! I understand most won't be showroom quality again. But taking them down and building them back up for another +50/100yrs is fulfilling.

I understand different manufacturers, different levels of pitting, some like petina, only worth what someone will pay, etc. But all things being equal. +$20-30 more?

I'm not really worried about hours or material. I enjoy it, it makes me happy.

Question is: get a good, respectable razor for $25-50 how much more would it be worth to you cleaned/polished/buffed and honed? I know it's a small market, but have you seen a trend in price comparison?

I just want to keep myself from acquiring 40 razors with no new home for them to go. I've owned retail side businesses before. I understand inventory, R&D/S&D, etc.

Is it possible

Still learning straight razors.

I mapped my beard/hair pattern long ago. Above the jaw, straight down. There's about a 3in/w strip starting under my chin and down as well.

Now from the edges of that 3in strip under my jaw, so proper neck, hair grows back towards my ear lobe.

Getting a BBS (atg) shave with my DE's is easy now. But I can't find the angle to run from the corner of my jaw (under ear lobe) to under my chin? My neck doesn't seem to be long enough lol.

Is there an angle I'm not seeing?

Fine detailing?

Hey Guys, I've gotten two inherited blades. Bought two to practice. I've got a great finish on one. And a nice honed shave off the other. Then I swapped, refining techniques.

So, this razor was one of two I got from my Uncle by marriage (had to have been his father's?). Story, keeping it short...

I've got a nice shine on the opposite side. But how in the hell would you puff and polish around the leafing?

I've been rehabilitating with low speed dremel, blade taped, feeling for heat, etc. Depending on petina, start red/why/green. And/or various diamond pastes. And I have the pointy dremel cones. Just wanted to check in before I dive down.

Eta: Sorry, bad lighting. I was able to get the heights around the leaf. But those narrower channels...?

Had an idea

So, stropped and went to whip up a little fruit, and stopped. I remember some of ya'll talking about soft/hard/distilled water.

So I have to fill my CPAP with distilled water. Because of the Damned hard water in the SE US. So a while back I bought a counter top Water distiller (seriously, just water). Convenient. But the included container is inconvenient to pour small amounts from.

Part two: The other evening I was cooking up a simple syrup for my Old Fashions. New, experimental recipe. And opened a x3 pack of condiment bottles. See...

This morning decided to strop out the old Keen Kutter. 'Wait, let me try the water trick. But shit, it's aggravating. What can I put it in?'

Condiment Bottle! Squirt as much as I need! BooYaaah, SON!

Lapping

I looked through the history and didn't see much of what I need. I just got in a used Belgian wht/blue natural vein and an Ark Trans.

I saw folks talking about sic (had to Google that). And then marble, plates, diamonds, w/d paper, etc. But was mostly for other stones.

Please explain, in some detail (still perfecting my X pattern level knowledge), how to keep them flat?

Antique 7/8s?

Still learning my techniques. Been using a Keen Kutter 5/8. Think I've done well.

Back up a bit, I had gotten a Gold Dollar (inexpressive) to experiment on. Honing now, scales later.

Anyhow, I got it sharp and tried it out. I like it! It's got more heft (feels more secure). I'd like to try an antique. So what are some moderately priced makers to look for?

New read just came in.

I've read only one novel in the franchise, *Isolation*. It was OK. A bit elementary. And I swear, Amanda had to the the luckiest person in the known galaxy. Bc every other paragraph lauded how she luckily did X, luckily Y was in the locker, luckily she knew now to Z....

But based on ya'lls posts/replies I got *Phalanx* in the other day. Only about 50pgs in and I'm enjoying it.

It's definitely different so far from anything I would have thought. Almost medieval, interesting! And I've got SOOO many questions lol.

Thanks for the recommendation so far!
