Got to watch this baby get his/her wings!

TLDR we found a fledgling American Crow that was spotted by cats after dark. Put him in a nearby tree. He grew up and learned to fly after 12 days.

The crows have recently accepted me (and my cashews) so I hope this story is okay to share.

I thought some photos of a healthy, awkward fledgling might be helpful for people to see when they, like me, might discover a fledgling on their doorstep at 10pm and are wonder if they're okay, and posts from this sub come up on their search.

They might not have all their feathers opened up yet, they might not always stand up straight and might droop their wings a bit or even hold one wing slightly lower than the other. They might seem to 'melt' into a branch in the summer heat, and close their eyes to rest. They look a bit fluffy and disheveled.

This fledgling had thought our front step was a great hiding spot to sleep for the night. We watched from a distance until it was fully dark (this was on the solstice so we waited until about 11pm) but we had already chased our neighbors cat away 3 times. Unfortunately our yard gets a lot of cats wandering around. We gently put him in a carrier and made sure the cats weren't watching, then put 'baby bird' on a lower, hidden branch of the apple tree in our back yard. The parents often hang out on the power lines near the tree so we knew they would be able to find him, and we have a 6ft fence so cats generally stay out of our back yard. We reinforced some gaps in the fence to deter cats more. In the morning, we could hear him call for his parents and they found him.

He hopped down from the tree during the day and hopped around our yard a bit. We watched from a distance from our deck and bribed the parents with peanuts and cashews so we could walk in our yard when needed.

We left him alone, and gave the parents some unsalted nuts/trailmix as they were working very hard to keep their babies safe. They hate raisins. They love cashews. They accept peanuts.

There was another night during this where this baby needed help hiding at night. Just sleeping out in the open in our yard. We observed from a distance, waited till parents went to sleep and we knew he wasn't going to find a safer place himself, and put him back up in our tree. He climbed up higher on his own. We don't have any bushes so this was the best we could do. Shortly after we did this, I went inside and saw a new cat walking up the steps to my back deck. Thid was eerie, he would have walked right into where baby bird initially settled in the the night. I ran outside and chased the cat far away. Made sure birdy was still in the tree.

After that, he mostly just stayed in the tree. We were a bit worried because he didn't always seem to move much up there (and, we had put him there). It was getting close to the 2 week mark and everything I read said it takes them 1-2 weeks. It's a massive old apple tree, huge canopy, branches go low within 3 ft of the ground and up almost to the power lines. We couldn't always see him but could hear him flapping around up there, calling his parents, garbling while they fed him.

Yesterday, 12 days after he arrived at our doorstep, I looked up and saw a strangly fluffy crow standing on the power lines in our back yard near the tree. Heard his creaky baby voice and watched as he awkwardly got his balance and flew 3 yards away to a bigger tree, roosting with his parents. I'm so proud of that little guy.

Our tree/yard might not have been the perfect spot, but neither was our doorstep that faces a house with outdoor cats. It was close to where we found him, provided cover and safety from cats while he learned to fly. We did our best with minimal intervention and only moved him if he was in clear danger or being hunted by invasive predators. Cats shouldn't be outside. Baby crows have no survival skills and they didn't evolve needing to evade domestic cats. I think we did okay. Please don't yell at me. 🥺

Any non-sponsored review of the hair dye printer?

Im getting so many ads for Zuvi Colorbox and cant find any real information on it. Most videos it seems patchy, but they also aren't putting it on an even base.

It's essentially a printer for hair dye with red, yellow, blue, white and black dyes that look like ketchup and mustard bottles that it squirts into a bowl.

I searched and didnt find anything here on it, maybe there are other brands or maybe it's just... fake?

How is the color accuracy? What does it smell like? Does it bleed? How does it fade? Does it never come out? Does it paint your shower? Is it normal direct dye or Splat or Ketchup? Do pastels work with it (and last reasonably) or only dark/vibrant colors?

2026 premium awd cost in Canada?

I'm mostly looking at getting a used mach-e. But a dealership near me has an adriatic blue coming in and it's pretty.

2026 premium awd standard range, with glass roof package and technology package.

MSRP is $53,000. Dealer discounts put it at about $50,900 listed price.

We're getting these down under $50k and then getting the EVAP rebate... right?

If I can get it down closer to $45k plus tax/fees I can justify it, if not I'll just get a used white one I guess.

Also, are they actually charging for the charger cord, or will they likely throw it in for free to get a deal?

6'3"h x 10'w door?

I am trying to get a garage door installed on an attached Carport that's already enclosed on 3 sides. It is a 1950s house, floor to ceiling is 7ft. There's a deck above, and my houses roof extends above that, can't go taller.

We had a company come and tell us exactly what framing they need. For low headroom/double-track, biggest door we could do is 6'3" tall x 10' wide. It's framed in now and the guy had to do it twice already (door company told him the wrong size originally).

But now the company is saying that they can only get one design in the size they need (Steel-craft Thermocraft or Ranchcraft, I forget which), and they are actually going to order a 6'5" door and cut it themselves on site (?)

Originally, they recommended a 'flush'/flat door, because they didn't want to cut through the squares, and I actually much prefer that. Now they're telling me the opposite. I'm tired.

It seems like most door companies can make custom sizes, but it's a bit hard to tell which designs are available custom as a...customer. Am I crazy to want a flat door in this size? Any recommendations?

Magenta leasers - when is your lease up?

I want a molten magenta premium Mach-E and can't find one or afford it. Who leased one and when is your term done? Bonus points if you're in Canada.

This is really just so I can give up and settle on a cheaper used black or white one, but I'm going to be a little sad about it.

Siding/garage door for 1950s home

Our home has an attached Carport that is enclosed on 3 sides. We have just had framing done for a garage door and need to choose siding and door colour (we will be limited on garage door design due to weird sizing). *currently it is just plywood around the frame, it needs finishing and I have no idea what to do for that.

The house has bottle-dash stucco and tri-color brick veneer on the exterior.

Just need ideas for siding and door colour as we're ordering the door this week. Something that sort of goes with the house but isnt brick or stucco, we wont be able to match those anyway.

We have replaced the boards on the deck above and will also be painting them, might just match it with the siding colour?

Thinking of a contrasting garage door and painting front door to match, but idk, any ideas appreciated!

I have a badly cracked concrete retaining wall. It goes around the entire property but is only tall at one side. My lawn is on top of it. I want to replace a 100ft long section that is 4ft tall at its highest point and goes along the sidewalk and down my driveway.

I got a couple quotes but they want to do Allen blocks and dig into my lawn 5+ft. We're not doing that. There's a big cherry blossom tree I love that was planted 10ft from it. Surface roots get very close to the wall*.

I know some digging is needed. But what options require the least amount of backfill/excavation? And how far will need to be dug back? The end where the tree is is actually the shortest, only 1.5-2ft high, if that helps.

I was looking at gravity blocks, apparently they only need 1ft of backfill but not sure how far they actually need to dig if the bottom blocks are wider?

(*I know the tree might be part of the problem but the wall is 70 years old, no rebar/reinforcement/drainage, lots of ivy and bushes planted directly along the stupid wall, and we're in a seismic zone and in rain forest on Vancouver Island BC, and its a really pretty tree).
