Need help finding a multi-day solo hike in the US on Labor Day weekend

Hi all,

I hope it's okay to ask for trip advice in this subreddit. I already posted another one and it was deleted. Nevertheless, I already got three answers I will add as a comment below.

Here's my situation:

  • I'm on a work trip in the US and have the labor day weekend to do some hiking
  • Leaving Chicago Thursday night, need to be in LA Tuesday morning for work — so this is squeezed into Fri Sept 4 – Mon Sept 7
  • I have to fly regardless, so I'm flexible on where — doesn't have to be the LA area specifically, just somewhere I can fly into and then drive a couple hours to LA afterward. But looking into flights only LAx, SFO and LAS seem to have non stop connections Thursday night

What I'm looking for:

  • 3 nights, tent, solo hiker, relatively fit :)
  • Looking for ~15 miles/day on the two full days, ~10 miles on the first and last [as i might have to drive to/from e.g. LAX for 4-5 hours]
  • Want some elevation change — not just a flat stroll
  • Scenery is important to me: I want nice views — ocean or mountains, not just forest. We've got plenty of forest hiking in Europe already :)
  • Nothing crazy high-altitude, just good views
  • Given it's Labor Day weekend and this is last-minute, I need something where permits are still available or not required, and where campsites/dispersed camping are realistically open.

Maybe somewhere on the East side of the Sierra Nevada? Cottonwood Lakes... I checked recreation.gov and if i understand it correctly a lot of permits are still going to be released later this month.

Do you have any recommendations for a route that fits this?

Comments from previous post. I started looking into the recommendations but are still a bit lost as I don't know the Sierra at all.

>Fly into BIH (Bishop) or RNO (Reno) and rent a car. BIH has extremely limited service via United but will get you into the mix for Eastern Sierra hiking. RNO is perfect for Yosemite as it is about 2.5 hours from Tuolumne and has many more flights and cheaper rentals.

>Hike out of Tuolumne Meadows if you can get a permit for Rafferty Creek or Lyell Canyon. Head to Vogelsang and do a loop that includes Ireland Lake, Evelyn Lake, Vogelsang Pass, Bernice Lake and Emeric/Babcock/Boothe Lakes. The are also cross-country routes that go to Budd Creek (Echo Lake/Cathedral Creek) or Nelson Lake via Elizabeth. Fewer spots but easier to get permits. Going via Cathedral Lakes and over Clouds Rest might be interesting but hiking back from Tenaya to Tuolumne is no fun; there is a free limited Tuolumne hiker shuttle bus this summer that could bridge that gap.

>Or look at Kearsarge Pass (Independence) and a hike to and from Rae Lakes via Glen Pass. Consider a loop from Horseshoe Meadows (Lone Pine) over Cottonwood Pass to Miter Basin/Upper Soldier Lake to Mount Langley over New Army Pass to Cottonwood Lakes. Both of these have starts and ends at or near the same trailhead.

>If you can stretch a bit then the North Lake to South Lake loop of 56 miles is worth considering. The issue is the 22 miles between trailheads (park near North Lake, exit South Lake) but there are plenty of people to get a hitch from. Or go in Piute and come out Lamarck for a start and end at North Lake. This is trickier since you have to catch the use trail in upper Evolution Canyon.

>My suggestion is to go over Piute Pass first then down to the John Muir Trial, up into Kings Canyon NP over Muir Pass via Evolution and then finish via Dusy Basin over Bishop Pass. Great hike. Muir and Bishop Passes are around 12,000' elevation. Note that you could get permits for Piute Pass, Lamarck Col (some cross-country in the beautiful Darwin Canyon area) or Bishop Pass.

>Finally, I really like the Mineral King area near Visalia. That would mean flying into FAT (Fresno) and heading down to Sequoia NP. There are loops over Sawtooth Pass to Lost Canyon and back over Glacier but it has been years since I have been there.

>Enjoy. That time of year is often the sweet spot for backcountry travel here. It is pretty dry now and many creeks are low or running below normal levels.

>Driving from Tuolumne to LA will be about 5.5-6 hours while it is 4.5 hours from Bishop or 3.5 hours from Indy or Lone Pine.

>Cottonwoods pass and head out of kearsarage pass vise versa. Get down there and take the bus back to LA. More than one bus but if you stick your thumb out you might get a ride back to LA. If you don't do Whitney you could do this in 3 days (4 with) See how your body reacts to being at that elevation before you go up. Permits for 9/4 is available on 8/21. Permits leading up the most recent date is plentiful so it shouldn't be too competitive.

>Yeah Eastern Sierra would be a great choice especially with the LA connection. I haven't backpacked there enough, but so many options. Make a few routes and see which ones you can get a permit for. The quota limits are available online, you're bound to get something. Pine Creek/Granite Park/Italy Pass/Royce Lakes, Piute Pass to Humphreys Basin and beyond, McGee Creek out to the JMT...

Problems with YaoYao App

Hi all,

i really love the YaoYao App for juming rope. I bought the lifetime pro and gave it a 5star rating on the appstore. But recently i`m hacing some issues that make it almost unusable. Basically there 2 different issues:

My setup:

  • Apple watch 9
  • iPhone 17pro
  • Polar H10 Bluetooth connected to watch

Issue 1

This came up recently and is really making it unasable. The app keeps crashing all the time. Today i startet the wokrout 5 times (after that i gave up ;) ) and the watch app keeps crashing. After restarting i get the message that the app crashed and i have the options to save or disard.

https://preview.redd.it/f9vtjfkp5yeh1.png?width=1206&format=png&auto=webp&s=fbf56c29a27e0b2d010d1a78602b5e5088444191

I already tried restarting both watch and phone... no success.

Issue 1 and a half

Thias might be connect, or not. But i noticed that the watch app does not work when internet is not available. It always crashes after ~30 sec. Is that somethng you can reproduce? In the Issue 1 example i had good internet access. But nevertheless.. maybe its a connectivity issue?

Issue 2

This issue i had from time to time before, but got it working again after restarting both devices. But now it also happens all the time. Basically the connection between watch and iphone app is interrupted.

https://preview.redd.it/dmmrnlpa6yeh1.png?width=1206&format=png&auto=webp&s=e2cb525bd627bd1bce0896fb70a2ca1b9b58830e

E.g. i start a workout and it works fine, I see all data on the phone. I start jumpnig and the app switches back to the overview screen:

https://preview.redd.it/z0ysq7yb6yeh1.png?width=1206&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d128a4019b8007326f7fddfe819f7f396301d53

Whenever i raise th watch (not possible while jumping) the connection is resestabished. When i start again the watch is turning dark (as it always does and always did while using the app before) the connection is lost again.

The workout works fine on the watch but I really like the phone companion to see what im doing.

  • Did you have similar issues in the past?
  • Do you know if the developer is on reddit. I tried to email him about Issue 2 and 1 1/2 before but got now reply.

Thanks at all

Variable knot to attach pull-up bar to tree

Hi all,

this might be a strange question ;) I have a wooden pull-up bar (basically just a wood bar with holes) and would like to to a e.g. tree on the go. So it needs to be set-up quikly and ideally also adjusted easily.

May ideas was the following I have 2 ropes (left/right) and i would attach each rope to a carabiner and leave is like that al the time. This way it will be easier to throw the rope over a branch as well.

The other end is threaded though the holes in the wood bar and gets some kind of loop to attach to the carabiner. That way i can just hand it up and down quickly.

So far so easy ;) But know i need to adjust the position of the loop easly so i can adjust the length of the left and right side. Ideally quite easily to get the bar straight even after attaching it to see branch.

Is there any easy way to do this?

Thanks a lot!!!

Unraid: Cache pool drive showing errors — best way to migrate data and replace the drive?

HI all,

One of my cache pool devices (sde) is throwing errors, so I need to replace it. Or at least i think so 😉

If I see it correctly the sde is the parity drive of that pool. Correct?

so....

- I have a **cache pool** (with the failing sde) and a separate **data pool**

- The data pool was originally created just to hold my appdata folder and a few other things

https://preview.redd.it/nq5sys65xm7h1.jpg?width=1499&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ec137154bea9e01d938a866edadd8e0f67f744a

I would...

  1. Move all data from the data pool into the cache pool

  2. Once the data pool is empty, delete it

  3. Reassign the drives from the old data pool as needed

Question:

  1. Does that make sense? 😉

  2. How do I move over the data from the data pool? Do I just change the share's preferred location and start the mover afterwards?

  3. Once the data pool is empty, can I simply delete it in the Unraid UI and then reassign those drives — or is there more to it?

Thanks!

Hi all,

this might be a bit strange question 😉We (family with kids 8/10yo) have longer car rides from time to time. I would like to use the time to play some games and thought maybe RPGs are a good idea. But: None of us every played one (me included 😉).

--> Do you have a suggestion for a easy to get and understand RPG:
-- with ideally with premade characters, scenarios that guides us easily in the Genre
-- That can be played without a table [rolling dice is fine]
-- Guides me (as the moderator) in what I have to do
-- Has a kids friendly setting (some fighting is fine)
-- Ideally is print&play
-- Ideally is in German, but i could also translate on the fly

Thanks so much

Hi all,

just started rope jumping (more tan just casually), mostly a exercise for overall fitness. No tricks (yet ;)). I'm using 2 different ropes:

  • 1 Speedrope hat is quite light
  • 1 hereope with 1/4lb rope
  • [i have the 1/2lb but don't use it yet]

Video from side

Video from front

I manage to to ~200 basic jumps without skipping but not very often... still I'M happy ;) I noticed a couple of things i would like to get your opinion on:

  • I feel the rope touching my feet quite often, even if i don't trip... so it seems to be close
  • On the "front video" it looks like the rope is not rotated completely symmetrical. Not sure if its the gopro angle. But i also have the feeling the my right food brushes the opre more often than the left
  • Just general advice on form is very welcome ;)

Thanks so much
