Young Bear Sighting at Kings Canyon

Very bittersweet to see. Obviously very cute, but desensitization can and has led to euthanasia.

I tried yelling, screaming, and making noise to get it to leave the campsite. It didn’t react at all to me because, as informed by the park ranger, people are constantly feeding the bears and leaving ice chests out and accessible. The ranger also said the cubs have learned bad habits from adults in the area, who have been knocking over bear boxes and also have been fed.

Once a crowd of about 15 gathered to help, it began leaving, but stayed in the area. Someone had left their easy to open ice chest in their truck while away from camp. Myself and two other women (not the owners of the truck) got the heavy ice chest down and put it in the site’s *empty* bear box. The kicker is it that happened the day before, same group, same thing.

In case you are not aware, this is how bears get euthanized. They become desensitized to humans, get too close and eventually can and will harm someone. Even this baby lunged at us at one point.

They don’t deserve to die just because we have invaded their home. Do not feed the bears, and please actually use the provided bear boxes. Please help if you see one by actively trying to scare it away from a safe distance, yell, bang pots, throw pine cones and rocks in its direction, all as stated by the ranger. Also, a crowd is much more effective than just one person (which is sort of a given, but I was yelling alone for about 15 minutes wondering where any help was).

All I can hope is that this bear survives.

Anyone who has done Rae Lakes Loop this month, can you tell us how cold the weather got at night?

Trying to gauge if thermals and a lower R-value sleep pad and sleeping bag will work for my trip next week. I know if can drop below 40 degrees.

What to expect weather

Permit to start Rae Lakes clockwise on Thursday.

Planning 4 nights: 1) Mid/upper paradise valley, 2) Woods Creek, 3) Upper Rae Lake, 4) Junction Meadow

I’m definitely concerned about lightning, but not sure how to reasonably interpret the risk of the weather forecast.

The image is the forecast from NWS focused near the Rae Lakes.

Do these forecasts seem like normal it-is-what-it-is-yes-it-might-storm high sierra summer weather? Or are they high enough to give serious pause about going?

Mineral King loop options Late august 4 nights

Hi all! Doing a loop starting and ending at Timber Gap in late august and new to the zone. We have a group of 6-7 of us with a few fishing poles and want to maximize beautiful camp and hang spots after a long day on the trail. I am getting so many mixed signals on distances and beauty so looking for you all to help narrow it down for me!

Option 1:
Night 1 - Eagle Scout creek / Kaweah River

Night 2 - Hamilton Lake (I like the idea of camping and relaxing here it looks beautiful but open to thoughts)

Night 3 - Little or Big Five Lakes - (Anyone have a spot they recommend here?)

Night 4 - Upper Lost Canyon - (Or should I go to Monarch?)

Option 2:

Night 1 - Bearpaw Meadow

Night 2 - [Lower?] Nine Lake Basin - (Have heard good things but is it worth giving up a night at Hamilton?)

Night 3 - Little or Big Five Lakes - (Anyone have a spot they recommend here?)

Night 4 - Upper Lost Canyon - (Or should I go to Monarch?)

Lakes trail sequoia NP

The rangers told me about the sites on the “bluff” of pear lake so that’s where I pitched. No mosquitoes or ticks to report. No bears but a lot of marmots around. I do wish I had taken the hump and watch tower back instead of watch tower both ways. Definitely recommend pear lake over emerald if you can make it. The night sky was breathtaking. I’ve never seen the milkyway with my own eyes like that. Rangers were at pear lake when I arrived around 3 but left around 4pm. I think I’m the only person whose permits got checked.

People’s lack of basic consideration today really grossed me out

took some friends to Sequoia today and the behavior around General Sherman was honestly awful. saw multiple people carving into trees, big groups ducking under fences and stomping all over the roots even though the signs are right there, and cars parked where it clearly says not to, creating blind spots and blocking stuff off. other visitors were yelling at them to stop and they’d just ignore it like nothing was happening. I haven’t been to Sequoia in years and usually avoid the super touristy spots, so idk if this is just how it is now, but I left feeling really sad and embarrassed by how entitled and careless people were being.

Mineral King Loop 8/6-10

Went from the Mineral King TH to Timber Gap - Redwood Meadow - Hamilton/Precipice - Kaweah Gap - Little/Big 5 Lakes - Lost Canyon - Sawtooth Pass - MK. This was my first “real” backpacking trip in 2022 and I was joined by my daughter this time. We celebrated the completion of her first backpacking trip and my 61st birthday today. These trips get harder for me every year so I was really happy to be able to share this one with her.

Recommendations for 3 day backpacking trip

We want to go somewhere that has alpine lakes for fishing. Some friends recommended Jennie Lakes, but we would prefer to do something in the park. Would it be smart to just wing it and see if rangers can offer us permits the day of? Big Pine Lake looks awesome and I see that reservations for Big Pine Creek North Fork fill up fast. Any recommendations for specific trails? Thanks.

Lost pad!

Just wrapped up “the loop” CCW in 4 days/3 nights. Trail was in great shape. Haven’t done it CW, but CCW was just fine. Knocked out a ton of elevation gain with fresh legs by making it all the way to Vidette day 1. Little bit of rain the first day and a little bit of smoke in the valley the last day. Great weather otherwise. Saw rattle snakes, but no bears. It gets hot this time of year at the lower elevations. Prepare accordingly. Overall, it’s a physically challenging but manageable route.

JMT campsite near Vidette was packed. Wandered down the trail a ways to find some privacy. Middle Rae was also packed, but everyone was respectful. Lots of TP blossoms at Upper Paradise Valley - if you’re going to the trouble to spend time in the backcountry, prepare to pack out your shitty TP, it’s really not that inconvenient.

I think somene in our group left behind a Thermarest Neo X-Lite at Upper Paradise Valley - if you happen to see it and also see this post, please reach out! Will provide a small award for return.

Mineral King Road Construction

I have a trip planned in Mineral King at the end of September and reading about the road work being done. I’m a bit concerned with trying to time the drive to be there when they have the road open (10am, 1pm, & 4pm) - but obviously this is on us, but also wondering if the traffic has been bad because of the work? I know it’s a slow drive anyhow, but wondering how it’s been from anyone who’s done it recently?

Rae Lakes 2 days feasibility

Hi I got a permit for Rae Lakes CCW starting Saturday, but I can’t take vacation so I’d have to finish Sunday or before ~9am Monday.

What fitness level is required to finish Rae Lakes loop in 2 days?

I’ve done long runs (one backyard ultramarathon ~40 miles a year ago) and elevation (5 days High Sierra Trail last week) separately, but never together. Wondering if a goal of 2 days is bordering on trail running/fastpacking, or if it’ll be extremely long days of hiking?

edit: Thanks all. I think the comments are TLDR; it’s feasible but may not be enjoyable and may be too fast to fully enjoy everything on the loop, but it’s still better than not doing it. I will think about this…this would be my last chance this season, and there’s no guarantees I would have available vacation time to do this in the next years either.

PSA: Lodgepole Campground is infested with bears

TLDR: Many habituated bear sightings at lodgepole this past week. High chance bear will come through camp in middle of the night.

I was there last weekend. In the middle of the night, I thought I heard someone messing with their bear locker for about 30 minute minutes. It woke me up and I went to the bathroom. I looked in the direction of where I was hearing the sound and I saw nobody. As soon as I looked, the sound went away. I walked back to my campsite and as I scooted my butt into my tent, I saw the bear walk about 5 feet in front of me through my campsite. I told it to get and I threw a rock at its feet. It basically followed me once I looked its way with my headlamp.

Each night I heard stories the next day. I couple I went in a backpacking trip who was at 152, said both nights they had bears come through their campsite.

I told the ranger the next day he said there was another bear encounter on the other side the same night.

I was at 119.

For those who see this post negatively, it’s not that they are there. It’s more that these bears are habituated. Which is the wrong type of bears you want to see come into your campsite.

Woke up at 4am to squeeze both parks in a day

First time I tried to go I foolishly didn’t look at conditions and was met with a road closed sign. This time I thoroughly planned it and saw everything on my bucketlist!

Weather considerations in King's Canyon this time of year?

Hi! Headed to Sentinel Campground next weekend from Thursday to Sunday. Looks like it's pretty hot out there right now and want to make sure we're prepared as we're 10 people. Any activities you'd recommend or discourage given the weather? Currently thinking Zumwalt Meadow, Muir Rock and Mist Falls Hike. And any tips for staying cool in this heat?

Need help finding a multi-day solo hike in the US on Labor Day weekend

Hi all,

I hope it's okay to ask for trip advice in this subreddit. I already posted another one and it was deleted. Nevertheless, I already got three answers I will add as a comment below.

Here's my situation:

  • I'm on a work trip in the US and have the labor day weekend to do some hiking
  • Leaving Chicago Thursday night, need to be in LA Tuesday morning for work — so this is squeezed into Fri Sept 4 – Mon Sept 7
  • I have to fly regardless, so I'm flexible on where — doesn't have to be the LA area specifically, just somewhere I can fly into and then drive a couple hours to LA afterward. But looking into flights only LAx, SFO and LAS seem to have non stop connections Thursday night

What I'm looking for:

  • 3 nights, tent, solo hiker, relatively fit :)
  • Looking for ~15 miles/day on the two full days, ~10 miles on the first and last [as i might have to drive to/from e.g. LAX for 4-5 hours]
  • Want some elevation change — not just a flat stroll
  • Scenery is important to me: I want nice views — ocean or mountains, not just forest. We've got plenty of forest hiking in Europe already :)
  • Nothing crazy high-altitude, just good views
  • Given it's Labor Day weekend and this is last-minute, I need something where permits are still available or not required, and where campsites/dispersed camping are realistically open.

Maybe somewhere on the East side of the Sierra Nevada? Cottonwood Lakes... I checked recreation.gov and if i understand it correctly a lot of permits are still going to be released later this month.

Do you have any recommendations for a route that fits this?

Comments from previous post. I started looking into the recommendations but are still a bit lost as I don't know the Sierra at all.

By u/Fast-Weird7491

>Fly into BIH (Bishop) or RNO (Reno) and rent a car. BIH has extremely limited service via United but will get you into the mix for Eastern Sierra hiking. RNO is perfect for Yosemite as it is about 2.5 hours from Tuolumne and has many more flights and cheaper rentals.

>Hike out of Tuolumne Meadows if you can get a permit for Rafferty Creek or Lyell Canyon. Head to Vogelsang and do a loop that includes Ireland Lake, Evelyn Lake, Vogelsang Pass, Bernice Lake and Emeric/Babcock/Boothe Lakes. The are also cross-country routes that go to Budd Creek (Echo Lake/Cathedral Creek) or Nelson Lake via Elizabeth. Fewer spots but easier to get permits. Going via Cathedral Lakes and over Clouds Rest might be interesting but hiking back from Tenaya to Tuolumne is no fun; there is a free limited Tuolumne hiker shuttle bus this summer that could bridge that gap.

>Or look at Kearsarge Pass (Independence) and a hike to and from Rae Lakes via Glen Pass. Consider a loop from Horseshoe Meadows (Lone Pine) over Cottonwood Pass to Miter Basin/Upper Soldier Lake to Mount Langley over New Army Pass to Cottonwood Lakes. Both of these have starts and ends at or near the same trailhead.

>If you can stretch a bit then the North Lake to South Lake loop of 56 miles is worth considering. The issue is the 22 miles between trailheads (park near North Lake, exit South Lake) but there are plenty of people to get a hitch from. Or go in Piute and come out Lamarck for a start and end at North Lake. This is trickier since you have to catch the use trail in upper Evolution Canyon.

>My suggestion is to go over Piute Pass first then down to the John Muir Trial, up into Kings Canyon NP over Muir Pass via Evolution and then finish via Dusy Basin over Bishop Pass. Great hike. Muir and Bishop Passes are around 12,000' elevation. Note that you could get permits for Piute Pass, Lamarck Col (some cross-country in the beautiful Darwin Canyon area) or Bishop Pass.

>Finally, I really like the Mineral King area near Visalia. That would mean flying into FAT (Fresno) and heading down to Sequoia NP. There are loops over Sawtooth Pass to Lost Canyon and back over Glacier but it has been years since I have been there.

>Enjoy. That time of year is often the sweet spot for backcountry travel here. It is pretty dry now and many creeks are low or running below normal levels.

>Driving from Tuolumne to LA will be about 5.5-6 hours while it is 4.5 hours from Bishop or 3.5 hours from Indy or Lone Pine.

By u/cakes42

>Cottonwoods pass and head out of kearsarage pass vise versa. Get down there and take the bus back to LA. More than one bus but if you stick your thumb out you might get a ride back to LA. If you don't do Whitney you could do this in 3 days (4 with) See how your body reacts to being at that elevation before you go up. Permits for 9/4 is available on 8/21. Permits leading up the most recent date is plentiful so it shouldn't be too competitive.

By u/zh3nya

>Yeah Eastern Sierra would be a great choice especially with the LA connection. I haven't backpacked there enough, but so many options. Make a few routes and see which ones you can get a permit for. The quota limits are available online, you're bound to get something. Pine Creek/Granite Park/Italy Pass/Royce Lakes, Piute Pass to Humphreys Basin and beyond, McGee Creek out to the JMT...
