Rae Lakes Loop trip report and conditions

Rae Lakes Loop 5/17/2026-5/20/2026

Day 1: Started our trip at the roads end parking lot around 11 am. No permitted needed until may 28th, just self issued back country permits. From roads end, hiked north towards south forks kings river/ upper paradise valley. RIVER FORD: We forded the river around 5 pm. Roughly 75 yards down stream of the old bridge, there is a sand bank. From the west side of the river, there is a log that goes parallel with the river along the shore. From there, we did a diagonal cross , which put us roughly 20 feet above the sand bank, to an opening in the other bank. The current was swift, and thigh deep on us. I would recommend keeping shoes on ( we took our socks and shoe soles off), as the rocks are slick. Not the easiest ford, but doable. Many people ahead of us turned back. We then found a camp site along the river on the east side. Looking back, the river was slower the following morning at first light, and would have been easier to do then

Day 2: From our campsite on south forks kings river, we hiked east. Several rattle snakes in rocky sections. Lunch at woods creek bridge, and then turned south along John Muir trail. Camped at Lower Rae lake. Tough trekking at elevation. Started to see patches of snow starting at dollar lake, but easily avoidable.

Day 3: Awoke to a bitterly cold morning, and headed to glen pass. Some snow and ice patches. Started the ascend up the north side of the pass at 9:15 am, and reached the top at 11:30. The normal mapped switch backs were not there, as there is a straight shot of boot tracks up to the top. Thankfully that night was below freezing, so the ice/ snow was solid. Was able to use established paths easily, and did not posthole once. I would highly recommend micro spikes, although one in our group did most of it with none on. Once at the top, south side was a fine descent. Some patches of snow on the south side once it flattened out for the next 2 miles, and did post hole a few times, as it was afternoon and the snow was soft by then. Lunch at the trail crossing to Kersage pass near a little melt water pond. Descended and turned east along Bubbs creek trail, which after 2,000+ miles of backpacking at by far the most picturesque valley ever!! Camped at a campsite 3 miles west of east lake trail junction ( most beautiful campsite ever).

Day 4: Packed up and left camp at 6 am bound for the car. Easy 7.5 miles out to the car. Just in time to miss breakfast at grant’s grove that closed at 10 am!

Notes
-Far out is good, but incomplete for the non pct/jmt sections. Get the National Geographic map of kings canyon. Has a lot more campsites labeled.

-Fording the south fork kings river was challenging. If I was alone, not fit, or inexperienced I would have turned back too. If I was nervous about it, camp on the banks and wait for the morning so there’s less snow melt fueling the river speed.

-The second leg of the second day was challenging. The steady elevation gain to above 10,000 feet was difficult for those of us that live at sea level. Pace your self!

-The pass was challenging. Thabfulky there were a lot of holes made by others. Start early while it’s frozen, and bring micro spikes. I would prefer to do this pass going southbound, as this is very very steep.

-Doing the loop clockwise is highly preferable in my opinion. If the river ford is to high, you can turn back easily. You can also acclimate longer, and is steady climb to 10,000 feet. You also get to experience the most beautiful valley ever going downhill with a light pack. Lastly, you can set your self up for an easier time of the pass which the snow is hard. I see no advantages if going counter clockwise.

-Carried a bear can the whole way, just to camp with bear box at every campsite, and did not see one bear.

-Small dry stretch between bullfrog lake and south of the pass

TLDR
River ford: possible, mid thigh high. Cross below old bridge. Slower water in morning.

Glenn Pass: Start as early possible while the snow is hard. Bring micro spikes. No switchbacks, straight shot up.

May 16 & 17 | 2026

Just sharing some photos from my recent trip. It was awesome! I went to Kings Canyon on Sunday, May 17th and was shocked how few people I ran into on the trails. I saw General Grant around 6pm and it felt so intimate with just a few other people around. Lovely parks and Kings Canyon was definitely my favorite of the two.

Best Route from Three Rivers

Any tips for driving from Three Rivers up to Kings Canyon? We’ve already done the General's Highway in Sequoia, and I want to take a different path. I’ve heard mixed reviews about Dry Creek Road and CA-245.

One person gets a bit car sick, and we are in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. TIA.

EV family trip to Kings Canyon & Sequoia

Hi, I'm planning weekend family trip around SEKI with my Tesla MYLR.

I'm coming from the Los Angeles area and plan to charge as much as possible at a Supercharger near the park before heading out.

I'm planning to go to Boyden Cavern, stay one night at Wuksachi Lodge, visit famous spots in Sequoia Park (General Sherman Tree, Wood tunnel, Moro Rock, etc.), return to the same Supercharger to charge, and head home.

When I search for a route in the Tesla official app, I get battery level estimates like in the image, but I'm unsure how accurate they are in reality and I'm anxious.

Has anyone taken a similar route for a trip? Is this a feasible plan?

Any advice or comment are welcome! Thanks!

Lodgepole Campsites - 98 vs. 125?

Hello, family of five (kids 5,8,11) traveling to Lodgepole this summer. My husband and I each snagged a campsite and wondering which to release. Looking for most privacy and great access to the river.

98 looks like a great option and appears to have easy access to the river with no large drop offs. Looks like neighboring sites will be empty (97 is closed due to hazardous trees) and 99 isn’t even on the map/grid (no clue why).

125 seems to be a more private area in general (walk in site upper loop) with a waterfall (maybe?) view. Just not sure how hazardous it’d be to get to the water with kids.

Any one have firsthand experience with these campsites or general area?

Day trip from Yosemite?

To preface, I did read a ton of other posts about short trips. Many of them were a few years old or more, so just posting to see if there are any current tips based on what I've found!

My kids and I (34F, kids are 12, 8, 6) are spending 4 days in Yosemite. We recently went last September and hit some of the main points (though my oldest and I were both quite sick so missed a lot due to lack of energy). Because the Merced river is likely too high for rafting or swimming, I'm thinking of spending a day in Sequoia and/or Kings Canyon. Here's what I've come up with for Sequoia:

  • One of the visitor centers to get our passports stamped, and maybe a junior ranger program?
  • Hospital Rock for the petroglyphs (brief)
  • Hanging Rock for some fun pictures (hopefully brief?)
  • Morro Rock
  • Crescent Meadow (I initially took this one off, but my kids enjoyed El Capitan Meadow at Yosemite so... maybe?)
  • All of the Trees: Giant Forrest Museum (?), General Sherman tree/trail, Congress trail
  • Tokopah Falls

We will likely take things slow (neurodivergent kiddos in tow), and take lots of breaks for snacks and such. Is this too much for a day trip from Yosemite for our crew? Are there things I missed or things that maybe aren't worth it? I tried to map things, but if there is a better order for things I appreciate suggestions!

Rae Lake Loop June 12 - thoughts on conditions?

I am looking to do the Rae Lakes loop in one day on June 12th. I did it back in October so I am familiar with the trail. I am wondering what your thoughts are on what the conditions (snow) will be? I’m looking to pack as light as possible because I want to run as much as I can. ie no microspikes, crampons etc. (I’ll have trekking poles with me). I’m looking for answers like-if you think there will be too much snow on Glenn Pass or Bubbs creek is impassable at that time and any other thoughts you may have if you have done the trail at that time of year. Thank you!

FCFS Campsites on memorial weekend?

We are planning to get to king’s extremely early on saturday morning and camp there for a night. Then get to sequoia’s early sunday morning and camp there for a night. How much of a challenge is this? Is this realistic or should we try for another time?

Cedar Grove Lodge opening question

Does anybody know if the Cedar Grove Lodge in Kings Canyon is currently open?

I asked because I have a reservation to stay in the lodge tomorrow(Friday) until Saturday morning, but I just checked their website and it says that they are currently closed (for the seasonal closure) and will not open until Saturday.

I called the reservation system to see if this was an error since I booked my stay more than 3 months ago but they weren't able to help me. They said if the system allowed me to book then more than likely it will be open and the person told me they saw multiple reservations for Friday so I'm not the only one that's going to show up. It's a 6 - 7 hour drive for me to get there and I don't want to show up with it being closed. Not sure what to do 😅

Rae Lakes/Bubbs Creek crossing conditions?

Hello friends, planning to backpack the paradise valley section of Rae lakes as an out and back to avoid glenn pass (looks snowed in) this weekend. But wanted to know if anyone has intel on crossing the creeks given the snowmelt... is it doable or something we should worry about?

HST early June?

Hi all! I see some permits still available for the High Sierra Trail in early June. Is this even feasible? How do we think the snow situation will look by then?

For context I’m an avid backpacker but I do not have much experience in snow/ice at this time. I’ve used micro spikes and trekking poles but that’s the extent of it. Safety is my #1 priority. Seems like the biggest obstacles will be the Kaweah gap, and obviously Whitney. I can always come back to summit when everything melts or I have more winter experience. I’m more worried about the 99 switchbacks being impassable.

As an alternative plan maybe I could hike half of the trail or as far as comfortable and then return back to crescent meadow? I would appreciate the feedback or any alternative recommendations!

Has anyone hiked to Red chief sequoia tree ?

Apparently it’s the largest tree in the long meadow grove but there isn’t a trail for it. All I know is that it’s .8 of a mile northwest of trail of 100 giants but that’s about it. If anyone has gone to it recently, is there a good route to find it?

Itinerary help for Eagle Scout peak

Hey yall I’m planning a solo trip to climb Eagle Scout peak from crescent meadow trailhead. Are there any recommended close camping spots near the trailhead? Also it seems there’s a one night limit at Hamilton lakes now, what other places are good to camp at before the summit? This will be a 3 day trip

Anyone have any idea why big meadows road is closed?

Went to do some dispersed camping today but about a quarter mile down Big Meadows road, the gate was closed. Stopped by stony creek campground and talked to the camp host who was just as surprised as I was that it was closed.

Is it usually still closed at this time? Everything I’m gathering from the USFS site has the area marked as open (despite the big meadows established campground being closed until June)

Road to Roads End open

It appears the road has opened, does anybody know when that happened? Has anybody driven to the end yet? I'm wondering how the South Fork of the Kings looks right now... if anybody has any photos. The river seems to be hovering around 700 cfs at the moment which seems surprisingly low for this time of the year. I'm used to it being 3,000 cfs or more if my memory serves me (I know we had a very low snow pack),
