Is it hard to find private places to poop above treeline?

I have mostly backpacked in Washington state. I'm doing a trip this year in Sequoia / Kings Canyon NP. We'll be a lot in areas where it's more granite than trees. I'm curious what's the poop situation like? Like, in Washington it was really easy to get to camp and get up in the woods behind a bunch of trees. That won't be the case I would think in the Sierras.

It's given me a little anxiety because I'm also going with people I haven't met yet.

Is it difficult to find places?

Backpacking / Fishing Knife

I’m looking for a benchmade backpacking plus fishing knife. Mostly just cleaning trout while backpacking. Any suggestions?

I’m not ultralight but am a lightweight backpacker.

Currently eyeing the Taggedout. Osborn, or Bugout.

Anyone with the Fenix 8 Pro 51mm Titanium that care share pics

I’m trying to decide if I want the Titanium or DLC Gray. I like the idea of a less sportier looking watch.

Would you choose Beta AR or Beta SL Hybrid for my use case?

I have two rain jackets and want to get rid of one. Which would you keep for my use cases?

I will use it primary for hiking / backpacking during spring, summer, and fall. I don't do winter sports. I would also use it for causal every day rain jacket. However, I live in Texas currently so we're not talking cold rain.

I bought both this spring from resale.arcteryx.com and decided I don't need both. Going to get rid of one.

Had a right thyroid lobectomy 3 weeks ago. Should I cancel upcoming backpacking trip?

Surgeon took it out because I had a nodule for 20 years that I got checked every few years and this time she thought it looked suspicious. Luckily after she sent it off there was no cancer.

I feel pretty great. I would say maybe even better than before right now. Last week, two weeks after surgery, I walked a total of 30 miles for the week including a hike with 1000 ft elevation over 4 miles. I will slowly increase my training until my trip in August. I probably will do a hike this weekend carrying 20lbs.

I get my thyroid hormones checked next week.

When I asked the surgeon about my upcoming backpacking trip in August, she said there would be nothing to worry about. My fitness level shouldn't change.

However, I wanted to hear from folks that have had the same surgery. Is there anything to worry about with this trip? It will be in the sierras and at elevation. I live in Texas, so I know that my endurance level will dip a bit just being at elevation. The trip will be about 8 hours of activity per day for 5 days straight.

Can someone suggest high quality scar sheets for a surgical scar?

I live in the US and looking for something that someone has used and it worked for them. I had half my thyroid taken out and have about a 7 inch scar across my neck.

Thanks

Is there an affordable non-crappy place to stay if visiting Yellowstone and Teton NPs?

I'm researching doing a trip with my wife and two kids ( both teenagers ) to the area. I'll be driving from Austin, Tx. I'm fine driving up to an hour to get into the parks. I'm just looking for a home base that won't break the bank. It would be nice if below 300$ per night.

Thanks

Any advice for something that fits a 2026 outback to protect from hail damage while it's parked?

I live in Texas and we get a lot of big hail here and cars get dinged a lot while parked. Does anyone know of something I can buy for it that'll cover the full vehicle?

I'm 48 and still enjoy software development. I'd like to hear stories from those who are in their 60's.

What's work like at that age? What languages are you using? Do you still enjoy it? Are you still working because you love it or because you have to? Anything, you'd like to talk about regarding being a developer in your 60's, I'd love to read about.

Thanks

I've been a iOS developer for 7 years. In grad school, I took two classes, graphics programming and real-time rendering. I really enjoyed those classes and have played around with metal throughout the years.

I really enjoy the math side of graphics. It scratches an itch that I just can't get with iOS. When I was young, I really liked to draw and have always been a visual person. I also was very good at math.

Anyways, I'm wanting to spend two to three years preparing to be a graphics developer. I don't have much of a passion for iOS development any more and drawing with math excites me.

So two questions:

  1. Is this transition something that is possible?

  2. Does the excitement or passion for drawing with math go away or does it have infinite possibilities where only the limit of your imagination are its boundaries?

I do have one advantage. I work for Apple as an iOS developer. So, I would ideally just internally transfer to a team that works on visionOS.

I have been a SwiftUI developer for 2 years. I want to up my skills to a level where I can get into Apple working on some of their customer facing software.

What path would you approach to achieve this? I want to be able to know the ins and outs of SwiftUI.

I've owned this vehicle for 3 days now and I haven't had a sensor beep at me when getting close to objects when parking yet. I thought there was one. Does it have a front braking sensor?

First off, I would go with the DFC floor version of each.

I would use this for backpacking in the Sierras in Summer. Big Bend NP in Fall / Spring.

I don't particularly like the diagonal floor of Durston tents, BUT only one side of the X Dome 1 is diagonal which I'm fine with.

To me the main differences between the Tarptent and HMG are:

  1. DCF floor weight. Assumed based on X mid pro Durston 0.66, Tarptent 0.96. HMG also 0.96.
  2. I feel like Durston and Tarptent will have better non slope at the ends for condensation to roll down instead of drop down. Might not be an issue in HMG, don't know.
  3. You can buy a liner in the Tarptent to simulate double wall.
  4. By weight I think from highest to lowest will be HMG, Tarptent, then Durston, but it will be so small of a difference to me that this is not an issue.
  5. I feel HMG and Durston will be more sturdy than the Tarptent.
  6. Cost. The HMG is being sold at REI now and I have 375$ worth of gift cards there. Also, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get 20% off come Memorial Day.
  7. In terms of brand loyalty. I like all three brands. If I rated them from best to worst it would be Tarptent, Durston, HMG.

I like the Tarptent because of the optional liner. I like the HMG because I'll get it at a lower cost. I like the idea of the X Dome Pro because of the use of space ( very optimal ). I would probably would get an aluminum set of poles for Tarptent and Durston. Downside to HMG is there is no fiber pole option. Which isn't a biggie.

I currently have booked a guided backpacking trip in early August in SEKI.

I’ve backpacked around 30 nights over the past 4 seasons total.

I’ve recently had surgery and I think I might be stretched paying for the guiding service. Now I’m thinking of just finding something to do solo or one other friend.

I have never been to the Sierras, so the below criteria is really for anywhere in the Sierras.

I’m wanting to get deep in the mountains where you sleep amongst granite peaks and alpine lakes. It doesn’t necessarily have to be challenging, but I would enjoy the challenge if presented. I lost like 50 lbs since my last backpacking trip and want to see what this new body can do.

Any suggestions on anything I can still book?

PRE-APPROVAL WAS THROUGH LOCAL CREDIT UNION NOT THE DEALERSHIP.

I'm trying to decide if I should, or even can at this point:

  1. Call a few credit unions in the area to see if they can do better before accepting
  2. Just accept the loan and then refinance after doing some shopping throughout the week

Thoughts?

In my mind, both have the same result.

Trying to decide between these two. I think I can get the price close enough on the Outback Limited for it to not be an issue.

I would eventually get beefier tires on the Outback and maybe a full size spare.

This will be a car we give to my son one day ( 3-4 years from now ).

  1. I would like to occasionally need to get to backcountry campsites in Big Bend NP. But not any of the roads that defiantly require 4x4.
  2. Daily Driver
  3. Son will learn to drive on it and will own it for college.
  4. Want something I'll enjoy until it's his.

Which would you go for?
