Is my buddy right about his pergola?

Hi, guys. My buddy has a large pergola over his deck in the PNW. He sent these images today and seems sure he needs to remove the entire structure because of cracks in the posts.

I'm not particularly knowledgeable about wood, but a google search leads me to believe this is called
"checking," and completely normal and safe to stay. He seems to think his posts aren’t experiencing the same issue as the links I sent him.

Can any of you fine ladies and gentlemen correct me if I'm wrong? I'm not sure how long it's stood so far, l'd guess at least ten years. I've added video on Imgur here:

Thanks!

Server added a generous tip to cc without permission

We just got back from lunch at an American casual dining chain restaurant. The meal was fine. The service was average. The server was a young woman. Our group paid by card. Before leaving we reviewed the receipt. We had planned to leave a cash tip, but to our surprise found that she already had added a generous amount to the card without our knowledge or permission!

The manager canceled the unauthorized payment and re-ran the card for only the food and beverage total. That was it. No apology, no actions taken. They continued to serve others and walked by our table with (what looked like a smug) smile multiple times. It felt so odd. She knew we were reporting the unauthorized charges, but neither she or the manager seemed bothered.

I was furious they just committed fraud and especially upset that they overcharged our party, which included an elderly person on a budget. Just straight up theft. And my group was still planning to leave a smaller tip after that!

I’m not fond of the pressure to tip for counter service, and the quickly rising “recommended” percentages, but to still feel pressure to tip a server who just stole from you is insane to me.

Remember to check your receipts and bank statements!

Edit: There was no automatic gratuity and our party was well under the threshold if there had been. Yes, even under 4!

Any idea what Wilson is?

Wilson is 17lbs at about a year old. Kind of a dirty cream color coat with black on the tips of the tail. His ears droop and he has an underbite. The shelter thought he was Maltese/Shih Tzu mix. The vet thinks something else because he’s too big for either of those breeds. We would love to know what you think!

Kansas, December 2025 13 y/o boy mauled to death by loose mixed mastiff and pit bull breeds.

Neighbor hurled boy down 'large ravine' after his unleashed dogs mauled him to death while he was biking to buddy's house: AG

A Kansas man is charged with murder after his unleashed dogs — mixed mastiff and pit bull breeds — allegedly mauled a 13-year-old neighbor to death, leading him to pack the boy up and dump his ravaged body "down a large ravine."

Damon Leonard, 47, was charged with second-degree murder and other charges related to the vicious killing of Airen Andula, a Linn County seventh grader who lived down the street from Leonard and was biking to his buddy's house, according to The Kansas City Star.

Airen's family told The Star that the boy was on his way to let his friend's dogs and chickens out in December 2025 when Leonard's canines, which were known to run free, attacked him just days before Christmas.

After the boy was mauled to death, Leonard packed up Airen's body and then hurled it "down a large ravine in a creek bed" around 30 miles away in Missouri, according to an arrest affidavit.

For that, the local father was convicted in Missouri of abandonment of a corpse and sentenced to four years in prison last week. He was charged this week by the Kansas Attorney General's Office with murder, involuntary manslaughter, interference with law enforcement, criminal desecration by unauthorized control of a dead body, and permitting a dangerous animal to be at large.

"I … could have overlooked, you know, the dog attack," Jody Andula, Airen's mother, told The Star in January. "That's just a freak accident, but I can't forgive him for what he did trying to hide my kid from us when we were all looking for him. Playing along like he didn't know where he was at when he did know — that's what I can't accept."

Andula said it was supposed to take Airen just five minutes to ride to his friend's house to tend to their pets — chickens, a pet rooster and dogs — while his family was away, and then another five minutes to ride back.

Airen was biking on a gravel path when Leonard's dogs allegedly attacked him.

"I mean, as a parent, you can't imagine another parent doing [that], let alone watching it, and not helping a child," said Ashlyn Clough, mother of Airen's best friend whom Airen was helping out. "I don't know what was going through his head. It just doesn't make sense why he didn't call 911. Maybe he panicked and he was scared. But even if you were panicked and were scared, you could have at least called."
