Big ol' amateur here, trying to linoprint some origami paper and running into a lot of questions!

Hi! So this is truly my first linocut attempt since I was like 10, but I've been trying different ways to get a monarch wing pattern onto some origami paper for a while now and this week I found my mum had some linocut supplies kicking around so I gave it a shot.

I wasn't sure this would go anywhere, so please excuse the super slapdash print quality... But now that I've made a couple test sheets and tried folding a couple butterflies, and I went to order some supplies to pursue this further but I'm running into some questions and would really appreciate some advice!

  1. are all the water based inks kind of gritty feeling? It feels like I'm going to scrape bits off every time I use my nail to make a crease, which I don't love

  2. I understand oil takes several days or more to dry/cure, but after that point does it stay put pretty well? Is it also fairly satin/matte? Is there any concern about bare paper developing an oily halo near inked areas?

  3. what about the Lino print inks for fabric? Does anyone use those on paper? The flexibility + fact it's made to be washed makes it sound appealing for origami, but maybe I'm missing something?

  4. is there something I could mix into the black ink to give it a glossy finish once dry, or should I be looking at a separate gloss coat on top?

I'd super appreciate any input! My DeSerres shopping cart is both overfull and not cohesive right now lol, I've confused myself 🫠

Another butterfly question

Y'all here posting amazing models and I'm here struggling with a butterfly for the third week in a row... This time, Robert Lang's butterfly from Origami Insects and Their Kin!

It's definitely above my skill level but I've muddled through so far - but I'm absolutely stumped here.

I don't understand how to "reverse-fold the edges in and out on the existing creases" - I'm only familiar with doing a single reverse fold on a corner (lots of butterfly wing shaping does this) or like, making a crane head. It sounds like I'm supposed to alternate reverse folding in and out all down the side and I can't make that make sense in my brain (or with my hands).... I've ripped my paper folding and unfolding trying to figure it out, so I'd appreciate any advice while I muddle my way through back to step 28 🙏

Any tips for the Lafosse butterfly heads?

They're so tricky! I'd usually say I have pretty good dexterity and fine motor control for detail work, but damn if these heads don't make me feel like I've got sausage fingers lol

I've watched a few YouTube tutorials but I feel like everyone accomplishes the heads differently so I'm having a tough time wrapping my head around them.

I'm specifically trying to fold a model with the head style 2, which seems less common unfortunately, so I'd extra appreciate any tips for that one!

Thank you 🦋 🦋 🦋

Monarch butterfly wings

Hi! I've been folding and refolding different lafosse butterflies, trying to find on that I can fold OK and also close enough in shape to a monarch's wings that I could paint the wing pattern on and have it definitely read like a monarch butterfly.

However! I have come to the unfortunate realization that painting bold black lines on top of origami really camoflages all the cool folding and basically looks like I cut a butterfly out of construction paper and painted the pattern on. Like, that picture? That's the origamido butterfly. You can't even tell the wings have those pretty crimps in them 💔

Any ideas on how I could fold a butterfly that clearly reads as a monarch without this issue? I'm playing with the idea of marbling some paper, or maybe I could mc a layer of black mulberry paper cutaway to show an orange layer underneath? Then I could just paint the white spots... I don't know, I'm throwing monarch-wing spaghetti at the origami butterfly wall!

What are your fav sweet but not gourmand scents?

My stash leans gourmand, but I'm having a more androgynous-leaning femme gender moment this spring and my more straightforward sweet scents are feeling boring to me right now.

I love the *idea* of more herbal / green / maybe kind of tart fruit scents, but I've been struggling because my body chemistry is eager to go astringent with a lot of scents that might read as "fresh". Like... Too astringent.

I've found that some level of sweetness helps a lot, but... I'm a bit lost. I have a lot of marshmallow or milky cozy scents but I don't think "herb garden planted in 2 feet of soil over bed of marshmallows" is a thing (probably?)

My best idea is like, hay-ish notes, or a touch of fennel, but im sure there's notes I'm not thinking of since this isn't my area! I'd love any suggestions, for notes and /or scents to check out. Thank you 💚

Canadian Jelly Phone users, I have a weird request

Could you check if the CamAPS FX app by CamDiab Ltd shows as compatible with your jelly phone on the Canadian Play Store? I'd be so so grateful for a Y/N and which model & OS you have!

Play store link is here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.camdiab.fx_alert.mmoll.ca

If you're wondering why - I probably have to get a phone specifically to use with an insulin pump I want, and ideally I'd like it to be small, and inexpensive.... But of course, Unihertz phones aren't on the official list of compatible devices lol.

A couple diabetes Reddit posts make me think it might work, but the posts are a) over a year old, and b) probably by someone in the states, so I'd really appreciate any answers. Thank you!!
