BPAL Lupers 2026: The Faces of the Lovers

After my initial round of Luper samples, I went back for more! So today I’m finally reviewing the full Faces of the Lovers series.

About my tastes: I love a conceptual scent, something inspired by a narrative or a poem or an image -- a scent that tells a story. I'm not that interested in gourmand scents per se, although I enjoy honey, fruit, and cacao. I like scents that evoke other times or places, or put me in tune with a personality or a mood.

BPAL’s Faces of the Lovers series is an amazing exploration of storytelling through scent. If you’re interested in the full esoteric background of these scents, I recommend reading the extended descriptions on the BPAL site, which relate each pair of lovers to the alchemical concepts that also informed the Lovers Tarot card. But for the purpose of this review, all that’s needed is to understand that each scent explores pairs of opposites in the process of transformation, as explored in stories from Western myth and literature. Each one is a reflection on, an interpretation of, and an embodiment of a mythic relationship.

Here are my takes:

Achilles and Patroclus (bronze-bright armor warmed by the sun, salt-wind off the Aegean, crushed amarantos beneath restless feet, and the metallic sting of blood on sand): This is a richly textured scent, slightly metallic, potent. Despite the associations with the Trojan War, it doesn't read to me as overly masculine. It has a scent that makes me think of well-cared for equipment, but not machinery -- this is a more human smell than, say, the BPAL Steamworks scents I've tried. Amarantos, a grain, helps to warm the salt and metallic notes. This is scent of a love that turns the tide of war. Good wear length as well – a scent of endurance.

Apollo and Hyacinthus (golden laurel and sun-warmed skin, cypress shadow and noontide amber, crushed violets, lilies, and poppy, gilded myrrh, date palm, and hyacinth petals): Wet, I smell flowers and fruit and earth, with a foundation of myrrh beneath. I’m often a little leery of cypress, as it easily overwhelms scents for me, but here there is just a trace of that fresh note. It is lovely and sad to think of this harmonious scent as a memorial offering for a lover whom even a god could not protect from death. The main notes linger lightly on drydown, like a memory.

Beatrice and Dante (white rose and scarlet iris, beeswax smoke and frankincense tears, vellum and sacred myrrh, and a thread of red saffron steeped in luminous amber): Wet, the heady florals embody Dante's near-worship and idealization of Beatrice. Frankincense and myrrh, vellum and beeswax smoke evoke Dante's medieval religious context. His longing for Heaven and longing for Beatrice are one, and they are mixed in this scent. The scent dries down to rose with a bit of complexity beneath – floral, but with substance.

David and Jonathan (shepherd’s wool and wild honey, cedarwood and olive leaf, sun-warmed leather, plumes of frankincense rising from a quiet altar, and a thread of red pomegranate seed crushed between steady hands): This scent is well-blended and I'm hard-pressed to pick out notes aside from honey. That being said, it's just a touch sweet and wonderfully textured from the wool/wood/leaves/leather combo -- definitely a unisex scent. It makes me think of being outdoors – I might even call it “pastoral.” Inspired by the intense friendship of David and Jonathan, this scent could be shared between lovers or best friends.

Eve and Adam (skin musk, fig sap, pomegranate, apple skin, and the smoke and warmth of humankind’s newly-kindled fire): Wet, this is juicy apple with something strange and uneasy beneath -- skin musk for the revelation of Eve and Adam’s nakedness and separateness from each other; fire and smoke for the daily work they must do after being expelled, or perhaps from the angel’s flaming sword that bars them from the garden. For me, this scent is tricky; I strain to identify the notes, wondering what is next. Dry, the apple scent remains forward, but troubled by a foreboding of fire and smoke.

Isis and Osiris (blue lotus incense and kyphi resin dancing in a dusk-shadowed temple, black loam of the Nile and green papyrus crushed beneath bare feet, myrrh and cassia steeped in date honey, a glimmer of lapis and gold leaf pressed into linen, and a surge of floodwater returning to parched earth): For me this scent is the perfume equivalent of classical music. I have to give it my full attention -- it's not an easy pleasure; it takes work, but it's worth it. I catch nearly all of the notes at one point or another, wet or dry. The blue lotus is most noticeable wet, and with drydown, the scent integrates into something beautiful and strange: cassia, moist green earth, linen. I imagine myself smelling the Nile basin, the flood and drought cycle that embodies these gods’ relationship. It's really amazing, and also not a beginner's scent. I may wear it for meditation.

Isolde and Tristan (dark wine spilled on oak, pine boughs and love philtres, rose petals and sea-salt, storm-wind over cold stone battlements, myrrh smoke braided with heart-pulses of red musk awash in tears, tinkling fairy bells and the bitter sweetness of forbidden fruit steeped in a silver chalice): Red musk, wine, roses, salt tears: the dangerous bittersweetness of a forbidden love. Wet, this scent is intense, tumultuous, shifting moment to moment, strongly compelling. Something grounds it -- the wood, perhaps. I keep coming back for more. On the basis of scent alone, this one is probably my favorite in the series, though like the other delicate scents in this series, I wish it had longer wear length – it fades after a couple of hours.

Juliet and Romeo (crushed red rose and night-blooming jasmine unfurl over Verona stone warmed by summer dusk, sugared violets and bitter orange peel steeped in pale cypress smoke, with a single thread of myrrh rising like a whispered vow in the dark): Hypnotic florals, jasmine and rose. Everyone knows this story, where a tragic love drives the reconciliation of two warring families. Is there a touch of bitterness beneath? That bitter orange peel? It makes me think of BPAL’s discontinued scent Venice, though this is more sophisticated. Of the Faces of the Lovers series, this is the only one that threatened to become soapy for me, although on drydown, the stony and smoky notes saved it. I imagine Italy when I smell it.

The White Queen and the Red King (crimson musk and white amber twined with solar frankincense and lunar myrrh, warm saffron steeped in cool iris root, gold-threaded honey darkened by silvered benzoin, a marriage of fire and pearl beneath a rain of distant stars): This scent is the least narrative of the group: it directly embodies the symbolism of the alchemical marriage of opposing principles. It's interesting to smell BPAL's forceful, earthy red musk somehow also smelling ethereal (maybe from the resins). Honey comes through clearly as well. This one lasted several hours on my skin and had relatively low throw once dry. I think if I didn't have to go nose to wrist to enjoy it, I might upgrade to a bottle. It's complex and lovely, but quiet.

BONUS (from the related series, Aspects of the Lovers):

The Lovers' Serpent (snake oil, fig, pomegranate, apple, green sandalwood, olibanum, blackcurrant, and iridescent serpent scale accord): A perfume inspired by the serpent in Even and Adam’s garden. This is a juicy, fruity variation on snake oil -- still complex, but lighter. I can't pick out individual fruit notes, but the combination smells fresh and alive, and the snake oil provides its complex spicy musk as a foundation. For me it's a nicely balanced scent. I have no idea what "iridescent serpent scale accord" would be -- I'll be curious to try it in a different perfume, if it appears again, to see if I can pick it out. I’ve been wearing this one regularly in warm weather, where it has had good staying power over the course of the day.

If you enjoy complex storytelling scents, Faces of the Lovers may be for you! For me I suspect these are mostly special occasion scents, with the exception of The Lovers’ Serpent, which I find easy to wear; David and Jonathan also seems like it could make a regular spring rotation. My only complaint is that I wish BPAL had found a Sapphic pairing to honor as well! Sappho and Atthis, or perhaps even Ruth and Naomi, given that David and Johnathan’s friendship made the cut? Perhaps for a future Lupercalia!

A painting inspired by Solstice Scents' Victorian Picnic

Hi IMAM! Is fan art of perfume a thing? I had a lot of fun imagining my own picturesque fantasy picnic based on the notes of Victorian Picnic (Pound Cake, Loquat-Lemon Glaze, Orange Blossoms, Wisteria, Ladyfingers, Jasmine, Azalea Leaf & Riesling). 💜

Cannabis - but not head shops

Looking for a cannabis scent that is *actually* cannabis, and not what people who smoke cannabis smell like 😅

I want green, spicy, citrusy, and a hint of skunk - no patchouli, please. Neon Noir by Stone & Wit is already a favorite!

Luxury Indie Makeup Brands

TLDR: Please give me suggestions for indie brands that have a luxurious/high quality feel and aesthetic to them.

Please feel free to tell me if there aren't any brands that fit my taste, so that way I can at least stop the search

I'm looking to explore more into the indie makeup scene, but I'm honestly someone who really does care about packaging/aesthetic and how a product will look on my vanity. I know indies usually have less money to throw at packaging since running a business is extremely costly, but I'm personally willing to spend more money for the experience if the brands are out there. I already have some indie brands that I like (listed below), but I'm trying to expand my horizons.

For reference, when I say I like a "luxurious" feel/aesthetic, I usually like minimalism, clean lines, little-to-no graphics, and bold colors. I also really like a editorial or MUA-professional vibe. Brands with a strong and artistic design identity.

Here are the indie brands I already like:

  • Ami Cole (discontinued)
  • Aora Makeup
  • Fara Homidi (indie according to Google?, idk)
  • MOB Beauty
  • Rituel de Fille
  • Soshe
  • Tanielle Jai

Non-indie brand's whose aesthetics I appreciate:

  • Byredo
  • Isamaya
  • MAC
  • Westman Atelier
  • Victoria Beckham Beauty

Early Morning Sunrise at the Shore

I grew up near the beach along the east coast and I no longer live there. I miss my hometown all the time, and today I'm missing the early mornings going out to the beach before light has arrived to catch the sun rising over the shoreline. A little chilly no matter the time of year because of the misty fog, wind, salt spray from the ocean, and cold sand that hasn't been warmed by sunrays yet, but there was always something about it that felt so contemplative and comforting, like the rest of the world would melt away while you sat in the stillness of the moment, just you and the ocean waiting for the sun. Those were some of the happiest moments of my life (youthful, joyful memories spent with family followed by a stop at the local diner before heading home) and the darkest (times when everything felt so lost and hollow that only the vastness of the sea could swallow up the pain i was carrying and bring me ease). The ocean feels like a dear friend I've been parted from for over half a decade.

So, all that to say, I would love an atmospheric perfume that captures that feeling/experience. I would especially appreciate recommendations from anyone who has also shared those kind of memories at the shore and knows what I'm describing firsthand. Bonus points if you have a separate recommendation for a classic diner scent I could pair with it: think black coffee, toast, maybe even a light electrical note for the lights or equipment. Love this community and thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Fall Perfume: Indie and Niche Pretty Please

Okay, I was looking through my collection and realized I barely own any true fall fragrances. The only ones that really fit the vibe are English Major by Sorce and Orphéon by Diptyque.

My winter collection is stacked with coffee gourmands and vanillas, but apparently my fall shelf is seriously lacking.

I'd love your recommendations! I'm on a bit of a budget, so I'd love to keep it under $100 if possible, but I'm willing to stretch to around $120 if something is really worth it. Indie, niche, or designer I don't mind as long as it screams fall.

Thanks in advance!

Atwood parfum review ⛵

Atwood parfum is an indie/niche perfume brand inspired by Cape cod, specifically Provincetown! Provincetown is known for being an LBTQ+ hotspot and is overall just gorgeous.

My husband and I went to Cape Cod for our honeymoon so the area is near and dear to my heart. So onwards, to my newbie review!

Boy beach: Fig, dune grass, hot skin, salty sea breeze.

One me this one begins with something more woody and dry - almost scratchy. I assume it's the gune grass? It's not my favorite note. After about an hour though it settles down into a lovely sweet skin scent. The fig is there, smelling like nectar and there's a faint hint of sunscreen if you take a deep enough whiff. The salty breeze is very fresh, it's more ocean than bay if you know what I mean lol.

I love this one so much but it seems to fade faster on me. I'm really addicted to the hint of sunscreen in this! It makes me curious what the real life Boy Beach is like, but it's an adult nude beach so I'll have to pass 😝

Penuche: Salty breeze, leather grips, vanilla ice cream in a waffle cone.

A lot of reviews raved about the waffle cone note but unfortunately my nose doesn't pick it up really at all. But the *leather* note! I'm usually put off by leather notes but this is so smooth and warm. It reminds me of when I walked into a handmade leather store in Italy. The leather has an almost sweet quality to it which is hard to explain if you've never smelled this type of leather before. The owner cites bicycle seats as the inspiration but if you've ever been to Provincetown the first thing you might think of is the plethora of ahem...leather stores 🤭

I do really like this one. As it is it's a scent I would prefer to spritz on my husband than wear myself but I may try to layer it with more ice cream scents to see if I can coax out that waffle cone.

Beech Forest: Pitch pine, dry sandy forest floor, coyote musk, dry wood.

This scent gets a lot of hype for how realistic it is and I AGREE. Wow. He has absolutely without a doubt captured this place in a bottle. It is sitting in the shade of an evergreen forest in the afternoon when the temperature has just begun to drop. To me this scent leans very masculine with the heavy resinous woods and I am definitely considering full sizing this for my husband. Which I need to emphasize is a big deal because I've been in a loyal relationship with his Versace pour Homme, but this is the only scent I've ever smelled that has competed in my brain.

Overall. These scents are all beautiful. I had all the samples in a little baggy and they smell divine all mixed together! The owner really is capturing little pieces of cape cod and bottling them up. I was really skeptical at first because the marketing reminded me a lot of other companies out there promising to bottle up memories of places but not really living up to the idea. I'm really looking forward to following the creators journey as he adds more smells to his catalogue!

Yes I found a hydrangea bush to pick just for this little photo op. Do not tell my leasing office. I repeat. Do not tell my leasing office I damaged their landscaping.

Indie Houses with a strong POV?

I love great storytelling as much as the perfume itself. Of course storytelling can't make up for a scent that isn't for me, but it's what first piques my interest. The POV can be for the perfume itself or the overall house!

I'm open to lots of scent profiles but I find myself regularly falling for greens (like tomato vine, snapped stems, herbs), airy florals, gourmand as a feature not the main story, industrial notes, off the beaten path combos.

Bonus: minority owned (LGBT, BIPOC, immigrant, disabled...)
My hard nos: brands that use AI, rebottle fragrance oils, support the current administration

fragrances similar to Hexennacht's Haunted Tea-Cosy?

i recently got a 1 mL dabber of it in a sample set from someone else, and i fell in love instantly. to my nose, it's a creamy black tea with an added spice, and that spice note took it from great to amazing for me. so it's just my luck that it seems to have been discontinued :') does anyone have any recommendations for something similar?

the notes are: black tea, shortbread scones, Devonshire cream, spiced orange marmalade

Rhyme or Reason to sensitivities?

Hi all,

So ever since I started on my perfume journey a couple years ago, I have noticed I am "sensitive" to some fragrances. I've always known I am sensitive to fragrance generally, as I cannot handle any kind of plug in fresheners or dryer sheets or anything like that, they give me headaches. When I started with perfume, I noticed some things seemed to irritate me, like make me sneezy or my eyes water. I've been keeping an excel sheet to track what I try in order to make sense of it, but 2 years in and I am still struggling!

I can tell some houses must use something consistently that irriate me, and those are pretty easy to spot and I stay away from them. But then I have some houses that some are great and some are terrible and the notes list give me no clue.

For example, I first tried Poesie and had really bad reactions to them, but it was mostly their cardamom scents. Some of their scents, like Titania, I have no issue with and absolutely LOVE. I just got their bunny collection and 400 Bunnies has me sneezing up a stoooormmm this morning and I just for the life of me can't figure out what in it could be an issue--bunny musk?!

Or, is it also possible that it's just the way the odor molecules effect my nose on any given day? Like the way they "bind"? (can you tell I am not a nose scientist here... lol). I know I should try each scent again to see if they irritate me again but it's not fun...like fool me once, you know?

Does anyone else deal with sensitivities, and if so, how do you approach trying new things? I mean thankfully mine aren't so bad that I am afraid to try most things--I can handle the occasional headache or sneeze fest. But, it's not ideal and I'd love to hear what others do to handle/figure it out!

I think this is also a way for me to vent because I really wanted to love 400 Rabbits. The thought of it is wonderful, I love me a margarita...

Help finding dark/spicy attraction oil

I’m trying to find a scent that evokes a mid-1990s pagan-shop “Attraction Oil” I bought in Denver. It seemed thick and maybe dark/greenish. The scent felt spicy, hypnotic, mysterious, seductive, and a little exotic.

I’m not expecting to find the exact original formula anymore, I’m trying find a modern product with the same feel.

I feel like the key note was clove bud, or maybe cinnamon leaf. Not candy, chai, red-hots, holiday spice, or baked goods; this was an unsweetened spice.

What I’m looking for:

A ritual oil / anointing oil / body oil, not a perfume oil. I don’t want it to linger in the room after I leave. I want something intimate and skin-close.

What I want to avoid: sweet, candy, powedery, laundry, florals, smoky.

Any recommended products? Thanks!! I'm going insane trying to find something.

Nui Cobalt Bee Not Afraid

This evening I went on a gorgeous drive to hike, just me and my dog. We went to my absolute favorite place, a Nature Preserve with an incredible ecosystem found in only a couple other places in the world. We walked a ways, found a few wild blueberries, and had a little picnic out there while thunder rolled in the far distance. I have been excited to go there all summer, and I wanted to wear a scent that evoked the landscape, and the feelings of awe and joy, peace, and solitude that I feel when I am there.

Enter: Nui Cobalt's Bee Not Afraid: Angelic incense, Cirrus clouds, glowing beeswax candles, bedstraw, and ancient honey gathered from a cathedral hive. I love all these notes, and in this blend they are all somehow quite dark, in a peaceful and almost solemn way.

It feels like walking through a grassy meadow on an early-summer day, the bright blue sky streaked with high-up, wispy clouds. At the far edge of the meadow, there is a tiny stone chapel, and you enter into the silent sanctum, dark but for the light of low-burning candles along the altar. The dimness is a respite from the bright sky. The air inside is still and scented with melted beeswax and incense burned during a thousand sermons past. Outside, the bees buzz ceaselessly, gathering nectar from tangled thickets of bedstraw; inside, a solemn peace fills the silence and soothes your heart and mind.

I wore it on this little trip partly because it suits the vibe of my nature sanctuary so well: it is a solemn kind of place, yet teeming with birds and insects. I feel very small there, in the same way looking at the stars makes one feel small.

I also hoped to make a scent memory on this little excursion, in hopes that I can put on a dab of Bee Not Afraid during our long, cold winters, and feel connected to that place and that feeling once again.

7 Alkemia samples reviewed by a fragrance noob!

I had my eye on Alkemia fragrances for a while, I really liked the variety they offer and the pricing is pretty reasonable, so I decided to order a custom set of samples and give them a shot!

Just for a bit of context, I'm fairly new to fragrances in general because I was nose blind from Covid for quite a while, but its become a new hobby of mine and this is the first time I'm doing a review :)

I prefer earthy, spicy, and woody fragrances in general so I am biased towards those, but I tried to pick a wide range of samples!

Aelfscyne - 8/10

I find this to be a gorgeous, green scent, it makes me feel like a wood elf! It smells very fresh and light to me, so it's perfect for a hot summer or spring day. On my skin it's unmistakably floral, but in a way that feels very natural rather than perfumey. I was kind of expecting more woodiness from this one but it's more floral and leafy, it kind of smells like honeysuckle and green tea as it continues to dry down.

I love feeling like a Bosmer so I adore this fragrance, if I could pick up on the cashmeran more it would definitely be a 10/10

As Dark Things Are Meant To Be Loved - 4/10

This one's pretty popular so I had high expectations for it, but unfortunately it's not my type. I was hoping that the coffee, lapsang souchong, and the overall smokiness of the fragrance would be more prominent, but it just smells very sweet to me. I'm not a big gourmand girlie and the coconut, caramel, and vanilla smell is too strong for me and kind of made me a little nauseous. I'm going to let this one sit for some more time and maybe my opinion will change.

However if you love gourmand scents, and you're looking for a sugary fragrance that also has a darker vibe, you might really like this one. It made me think of a caramel addicted witch 🧙

Enchantee - 10/10 ⭐️

This one is a pleasant smell, it's kind of similar to Aelfscyne but is noticeably less floral. I can pick up on the sandalwood note here and I like it a lot! Both fragrances are green and fresh smelling, but it feels like they embody different aspects of nature. Aelfscyne makes you feel like a wood elf living in the forest tending to a beautiful garden, while Enchantee feels like walking along a mossy path with a winding stream next to it. The moss and tea notes are noticeable here and very beautiful.

If I had to pick something Enchantee reminds me of, it would be the Portland Japanese Garden. It feels like a quiet and subtle beauty, very wearable and refreshing.

Persian Tea Room - 9/10

As a tea lover I had to try this one! The first thing I noticed is the cinnamon is very prominent in the opening, which I had mixed feelings towards. The other notes become more noticeable quickly, and it starts smelling like a warm cup of chai. My family is from India and I find the chai-ness of this fragrance pretty authentic and it brings up nostalgic memories.

The description mentions "dry desert sand" and I was wondering how on earth you could capture that in a perfume oil but somehow, this one does. I love how vivid this fragrance feels, to me it smells like old depictions of India as an exotic, mysterious place and it makes me feel like a baddie. The only reason it's not a 10/10 is because of the cinnamon opening because it reminds me of starbucks chai (which I'm not too fond of) but the rest of it is amazing!!!!

Hell Courtesan - 10/10⭐️

I didn't know what to expect from this one cause I couldn't find too many reviews on it, but the description drew me in. Florals can be hit or miss for me so I was keeping my expectations lower but this one was unexpectedly gorgeous!

The florals here are rich and deep, they really do smell like nighttime flowers. I was wondering what the brimstone note here would be like, and it manifests itself as a subtle touch of smokiness in the background. Somehow the smoke mixes beautifully with the flowers and makes this fragrance smell so mysterious and classy.

The imagery it brings to mind is a field of red spider lilies under a starry sky. "Hell Courtesan" is a damn good name for it, it really feels like a rich demon lady.

Bonus samples!

Uncharted: 8/10
This one leans more towards the masculine side of unisex, but I feel like women can definitely pull it off! If anyone here is familiar with the Uncharted series of video games, I think if the first game had a smell it would be this one.
It smells woody and a bit smoky, but has a touch of sweetness to it that reminds me of coconut.
It brings some very specific memories to mind, like the wooden stuff my mom used to check out at Pier 1 imports.
it's a pleasant smell and I feel like you can wear it year round, the smokiness makes it nice for fall and winter but it's light enough to not feel cloying in the summer.

Paradise: 6.5/10

This feels like Uncharted's more traditionally "feminine" counterpart, it's more sweet smelling for sure. While the coconut in Uncharted was more subtle, in Paradise it feels like the main event, which is why I found it less appealing. I'm not a coconut hater but when there's too much of it it reminds me of my mom slathering coconut oil on my head when I was a kid, which I have mixed feelings about 😔 The vanilla in this is very pretty though, and if you like soft, summery scents it's pretty great! One thing I really liked about this one is how airy it feels despite being sweet, it doesn't feel like it would give me a migraine and it's definitely wearable in the humid summers where I live. I'm gonna give it another chance, maybe it'll grow on me.
