hobbyists who like books from academic and university presses: what is your process for finding your books?

i do the below and i'm always interested in more ways - especially ways to find such books when starting from keywords or key terms of interest

  • checking reference lists on books i already read or know about
  • searching for said books or keywords/key terms in z-library's full-text search
  • browsing the actual catalogs of university presses
  • browsing bookshelves of goodreads friends who have similar interests (usually how i find the more oddball books)

MLBB lip stains that run very, very warm (and thus won't turn purple) BUT also without being orange or brown?

For reference, Romand Almond Rose is very purple on me and Elf Cherry Cola is cooler than I'd like. I have very yellow skin and cooler pink lips. I like Romand's Eat Dotori, Vintage Ocean, Brick River but only if I'm wearing other makeup, otherwise they are too bright and warm. I have ordered Romand Nucadamia, Dark Coconut, Woody Sunset, Rose Stream and I'm waiting for Elf Maple Latte to be in stock

I want something that looks NATURAL, not purple, not orange, not nude or brown, not fluorescent, not gray, N A T U R A L

Is there a way to browse a genre and see the books from ALL my libraries? Does clicking "deep search" once you're on a genre accomplish this?

Let's play a game: take a boring, basic notes list and re-brand it so it sounds cool and indie! ✨

Earlier this week, I made a post asking about perfumes where the branding does a lot of the heavy lifting for the vibe. Today, I want to do the opposite. Take a simple notes list - either from a real indie perfume or just a hypothetical combination - and rewrite it (as seriously or as humorously as you prefer).

Examples:

  1. hay → "Dust Devil": a sudden swirl of golden hay splintered in the sun across the empty plains
  2. tomatoes, ivy → "We Don't Go Into the Garden": the acidic skin of a bruised tomato, green vines snapped by a masked intruder, and overgrown creeping ivy
  3. tea, sugar, metal → "Lost Signal": oversteeped tea gone cold with three slightly dissolved sugar cubes, and the metal tang of a short-circuiting radio transmitter

Perfumes where the name, notes, or marketing does a lot of heavy lifting for the ~vibe~? 👀

I love conceptual perfumes, but I can be a sucker for fun branding. I wonder which perfumes would be way less hyped if they had a boring name or simple note list.

ELDO's name for "Ghost in the Shell" makes it seem so much cooler than what it is - a plasticky, mossy lactonic - including for people who typically stay away from experimental scents. I wonder how much people would like it without the preconception of a humanoid cyborg. I haven't sniffed it yet myself, but I wonder what I'd think of Heretic's Nosferatu if I went in knowing the branding versus not knowing.

What are other examples?

As for indie perfumes, I think this applies to a lot of Sixteen92 scents. "I Killed The Teenage Dream" is a standard synthetic gourmand; but the duct tape note makes it seem so edgy. "Polybius" is supposed to be dusty neon, arcade games, hot wires, etc, but it mostly just smells like a dusty musk.

I don't really believe in "skin chemistry" altering perfumes much, but that people say it as it's more polite than "nose chemistry" or "brain chemistry".

I'm sure it happens occaisonally but almost all perfumes (mainstream/niche/indie) I've tried smell the same sniffing, on paper, on clothes, on me, and on others. Skin hydration, microbiome, pH, diet, and hormones DO differ, but not THAT much. The overreliance on it gives me psuedoscience vibes. I think it's somewhat more likely they *smell* different to our noses, and definitely more likely that we *perceive* them differently based on our likes, expectations, prior perfumes, etc. Same as how two people can eat the same food or flavour and have wildly different opinions. I'm totally open to being proved wrong though and am trying to find more scientific articles on it. What do you think?
