Why does Libby (a free app) have the best UI out of any audiobook platform on the market

I've listened to audiobooks using Libby, Spotify, and Audible. It boggles my mind and frustrates me to no end that Spotify and Audible both require paid services to access books, yet Libby still has the best usability among all 3.

I love how on Libby, it's always easy to tell what percentage of the way through you are on a book. It makes updating progress on sites like Goodreads very easy.

I hate how on Spotify, when you change the speed of a book, it also changes the speed of podcasts?! I literally never want to listen to podcasts at any more than 1.0x speed. Why does Spotify assume my listening preference for audiobooks and podcasts are the same!

I also think on Libby, it's much easier to add bookmarks, and drag your place between chapters.

Does anyone else notice, agree, or have explanations about these small quality of life features?

Using Libby and Hoopla

I love using the eservices from the library. But I keep hearing that they are very expensive for the library.
How can I best utilize the resources and support the library?
Should I use Libby over Hoopla? Or not use Hoopla at all as I hear this is by far the most expensive.
Is there any best practices for these online services?

This last year I found that I love ebooks and audiobooks. I went from reading maybe 2 books in 2024 and prior, in 2025 I read 25, and this year I’ve hit 35 already since getting a kindle at the beginning of the year. But I worry about the costs to the library

TIA

Why was I bumped to the front of the line?

I just put this book on hold last night and immediately it said I was first in line. Yet there are 76 people waiting?! I woke up this morning and it’s ready to borrow? What happened? This was not a “skip the line” offer, just regular hold.

Any idea what this means? Says it for all my linked cards.

I’ve tried everything except deleting and reinstalling the app (trying to avoid so I don’t have to sign in to all my cards again)

Can I have different cards with different names?

My library in CT is tiny and has no reciprocity with larger areas. My libby has my mothers card attached to it, but is synced to my kindle. If I bought an out of state card could I have both on my libby account or do they have to match? Side note, thinking of buying the Rochester, NY card for $25 a year if anyone has feedback.

Trouble shoot

Any reason as to why Libby is refusing to let me verify my card? I’ve had my account for years and it just started doing this.

what’s everyone’s favorite books of 2026 so far?

i know this is too early to say but i’m curious. this list has my top favorite books for this year so far (thank you, libby). i’m curious to see what everyone’s top 10 looks like!! or if you haven’t gotten to that amount, what are your top 3 books?!

i do read YA and nonfiction, i just don’t like ranking them together. how i approach these 3 genres (classics/ lit fic, nonfiction and YA) are very different and i don’t think it’s fair for me to rank them against one another.

(also “arc” means advanced reader copy, books that hadn’t been published at the time when i read them.)

Help!

When I try and send my Libby book to kindle, I go to log into Amazon, and I get getting this error message. Anyone experience this before? I've restarted my phone, made sure apps are updated, waiting 12 hours to see if it was just a glitch.. any and all help is appreciated!

Article: How audiobooks can help with burnout

I was reading the Libby blog and thought this article about how audiobooks help with burnout was really interesting.

I've personally always felt it helped my anxiety but it is cool to see it is a real and not just something I convinced myself of one day.

Regrets for borrowing instead of suspending...

I wish libby offered an option to suspend recently borrowed books... these are both new books, but they're both kind of chunky. I love Amina Al-Sirafi's story, but the demand for Ballad of Falling Dragons is higher and I feel guilty not reading it immediately...

I was looking forward to Ballad of falling dragons, but the plot of the first book was so scattered and messy that I just want to continue reading the tapestry of fate, because I know it'll be better constructed and cohesive 🥲

Sorry fans of Sarah Parker at my library, I promise to get to it in a few days 🙇‍♀️

New Orleans Public Library

Unfortunately, New Orleans Public Library is no longer offering or renewing Non Resident cards.

I purchased a non-resident card last year and it was wonderful. It's due to expire on May 20, 2026, so I asked if they were automatically renewing it with my card as they said they would and I received this email reply back.

"Due to an unsustainable demand and the rising cost of e-resources, we are no longer accepting applications or renewing non-resident cards online. Interested U.S. residents can still stop by any of our locations to renew for $100.00."

Content Reserve??

I'm trying to download the .epub of a book I borrowed in order to send it to Kindle, but all that downloads is an .acsm document from contentreserve.com

I assume this is where Libby stores its books (or where my library does) but I can't access the .epub

Is it possible to get a library card to add Libby while visiting another state?

I will be staying at a hotel and my son will start college in Boston.

Does it harm the library to check out the same book on Libby and also a physical book?

I like to go back and forth reading between my kindle and a physical book. Since physical books are most readily available, I’ll wait until it’s ready on Libby and then check it out both ways. Does this harm the library to have the book checked out both ways? I’ll also even check out the audiobook as well to have all options..

Do you ever let it come down to the last minute?

Just curious if anyone else lives on the edge like me lol. I have so many loans to get through, that sometimes I end up waiting until the last day to listen to an audiobook. The one I'm currently listening to, Where the Girls Were by Kate Schatz, is due in 2hrs and 4mins and I have 1hr and 40mins left in the book! Also, a few days ago I returned Leave Your Mess At Home after finishing it with 36mins left in the loan.

Why are there such strict limitations on how many ebooks Libby can lend out?

I just started using it, but like almost all the books I was hoping to borrow are either not available, or have basically a waiting list.

I can kind of understand the limited number of books, but why is it different from location to location, and not just one big database we can pull from?

Not available on kindle?

Hi all. For the first time, I got a book on Libby that does not seem to be available on kindle. It only seems to work in the Libby app. See screenshot below which just says “open book” as opposed to “read with kindle”.

Is there any way to open the book on a kindle or no?
