Underrated Appalachian Road

For anyone nearby I highly recommend Highway 160 from Lynch, Ky to Big Stone Gap, Va. Many people in this sub are on the west coast I’ve noticed so I figured some of the east coast people may be interested. It’s around 25, miles with 200+ curves and a TON of elevation change. You’re climbing and descending Black Mountain which is the highest point in Kentucky.

There is a gift shop in Lynch Ky and there is not too much traffic on this route. In my GR most of it was 3rd gear with downshifts to 2nd in curves. A ton of switchback curves, hairpins, chicanes etc. No rumble strips and amazing views along the way. 55mph speed limit the whole way.

You’re also going to be close by to other great roads such as Highway 421. Only thing I will tell you to look out for is black bears in the road. This area is absolutely packed with them so your chances of seeing one are high. I saw two during one pass.

Dreaded Bumper Hang + Fix

After work I noticed my bumper had a noticeable panel gap on both sides randomly. It’s been near 100 degrees here over the past few days so maybe the plastic clips expanding played a role? Anyways this annoyed my so I immediately went to Google and found this is a common issue on Corollas and GR Corollas alike.

I came across the part that fixes it made by 555engineering but I don’t want to wait on shipping and on epoxy to bond for a full day. I daily this car. So then I came across this article: https://hanksgr.com/Front_Bumper_Fix.htm by “HanksGR”. Decided to go cut some rather crude shims out and see how it went.

It did work, maybe not as good as Hank’s did but props to him for the idea.

You essentially insert shims, or spacers, in the the slots where your bumper clips in using VHB 3M tape so the clips fit more snug and the bumper stays more secure. It worked, hopefully it lasts.

Below I attached some before, during and after pics.

Heel-Toe Options?

Coming from my WRX the pedal spacing in the GR is not really ideal for heel-toeing. I can do it but it’s definitely a different technique than is engrained in my muscle memory.

I know this topic has been discussed and there are aftermarket options but now that the car has been out for a few years what’s the consensus on best pedal set up? I’ve seen throttle extensions and pedal plates or something similar to that. I’m interested what everyone is running. Random pic.

Only Two Oils Needed?

Hey guys I am planning to change my trans and diff oil this weekend and I am going with Redline oil. I have researched this and watched multiple videos but I’m still reading conflicting info? Some say these two oil types. The videos I’ve watched used these two specifically but then I read forums saying there’s actually 3 separate oils needed?

My car is a 2023 manual trans WITH the performance pack torsen LSDs.

Are these two oil types the only two types I need for this maintenance service? MT-LV for the trans/front diff and then the 75-85 for the rear diff and transfer case? Can someone with experience of the job the knows for sure please just tell exactly what I need. Thanks in advance.

Met Some GRs on the Dragon

Took my GR to US129 aka the Tail of the Dragon today. Was happy when I came out of Deal’s Gap store at the end to see two other GRs parked with me. Amazing day and the road is the best I’ve ever driven!

Made a Change Today

Drove 4.5 hours to get it. Got a great deal on this 23 Core with the performance pack, tech pack and cold weather pack. Driving it back was amazing and this car feels much more raw than my WRX. WRX was an awesome car and a lot of fun but I’ve wanted a GRC since they’ve came out. Glad the prices have come down to earth and the car even exceeded my expectations in the 200 miles I’ve put on it 😁😁

Currently in ETuning process and I’ve noticed something strange. My DAM will occasionally drop, typically to .688, without any feedback knock being registered? Seems it correlates with conditions which give -2.11ish fine knock learn..

I suppose my question is can fine knock learn independently cause DAM drops? I don’t understand this. It typically occurs in 4th gear tip-in to boost. Again the car won’t register any current knocking (FBK) but when I hit those right conditions for the car to pull timing via fine knock learn I will get a DAM drop that quickly goes back to 1.000. I’ve researched but not found much info on this.

During Etuning, Anthony (Dmann) suggested I should get a catch can soon as I had some noise and knock in Cylinder #1. While installing I also went ahead and replaced the PCV valve with a new OEM one. Here is mine after 45,000 miles. Not sure how well the video picks it up but you can hear oil sloshing inside it..

Hey all. I’m currently getting my car Etuned by Dmann. The car is all stock with ETS intake. He stated via email that he is having to add an abnormal amount of fuel via scaling and he suspects a possible vacuum leak. I am going to be getting the car smoke tested tomorrow where should I pay special attention to?

Also the car is having a bit of a knock issue which he (and I) suspect is PCV related. I ordered a new PCV and a Mishimoto catch can. If the car passes the smoke test is it possible it has an issue with the PCV valve itself and that could be causing lean condition? Thanks.
