Sony Mavica FD75 Battery Emulator

Just showing off this thingy I made after becoming irrationally annoyed with 1990's Sony for implementing battery DRM that prevented me from powering the camera with an external power source. This thing is running on an Arduino Nano soldered to a custom PCB I made on my CNC. Basically just injects the initial handshake message over and over and that apparently keeps the camera happy or confused enough to stay powered on and fully functional. Sooo uhh... take that Sony!

Made an external power adapter for the Mavica FD75

https://reddit.com/link/1vqcgc6/video/92d7uzveqtjh1/player

Just wanted to show this thing I came up with to allow you to power the camera with an external power source. I got frustrated when I tried to power my camera with a power supply since the battery was totally dead and the stupid thing told me I had to use a genuine infoLithium battery then shut down so I made this that tricks the camera into allowing the external power supply to work. If anyone is interested in making one themselves, just let me know and I will go through the trouble to upload all the files to 3d print it and program the Arduino Nano.

75% Hydration French Baguette Dough in Halo Core

Here is a 75% hydration French Baguette Dough. This is 875g of very sticky wet dough and the spiral mixing design seems to handle it very well.

Coffee Cake in Ooni Halo Core

Some people were unaware that the Halo Core can do things other than make pizza dough so here is a clip of it mixing up some cinnamon coffee cake batter. Did fantastically imo.

Ooni Halo Core First Impression

Ooni Halo Core was delivered last night too late to start a batch of dough so I waited until this morning to try it out. First impression is very positive. Everything feels high quality and it seemed to make a nice ball of dough, which is to be expected given the steep price. This is my first experience with a spiral mixer so I don't have a frame of reference to how it stacks up against other spiral mixers. It definitely seemed to struggle a lot less than my old KitchenAid stand mixer. This clip was showing about 6 minutes into a 900g 65% hydration dough batch on speed setting 4.

To the people that asked why I change my break-in oil at 300 miles, this is why:

Several people have asked why I planned to change my oil at 300 miles instead of just waiting for the first official service interval at 600 miles. These pictures should explain why. I changed the oil and filter at 273 miles and then cut the filter open. You can see all sorts of crud in the filter housing. I don't want all that junk flowing through my engine which is why I change the oil and filter before you are supposed to. I'll change it again at 600 miles and tear that filter apart to see if it looks any better.

To anyone that sees this and freaks out at the sight of so much metallic debris, do not worry. This is fairly typical of what I have seen in all of my new bikes. Maybe just a tiny taddddd bit more than I would have expected, but nothing that concerns me at all. Now, if the next few filters all look like this, then I will start to worry haha.

Improved 3D Printed ZX-4R Radiator Guard

Made a beefier radiator guard based on feedback I got from the first one I posted a few days back. This one is made of glass reinforced ABS plastic and weighs 150 grams (~.3 pounds). It is raised off the radiator fins and quite stiff so it would take a substantial impact to actually reach the radiator fins and cause any damage.

You will need a large printer that can handle high temperature filaments like ABS to print this. I made it on a Bambu H2C printer. The entire thing is 3D printable including the pins needed to hold it to the radiator. It only takes a few seconds to install or remove and can be done without taking off any fairings.

Made a Tool to Adjust the Front Fork Preload

Just showing off this tool I made to adjust the preload on the front fork without damaging the metal of the weird adjustment screw. If anyone wants the file, let me know.

I ended up setting mine to 6 turns and it feels perfect for my weight of 200 lbs.

Here is the 3D model file if anyone wants to print one themselves: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3008656-zx-4rr-front-fork-pre-load-adjustment-tool#profileId-3378721

Experimenting With 3D Printed Radiator Guard

Just wanted to see what y'all thought about this idea. I've been riding around with a few prototypes the last few days and initial results have been encouraging. I tried to balance protection from rocks with the least obstructive airflow design I could come up with. I haven't noticed any obvious increase in coolant temps and it was around 100f today. My biggest concern with the 3d printed aspect of this would be the part's resistance to heat deformation. This prototype yellow one is ABS with glass fiber reinforcement. So far there are no signs of deformation. It weighs only 60 grams so weight impact is negligible.

Anyone using a BTMoto tune on their ZX-4?

Just looking for anyone that has used a BTMoto tune on their bike. I used BTMoto for my S1krr because they are the most recommended tuner for BMW and the tune on that bike is fantastic. More importantly, I already have the programmer so theoretically I could just use that on my ZX-4 and not have to pull the ECU out to send out to a mail-in tuner.

Their dyno graph looks nice and linear which I am a fan of. Peak of 70hp and 27 lb-ft. They don't seem to have as much of a reputation amongst the Japanese bike community though.

What are your thoughts?

Traded my S1000 RR for a ZX-4RR for a few hours

For those that were asking me to provide an update on my new ZX-4RR test ride today, here it is:

TL;DR: bike is awesome, gonna get one.

I've been eyeballing the ZX-4RR since it first released, but always hesitated because of the price. I can buy a brand new left over 2025 ZX-6R KRT ABS right now for less than $1,000 more than this 2026 ZX-4RR. That's a tough pill to swallow when you're just looking at the specs on paper.

I started riding 3 years ago and I'm in my mid-30s, 200 lbs, 6' 1" for some relevant biographic information. I started learning on a 2021 MT-07 which was a blast because of all the torque but I kinda grew to dislike it because it sucked at higher speeds with no wind protection. I traded that for a 2025 ZX-6R in January 2025. Awesome bike that I put 2000 miles on in a year, but it always felt like something was missing and I was looking for more so I traded that on a new 2026 S1krr during the winter.

The S1krr is insane, there is really no other way to put it. It can be tame when you want but it almost makes me feel guilty when I'm riding around town in 1st gear and the engine almost wants to stall because the rpms are so low. This is a bike that will easily earn you a speeding ticket in first gear. Don't regret it, will probably keep it forever but after nearly a year with it, I've started to mentally cheat on it with the thought of a ZX-4RR. It would be the perfect small "cheap" bike to abuse around town so I don't feel guilty riding the BMW 3 miles to the gym and back every day.

I almost feel bad for my salesman because I've wasted so much of his time kicking tires but after I asked about the ZX-4RR a few times, he said I should take it for a test drive which is something that dealership never offers. I told him I didn't want to because I'd probably want to buy it afterwards (and I was correct). That was late on Saturday so there wasn't time to do it then. Set up an appointment to do it this morning.

He had the bike out front warming up as I pulled up on my bike. As soon as I turned off my bike I could hear that little 399cc idling like a leaf blower and I was more excited than I probably should have been having just pulled up on a bike with over 200hp.

He scanned my ID and I filled out a waiver and he just told me to ride safe and off I went. Messed with the clutch and brake levers a bit before I pulled off to go do some familiarization circles in the parking lot. First thing I had forgotten from my new ZX-6R is that the brakes have absolutely no friction when fresh from the factory, so I almost bailed off the bike when I went to grab some rear brake and nothing happened *at all*.

Did a few hard stops to build a little braking power and then headed for the stop light to get on the busy highway by the dealership. The light turned green and I turned right. I was immediately panicking that I adjusted the clutch lever too close because I thought the clutch was slipping horribly. The engine was screaming and I was going like 10 mph. Took me a few seconds to process that I needed to shift to second gear *already* so I went to try to quick shifter. Hmm nothing? Oh it's not enabled and there is no obvious way to enable it.. Did normal shifts for the rest of the ride trying to not abuse the poor brand new motor too much, but there is absolutely no way it would be possible to follow the Kawasaki break-in rules on this bike. Every single time the lights turned green I felt like I was burning up the clutch even though I knew it was just the insanely low 1st gear ratio.

The test ride was all straight roads with lots of traffic so it wasn't very exciting but it was enough to tell me something I already knew: I need this bike.

Ergonomics were my biggest concern, but I regret to say that it is more comfortable than my S1krr so there goes my main excuse to not buy it. I also wish it had cruise control since I rode hands free all the time. The other fancy electronics on my S1krr aren't really needed on a bike that makes so little horsepower so that's not really an issue. The suspension felt pretty soft on the ZX-4RR probably because I'm heavy, but not horrendous. The only thing left was value. This bike is so closely priced to a ZX-6R, that I'm not really sure what Kawasaki was smoking but there's something I can't really articulate that makes the ZX-4RR feel special so I guess I kind of get it?

Enough of the long-winded rambling, I'm just waiting to hear back from my salesman on the OTD numbers since I had to leave for work.

What are the chances I actually get to keep standby service for only $4/month for 12 months like this email I just got says?

Do you guys think this is legit and I'll get to keep my standby service for $4/month for another year? Or was this just an automated whoopsie that Tesla will have to backtrack on?

Edit: Went ahead and resumed service. My next billing invoice does actually show only $4, but the true test will be what happens after the next billing cycle.
