Arjuna appears in 6,434 shlokas — here's the top-20 character ranking from a verse-level count [OC]

I counted every named mention across 73,815 canonical shlokas in the Mahabharata (18 parvas, 1,975 chapters) and ranked characters by how often their names appear in the text.

Top by verse mentions:

Rank Character Mentions Chapters
1 Arjuna 6,434 883
2 Krishna 4,475 786
3 Yudhishthira 3,679 1,046
4 Pandavas (collective) 3,437 867
5 Bhima 3,026 589
6 Indra 3,001 937
7 Bharata 2,998 1,146
8 Drona 2,650 515
9 Karna 2,624 409
10 Bhishma 2,390 762

Surprises I noticed:

  • Arjuna has 44% more mentions than Krishna — but Krishna has higher network centrality (PageRank) in the character graph.
  • Yudhishthira appears in more chapters (1,046) than anyone else, even though Arjuna leads in raw mention count.
  • Karna ranks #9 in mentions but appears in only 409 chapters — very concentrated screen time, mostly in the later parvas.
  • Collectives like "Pandavas" and "Kauravas" rank high because the epic often refers to groups, not individuals.

Method caveat: This is automated name matching against English verse text (one mention per shloka per entity, alias-aware)—not a literary "importance" ranking. Epithets, honorifics, and ambiguous names (e.g. Bharata) can inflate or blur counts; "screen time" here means textual name frequency, not narrative weight.

Corpus note: These counts come from one structured digital Mahabharata (18 parvas, 1,975 chapters, 73,815 canonical shlokas) — not the Ganguli translation commonly found online. Name matching was run on our English verse text with alias-aware entity linking. Totals and rankings may differ from Gita Press or other recensions because episode inclusion and verse numbering vary across editions. Treat this as a consistent internal count, not a universal count for every printed Mahabharata.

I generated these counts while working on Sacred Sutra, a Mahabharata reading/mapping app I’m building.

Who do you think is under-mentioned relative to their importance in the story?
