Any tech communities/events in Regensburg?

Hey everyone,

I'll be starting an M.Sc. in Computer Science at Uni Regensburg and curious what the tech scene is like there:

  • Any meetups, hackathons, or dev communities worth joining?
  • Coworking spaces or cafes popular with students/devs?
  • General tips on settling into student life in Regensburg?

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Starting M.Sc. in Regensburg - any dorm tips?

Hi everyone,

I recently got accepted into the M.Sc. Computer Science program at Universität Regensburg, starting Winter Semester 2026/27. I'm currently applying to student residences (Studierendenwerk, KWS, and a few private/church-run ones).

A few things I'd love advice on:

  • Any recommendations for budget-friendly dorms in Regensburg? (Ideally under 400€/month)
  • How long did it realistically take you to get a spot after applying?
  • Any dorms/areas you'd personally recommend or avoid for a grad student?
  • Tips for someone applying before completing Immatrikulation?

Any insight from people who've been through this recently would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Chancenkarte to student residence permit inside Germany

Hi everyone,

I have an Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) valid from April 2026 to April 2027. I also received an admission letter from a German university for a Master’s program.

My question is: Can I apply for a student residence permit (§16b) from inside Germany, or am I required to return to my home country and apply through the embassy?

If anyone has done this or knows how Ausländerbehörde handles it in practice, I’d really appreciate your experience.

Thanks.

27, accepted into a German master's program, and afraid of making the wrong choice

Hi everyone,

This has been occupying my mind for almost a year now, and I've reached a point where I think I need to hear perspectives other than my own.

A bit of background: I'm a 27-year-old software engineer from a developing country. I have a stable job in the finance sector that pays slightly above average. For as long as I can remember, I've dreamed about living in a calmer, safer, more just society, preferably somewhere in Europe.

A while ago, I received Germany's Opportunity Card, which is essentially a one-year job seeker visa. However, because I don't have a huge financial cushion and because of the current uncertainty in tech and AI-related layoffs, I didn't feel comfortable taking that risk.

Recently, I was admitted to a German university for a master's degree. Pursuing it would mean leaving my current job. Financially, I can manage it, but I'm completely lost about what decision to make.

Part of me worries that I'll regret putting my career on hold. But another part of me wonders: what if I move there, build a life for myself, and realize that this was exactly what I'd been looking for all along?

The uncertainty is eating me alive. Has anyone here faced a similar crossroads? I'd genuinely appreciate any advice or perspective.

Uni Regensburg emailed me, but no admission letter yet?

Hi everyone,

I applied for the MSc Computer Science at Universität Regensburg.

I received the "Application Outcome" email 4 days ago, which informed me that my evaluation was positive, but I still haven't received the official admission letter from the Registrar's Office.

Has anyone else been in the same situation? How long did it take for your admission letter to arrive?

Thanks!
