im a bit overwhelmed by all the different things people say to do for pupation.

ive built a small incubator with a heat mat and i put the three large ones (3-5 cm) into cups filled with a compost/coco fibre/sand mixture and gave them fish flakes and bee pollen but it immediately molded.

im now considering either having them without any substrate as i saw in a 2024 yt video by bugsnstuff, or to keep them in organic substrate but not give them any food that would mold immediately. idk what the better course of action would be because i dont know wether they are really ready to pupate yet.

or do they really just start to pupate once they are in the incubator?

TLDR: food but no substrate, substrate but no food, or is there a way to keep food from molding on substrate?

thx

how does the food not mold??

ive had my babies in an incubator for literally one night and the food was overgrown by mold. granted, the humidity was a bit high at 94% but i doubt that it would be significantly different at 70. i have them in little plastic cups with like 4 cm of a sand/soil mixture. i even have springtails in there to hypothetically keep the mold down.

should i just keep them on a paper towel or something and skip the substrate entirely? hpw does other peoples food not completely mold immediately?

barklice

i have a problem with barklice in my terrarium. ive previously dealt with it by baking the whole thing (minus beetles and plants of course) in the oven at like 110°C but i dont want to keep doing that. ive thought of introducing pseudoscorpions as predators but i cant find a place that sells them for a reasonable price and they would have to be tolerant of quite arid conditions. what can i do to keep the population in Check?

im fine with some as a cleanup crew but its just getting out of hand

[OC] free swimming raptorial goose barnacle descendant

a goose barnacle descendant that evolved to actively hunt fish and other marine animals with modified raptorial cirri. They started out as facultative ambush predators but evolved to detach from the substrate and swim using a modified peduncle convergently having evolved a whale like tail. the first pair of cirri evolved into sensory structures with chemoreceptive and tactile function. the rudimentary nauplius eye and lateral eyes have undergone rapid evolution, becoming true (simple) eyes, uniquely three seperate ones, giving the barnacle remarkable 3D vision. one pair of cirri evolved to resemble pectoral fins, and have a similar function. Their life cycle is pretty similar to other barnacles, with a nauplius and cyprid stage, but with the exception that the barnacle detaches from the substrate after the first molt.

i really like this because the barnacle is dorso-ventrally as well as anterior-posteriorly switched compared to other crustaceans, somewhat convergently evolving the deuterostome condition.

still looking for a name. suggestions welcome

[OC] if an animal were to evolve similar raptorial appendages to the ones of Anomalocaris, would there be a reason why they would likely curl downwards or could they just as well curl upwards?

like is there a reason why convergent structures couldn't or wouldn't be like in the bottom picture? having them curl upwards seems cumbersome for some reason bit i can't think of a reason why it would be implausible. underwater gravity wouldn't be much of a factor so that's not it.

What did i find???

Weird nest cluster thing I found in Germany. Looks like a huge amount of pupa husks in a large mat of fibrous stuff and granules of something dirt like. Like half a meter long. i guess some kind of fly or moth? what is this??

my beetles are lesbian

since last week ive seen them tease each other with their antennae. the only male died last summer... they are behaving just like he did... are they just gay?

i planted my plants outside because its getting warm where i live but the weather report says its gonna get colder at night the next days, with 6°C being the minimum temperature.

Will they be okay?

or do i need to get them inside again for another few weeks?
