My theory about Far Beyond The Stars

Sisko casts the people from his real life in his 'vision' in a way that reveals some subconscious feelings he has about them:

He secretly feels slightly intimidated by Worf but also respects him, who he casts as a cool wealthy baseball player whos more self confident than Benny and flirts with his girlfriend in front of him. Worf after all is the flashy former security officer from Starfleets flagship and is a bit of a name within the Klingon empire itself. Sisko maybe feels a bit uncomfortable having someone like that working beneath him.

Deep down he doesn't fully trust Odo, hence why he casts him as someone who isn't 'bad' but is a little too willing to cede to a corrupt authority or defend bigotry and oppression. After all Odo was the guy who worked for the Cardassians even if he feels guilty about it, and who came very close to betraying Siskos friends on the station in season 6.

He views Quark as someone who despite his abrasive and self centered personality, ultimately does have a moral center and will do the right thing in the end. We see this come up a lot in the show up to this point.

Is there a reason evil and stupidity usually wins?

Thinking about that Australian politician hammering a nail into a literal coffin labelled Net Zero.

Also how pretty much every religion in history has been built around the idea that we live in a fundamentally corrupt world.

Why is it all like this.

Why no Austin Powers nostalgia bait revival

Is it because everyone involved feels guilty about Verne Troyer?

Genuine question it feels like otherwise it would be the perfect time for it, Ali Gi of all things is getting the nostalgia bait sequel.

The Odyssey needed to make a choice between stylism or not

Saw it earlier and it felt like either it needed to be 'realistic' and try and capture the look of Mycenaean Greece (which to a modern audience would probably feel very alien and novel) or go for exaggerated stylism (remember when we had Shakespeare movies where the setting was a modern high school or Sengoku Japan or a interwar fascist dictatorship). It feels like what we got was generic fantasy Greece mythos aesthetic but passed through the Nolan filter that makes everything look like a generic heist movie.

Was thinking about the 2011 movie Immortals, that movie had a really memorable visual style that was kind of weird and ugly but at least I remember it. I feel like its been a couple of hours and I already cant visually remember half the scenes in the Odyssey.

In the UK Civil Service jobs are all paid like half of what you could get doing the same job in a private company, and the unwritten attraction is that the expectations are way lower and you basically can't get fired.

This feels like a bad system.

Does being a Landlord just make you like that?

Thinking today about how pretty much everyone I know whos rented in their life has had bad experiences with pretty much every Landlord they've had, or if they describe their Landlord as 'good' it quickly becomes apparent that just means that they begrudgingly fulfil their base legal obligations.

So many popular movements and revolts throughout history have had anger against landlords and landlordism as a driving force, does renting a house out to someone just unlock some ancient prehistoric evil in people or what.

Been watching that French Revolution TV movie that got linked yesterday on youtube

Shoutout to the person that restored and posted it. Taking the time to restore and resub a 40 plus year old TV movie so you can add annotations to the subtitles explaining how the movie is full of Dantonist lies is a level of dedicated hater we should all aspire to.

[PS2] Using disk drives for different models

My original PS2, a SCHP-50003, has been broken with a busted power board for a while. I bought a second hand SCHP-39003 today which boots fine but seems to have a dodgy disk drive, it wont open when the console is on its side, it makes some concerning buzzing noises when running and either cant read disks or reads them but has massively long load times.

I remember the 50003's disk drive worked fine, would I have any compatibility issues transferring the drive into the 39003? Is there any other cleaning/maintenance options I should try first?

People online talking histrionically about how the UK has no real nature any more

Its a weird genre of vaguely leftist seethe posting I've been seeing more and more about how you shouldn't enjoy the British countryside because don't you know Britain used to be covered in forests and it was all cut down for farmland and ruined the biodiversity, I remember Owen Jones even posted a photo of a field of sunflowers on twitter one time and called it an 'industrial estate'.

Like yeah I get the point being made in abstract terms, but you're seething at the Celts back in the Iron Age. I'm sorry Britain didn’t manage to avoid the effects of the Neolithic Revolution, literally who are these posts aimed at? The only ones ive seen that are half reasonable are the people talking about Highland deforestation for cattle because at least that happened within the last millennium and was forced on them somewhat.

Doing oil painting because it feels more like 'real' painting

Started painting about a year ago, I started with acrylics and have dabbled in watercolor but focusing on oil now. I realise part of the appeal of oil is it kind of panders to my vanity, with acrylics and watercolor you can buy multi packs of cheap paints from the craft section at a discount store, use a paper plate as a palette and flush the paint water down the sink when you're done (I know now youre not meant to do this but you get the idea).

With oil you've got go out and buy a bunch of solvents and thinners and carefully decant them into jars, along with paint knives and a glass palette and shit and you've got to properly ventilate the room so you dont get a headache, and you have to learn terms like impasto and fat over lean so you dont end up producing a sloppy mess, plus the cleanup takes several times as long. Idk if my bad amateur paintings are looking any better since the transition but I appreciate getting to larp as a proper artist.

Also its encouraging me to get a new job that pays enough that I can move to a house with a shed for all this crap.

Is sex therapy quackery or is that only on TV

Recently watched an episode of this new show we've got here called Virgin Island with some friends, basically it's putting a bunch of adult virgins on a island with a team of sex therapists to 'cure' them or whatever. It's tacky and ethically questionable but mainly I was thinking about the sex therapists in the show.

The women therapists all seem to be divided between Pant suit wearing girlboss grifter types and well intentioned but woolly headed hippies who think they can treat someone's CPTSD with a breathing exercise they came up with.

The male therapists all universally have rancid vibes, deeply sinister. There's one scene where they take this girl whos body image issues bring her to tears when she imagines someone physically touching her, and they leave her along with this guy with tribal tats and cold shark eyes with the implication she can sleep with him if she wants? It's jarring when you've got Barbara Streisand from Meet the Fockers sitting next to Piter De Viers.

That's the only other media depiction of sex therapy I can think of (where it's generally had as a punchline anyways). Is it more of a serious thing IRL?

[Spoilers PUBLISHED] The Lannisters seem to get away with a lot in GOT

Idk if this is just a product of it being the first book and GRRM was still working out the kinks of the universe, but it was pointed out to me recently in a different thread how weird it is that during the chapter following the fight between Arya and Joffrey, Ned seems genuinely worried that his men need to find her first because the Lannister retainers might straight up kill her if they find her.

Like Ned is Warden of the North and head of one of the most powerful houses in Westeros, the entire inciting event for the war that makes up most of the first couple of books is him being executed unjustly. Hes also best friends with the actual king. Surely the thought shouldn't even cross his mind that a rank and file Lannister footman would risk hurting the child of someone like that just because Cersei said so.

Got me thinking its a running theme in the book, Jamie attacks Ned's men with zero consequence, Cersei does whatever she wants and everyone is scared of her seemingly to include her husband the king, and Tywin felt confident ordering the Mountain to effectively invade the riverlands under flimsy pretenses. How has a noble family that behaves like this survived this long, why have the other noble families not ganged up to get rid of them years ago.

Are British youths particularly psychotic?

I feel like growing up here its difficult for me to be objective since I kind of assumed that a lot of teenagers being 'creatures of pure Id', to steal the line from Disco Elysium, is a universal experience, but recently I've noticed a theme of people who visit the UK concluding that British teenagers are unusually scary. Anyone who's visited the UK able to offer a perspective on this?

All religions can be great if only they're being exposed by theologian philosophers

People in the pre modern era had it right, religion and the nature of God and the soul are things to be discussed and reflected upon by a long bearded Confucian Sages on a mountain top or a hair shirt wearing monk in the cloister of a remote monastery, not something for a 9-5 office worker to have some opinions on or to be used as a political slogan.

God is a complex metaphysical concept to allow us to express the relationship between the physical and spiritual, of course he's not an invisible superhero who lives in the sky, what are you eight years old.

fucked up the title but you get the idea

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/predicting-harm-among-incels-involuntary-celibates/predicting-harm-among-incels-involuntary-celibates-the-roles-of-mental-health-ideological-belief-and-social-networking-accessible

I havent read the whole thing but its interesting right at the top it basically concludes most most aren't right wing, are deeply mentally ill to the point of being suicidal and aren't even particularly violent towards other people.

That being said I would also say It feels like at a glance this study says more about the sort of person who would admit to being an 'incel' in a government survey.
