Colm Meaney - IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award

Colm Meaney - IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award

This actually happened last year but I didn't know about it until youtube randomly decided to show me the video so I'm sharing in case others wanna see it too. Colm Meaney got a lifetime achievement award from the Irish Film and Television Academy. Well deserved imo, he's a great actor. The video also has some clips from Star Trek of course, haha.

I just finished DS9 Series 27 years later for the first time.

I normally don't actively pursue anything in the sci-fi genre. My husband started watching it, and I joined in. I have to say, I was hooked! I absolutely loved, loved, loved this series. There were a few flaws, some boring episodes, but overall, I really liked it. I cried like crazy over Odo's decision at the end because it had several meanings: saving other species by ending the war while also saving his own race, all while being the loving Changeling we all adored. He was always grumpy and emotionally unavailable, until it came to Nerys and him doing this showed that indeed he loved the humanoids.

Some of the flaws and storylines that I feel were not explored enough, or at least should have happened:

  • Jake was about the same age as Ziyal. Why wasn't he at least a friend to her? They both lost their mothers and had fathers who were in control of others. It just seemed like something they could have bonded over, and Jake could have been her biggest ally. Also, for as young as Jake was, he only dated two women briefly. He never had any real romantic interests, and neither did Nog.
  • Ziyal was supposed to be under Kira's care, yet we never really saw them together on the station. There were no personal moments, no bonding, and no real indication of Kira caring for Ziyal. Kira barely seemed to check in on her or make sure she was okay. Kira went to Bajor and on various dangerous missions without a word about Ziyal, her safety, or who was caring for her. We never even saw Ziyal say goodbye to Kira before she left on missions. I feel like that entire storyline was a missed opportunity.
  • I did like the addition of Worf. He was a welcome addition, and his storylines always made sense. I absolutely loved the Klingon storylines. What didn't make sense to me was Worf's relationship with Ezri. It was a long, boring, repetitive, and whiny relationship. They sleep together, and then it's done and over with. It just seemed unnecessary.
  • Keiko was definitely a missed opportunity. Sisko had a garden where he grew fresh vegetables, so I think Keiko could have been much more involved with that and with finding plants that could be used for cures. Perhaps she could have even found a cure for Odo. She could have worked more in Bashir's lab while maintaining a natural plant and garden environment. There was so much potential there for her character.
  • Biggest flaw: Sisko leaves the station as the Cardassian will take over. Jake stays behind. As a father, he should have beamed him aboard the ship and said "Nope, you are not staying! End of story!" Jake added nothing to the new occupation. He was just whiney kid who thought he was a "reporter" where his reports went no where! It was completely unnecessary having him there.

I do wish there had been more women aboard. The show was heavily dominated by men, although I didn't mind it. It was just a little bit of wishful thinking on my part. I did love the energy between Nerys and Jadzia, as well as some of the female guest stars, like the Kai, the female Changeling, and, of course, Keiko.

Right now, I'm watching "What We Left Behind", and I'm loving Marc Alaimo's statements about never getting any praise when the showrunner tells him, "You kept coming back because the writers loved you. That's how you know they liked you!" He went on to say that Marc's performances elevated the other actors in his scenes because they had to meet him at his level, which I found absolutely true. One of the best moments is Louise Fletcher performing with him. You can see the shift in her performance when she's working with him. I absolutely loved it!!

Also, that storyline completely shocked me, but I loved it at the same time!

Anyways, thanks for reading my ramblings. I love this sub. I want to watch the series again!

Does anyone really like Ezri Dax?

If so, what do you like about her character? I’m watching DS9 for the first time and am up to Prodigal Daughter. It seems like a throwaway episode during crunch time. I mean, the series is wrapping up and The Dominion War is nearing its conclusion. I don’t know why they would waste an entire episode on this substitute Dax. It’s bad enough we lost Jadzia, why shove Ezri down our throats?

Why didn't Julian experience discrimination in "far beyond the stars," ?

Apologies if this has been asked already.

I know that the episode mostly focuses on racism against African American people, but other forms of discrimination are depicted, like the sexism Kira faces.

Given India's/Pakistan's colonial history, and general attitudes of whiteness being the ideal, why isn’t Julian subjected to racism the way other dark skinned characters are? Especially with a foreign/non-european name like "Bashir,"?

Edit;

As many have pointed out, his name was "Julian Eaton" not Bashir in this episode. My mistake! It must've completely gone over my head!

Also, I'm thrilled by the amount of interesting perspectives and opinions! Thanks for all the engagement guys, nothing makes me happier than having an excuse to think and talk about deep space nine!

Is Star Trek the ultimate Incel cure?

I just ask because there's so many poignant episodes from DS9 and TNG that remind me of the incels.

You got Geordi generating a fake AI GF in the holosuite and create a relationship with her. You got Barclay basically copying folks on the ship and basically banging them in the holodeck. Yet it these episodes the folks around them are like my goodness, let us help you and they make them slightly less incelish.

You got that episode of DS9 where basically Vic Fontaine teaches Vic to just use practice and be confident and talk to women.

It's like they already knew about these incels and were already guiding them out of it. Is this how the previous generations were saved versus idiots like Rogan ?

Worf doesn't act like that because he's Klingon. It's because he's Russian.

Worf is reserved with his emotions, doesn't partake in small talk, and doesn't smile unless he's feeling genuine joy.

Klingons are loud and boisterous. They sing and fight, they laugh and slap each other on the back.

Worf is not a part of Klingon culture, he respects the Philosophy of ancient Klingon wisdom and practices Klingon religious beliefs, but he acts much more like a Russian in social situations.

Also, I don't think Worf speaks english. He's been speaking Russian this whole time.

[additional head cannon] : it was part of the Khitomer Accords that Klingon never be translated by Federation universal translators (Photoshop not AI)

Saw a familiar face while watching Ted clips.

I didn’t realize she was still acting tbh. I thought she was only in DS9.

Petition to explicitly ban ai slop from this sub

At this point you all know the arguments against ai. I, along with most other people, are tired of seeing it everywhere.

Mr Bean is Gul Dukats Ancestor

Hello, I have a theory that Mr Bean is Gul Dukats Ancestor. I believe this because i feel as though Mr Bean and Gul Dukat have many similarities such as being sneaky, plotting evil, child kidnapper, attempted Murder along with many others.

In the Mr Bean TV series, in the introduction you see a light before mr Bean falling down onto earth. I think that this is the Carsassians exlileing Mr Bean onto earth but during this time Mr Bean would be forced to wear a human disguise.

Mr Bean is just as evil as Gul Dukat.

I have only watched the Entirety of season 1 and I am currently on the 2nd season about to watch Crossover. Please NO SPOILERS.

Why do the Dax hosts have human names?

Some of them have human-adjacent names (Emony, sounds like Ebony, Torias, sounds like Tobias, Audrid, sounds like Audrey, Lela, sounds like Lila).

Some of them have straight up human names (Tobin, Jadzia, Ezri, Curzon, though Curzon is a surname).

Even Dax itself is a human name.

You'd think the Trills had early first contact with Earth, or something.

Did anyone else think the last scene of DS9 was gonna be like, a fade in shot to a 1950s book store window and inside you can see Benny doing a "meet the author" kinda thing implying he published DS9

Latest sword

I grew up a star trek fan, I remember seeing "Into The Darkness" and "Beyond" in theaters, and watching episodes with my dad who grew up on the original series, recently I've gotten back into star trek, and my dad being proud, gifted me this.
