This was my first time charging at a public L2 charger, on 8/14/11. At the time, those chargers were few and far between, and of course DCFC did not yet exist. Tesla had just released an adapter cable to allow the Roadster to charge from an L2 charger with a J1772 connector.

It's pretty amazing how far the charging infrastructure has come in just fifteen years.

Police Lightnings

Pleasant Ridge MI police have two Lightning patrol vehicles, one marked and one unmarked.

Mobile charging

Interesting concept. Would have been cool to see a Lightning used for this.

Gordie Howe International Bridge

Drove across this beautiful bridge this afternoon. Why is there so little traffic?

44 charges!

Before April of this year, I had never heard of iONNA. Since then, I've charged at their locations 44 times. I still haven't experienced one of the fancy Rechargeries with a lounge, but I bet I'll run across one before very much longer.

Connectivity troubleshooting tip

I've been having intermittent issues with my truck failing to communicate with the Ford app. It's gotten worse, to the point where the app data has not updated in a week. I've tried all of the usual reset remedies, without any luck. Today I dug a bit deeper, going into the Bezel diagnostic menu on the Sync screen. I found an option that I wasn't aware of, "Enable connectivity icons". When enabled it displays icons for ECG, TCU, Wi-Fi, cellular, and ?? at the top of the Sync screen. Might be helpful when trying to diagnose an intermittent problem. Here's how to do it:

Set the Sync screen to either AM or FM.
Enter the Bezel menu. On my 12" screen you do this by holding down the >| on the steering wheel and the >>| on the radio controls for a few seconds. 15" screen is similar but not exactly the same, you can Google it.
After a short audio test, the Bezel menu comes up.
Select "Testing settings".
Toggle "Enable connectivity icons" on.

My suspicion is that my TCU has finally failed completely, so this probably isn't going to help me, but it might help someone else in narrowing down an issue. In the displayed icons I'm assuming that green is good and red is bad. I'm not sure what the magnifying glass icon represents. Diagnostic data maybe?

Live!

We have liftoff! The Whitestown Indiana location is now live, with the usual $0.20/kWh introductory pricing.
And because I once complained about a worn-out squeegee at a different iONNA location, this one appears to have never been used and is in perfect condition :)

Early Model S promo card

Check out those specs: 5-minute battery swap! And in true Tesla fashion, "Deliveries begin in 2011" did not happen :)

So close

Wally's in Whitestown Indiana. Looks like it's ready to go, even the squeegees are there. Maybe just waiting for the cabinets to be commissioned? I'm guessing that the "Accessible EV charging - use last" signs at every single stall might be a mistake though.

More progress at Whitestown IN

Today a crew is putting down the pavement markings. Other than that the location appears to be mostly finished. Looks like there won’t be a canopy here.

Progress at Whitestown IN location

The cabinets that were still on pallets last week have all been mounted on their concrete pads, so there’s some progress. This should be a great location, easy access from I-65, and enough to do at the new Wally’s to keep you occupied while charging.

Tesla Plug & Charge

It would be nice if Tesla implemented Plug & Charge at non-Tesla DCFCs. Unfortunately they have no incentive to do so - why make it easier to charge at a competitor’s location?

iONNA DCFCs coming to the new Wally’s in Whitestown IN

5 cabinets are still on pallets. Electrical has been stubbed in but concrete pads haven’t been poured yet.

Fifteen years

I just scrolled back through my history on the ChargePoint app, and it goes back almost fifteen years! Those first 2011 charges would have been for my second road trip in my 2010 Tesla Roadster. On the first road trip, a year earlier, there were no public chargers on my route. Had to charge at campgrounds.

Close call with a deer

My 2025 M3 braked hard about 2 seconds before a deer crossed in front of me. Hauled it down from 70+ mph to under 30. FSD 14.3.3
