Recording Academy May Revamp New Asian Pop Category For 2027 Awards

“The Grammy organization exists to serve all music people, and part of that is working to ensure that no voice or community gets overlooked or misunderstood,” Mason said in a statement on Friday (Aug. 14). “It’s clear from our numerous conversations with many stakeholders over the past two weeks that, regardless of our intent and desire to be even more inclusive, there are some artists in this space who feel that this category isn’t representing the music they work so hard to create, in the way they wish. As a musician myself, I take that to heart"

Is BTS boycotting the Grammys?

I saw this being shared by a user on Twitter and found it interesting. It is a conversation with Professor Michelle Cho, Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto speaking with CBC. Here are some highlights:

“The Recording Academy has been doing this thing of carving up the world into different regions, almost in order to contain global artists and also to maintain American artists and the U.S. as the center. So they're asking, I think, the Recording Academy to reconsider that logic.

It's just nonsensical to impose geography as a genre category. It's not only an outdated way of understanding how media works and circulates around the world, but it's also, frankly, a colonial gesture.”

"It's interesting because, you know, the last Grammys from 2025 had the biggest showing from the K-pop industry that we've seen thus far. You had "Golden" from KPop Demon Hunters, which is a product of K-pop industry's music professionals, win an award. It's actually the first K-pop song to win a Grammy.

And also, you had big entries in the pop categories from Rosé of BLACKPINK for "APT." with Bruno Mars, and also KATSEYE.

So it's interesting, again, that the more space K-pop as an industry is taking up in the soundscape of North America, the quicker to contain it. Or that seems to be the gesture — by announcing this new category suddenly after that banner year."

(I dont think they count KATSEYE as kpop there, since they are half managed by an american label)

So... any bets on us getting Heartbeat or Could You Turn Off Your Cell Phone?

I think those would be very hard to get. The oldest non single songs have not been used a lot in this segment and Heartbeat being an OST... what do you guys think?

BTS: Grammy Decision: Was the Band Getting Ahead of Another Awards Show Sidelining? (Critic's Take)

"GRAMMYs has always stressed that Awards and nominations are not and should not be based on commercial success. Still, an artist posting those numbers should not be asking to be let in; they’re already here and should be allowed to take up as much space as they’ve earned — regardless of perceived public acknowledgment.

BTS is not turning down recognition. They are turning down a version of recognition they think is smaller than the one their year has already earned, and doing so at the moment that could certainly deliver the trophy they spent so many years chasing. As noted above, “SWIM” would not be eligible in the Asian pop category, but such album standouts as “Hooligan,” “2.0,” “Aliens” and “Body to Body” — the last of which reinterprets the Korean folk song the LP is named after — are easily Grammy-worthy, and BTS’ name recognition alone could have led to the Academy giving them their first trophy. Future releases and solo projects could likely produce several more. But BTS has never been one to rest on past accomplishments, and ARIRANG is a specifically globally focused record that brought in a wave of new collaborators to shake up the formula that had already earned them six No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 and six No. 1 singles on the Hot 100; with ARIRANG‘s release, their total on both tallies is up to seven.

RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook may not have a better shot at their first group Grammy than the one they just declined. But they seemed to have withdrawn because the alternative was more than likely to win in a way that would confirm a premise they have spent their entire careers disproving: that their music is a regional variant or an alternative to the mainstream rather than part of general pop culture itself.

#BTS have seen this movie before and they know how it ends, but this time they’re leaving before the finale and telling everyone why on the way out."

I would read the full thing, it even mentions VMA in 2019 and the creation of kpop categories in award shows.

I know Jeff Benjamin is not liked in armys spaces but its a good read and Billboard is looked at in the business.

Jin for ELLE Korea: ‘UNTAMED’

”There is a rare creature that occasionally appears at the highest point of the city.“ Luckily, we found it today.

Another side of Jin reveals itself. Further. Deeper. Untamed, entirely in his own way. Watch Jin in motion, dressed in the latest Gucci menswear collection, in the new fashion film.

Another side indeed. This is very different from his usual magazine covers.

Here, we highlight the songs that make up the kaleidoscope that is BTS’ message — of love for yourself and others, of introspection, of connection, and, of course, even a healthy bit of anarchy.
