Few pointers about MS new Z-Series 1.2L 3-cylinder
At first I was little reluctant about driving the new 3cyl NA petrol from MS but anyways I spent few kms with the MT and AMT, here are few pointers from my side
Some good things to be pointed out:
- Maruti has tuned this 3-cyl engine for better low end torque. It pulls cleanly from low speeds, making it very tractable in day to day traffic.
- The 5speed MT is a highlight of the car. The gear shifts are short and slick. MT should be the preferred choice for those who enjoys driving.
- The 3cyl engine note is sporty when revved
- The software tuning has evolved for AMT, for city commuting it is convenient and manages gear changes good enough. A reliable stress free AMT and costs less than traditional automatic.
Some not so good things:
- Compared to the previous 4cyl one the new 3cyl is lower in power and it lacks the high revving nature of the 4cyl one
- Being a 3cyl it cannot match the smoothness of the outgoing 4cyl there are noticeable vibrations at idle.
- The AMT jerkiness and slow response is still noticeable during gear changes
- There's a lack of topend punch as it doesn't have the power of the older k series engine, overtaking vehicles on highways needs proper planning and downshifting
She was significantly underutilized and essentially wasted in LIK.
This duo have absolutely become the forgotten options in the Indian SUV market.
