I hate the new Reveries system

I haven't unlocked a single euphoria since the new update dropped because I'm trying to conserve my materials. I literally have every single meta team in the game and I can't clear the first boss stage. The interface is intentionally complicated and I don't understand what the purpose of building your own boss is. Given that I'm still at 450m-IV in the permanent version it might just be a skill issue but besides that it's just not fun at all. I also liked the old version with the three bosses a lot more, it was fun to allocate characters and figure things out.

What the book vs the movie did best: an unscientific review

Movie:

  1. The scene where Grace passes out and Rocky left his life support pod. In the book, it felt a little clinical and Grace didn't show much emotion after so it felt rather anticlimatic. The movie scene was incredibly moving and people around me in the theater were sobbing the entire time. The climax of the film/book done right.
  2. The Stratt singing scene. I think the movie did such a great job humanizing her; in the book she felt merely like a plot device. I think Weir is great at plot but his characterization isn't the strongest (Grace felt very clinical at times) but the movie did a great time making Grace dorky and Stratt tragic.
  3. Cutting the coma plot. I agree with Weir, it was a plot device and it didn't really need to exist. Comas are already pretty dangerous and Grace, who trained with the astronauts (to test equipment I believe) and was the primary astrophage scientist was the logical next step.
  4. Mental health room. Genuinely such a great addition. Besides being visually beautiful, it was also incredibly sad. The scenes where he goes fishing or sits on a beach highlighted the contrast between his sterile surroundings and his deep longing to go back home. The scenes where he shows Rocky scenes from Earth was really cool and a great way to show them bonding.
  5. The send off of his dead crewmates. Although I felt the crewmates were definitely better characterized in the book, there was something just indescribably sad seeing the sendoff visually, knowing their bodies would never decay and forever be lost to the vastness of space. The photographs were an added punch in the gut--Yao having a baby/wife and Ilukyhina sneaking into an important building felt so human. It made Grace feel so much more alone.
  6. Carl. I liked how they turned a few sentences from the book into a full on character moment. It was both funny and then turned tragic at the end when Carl "betrayed" Grace and tells him he'll do great.
  7. The bag. I really like the detail that Grace's bag's tag was handwritten and the little fox charm. I also like his characterization from the items in the bag, even before he remembers who he is we know he's a dork who loves cringe science jokes.
  8. Similarly, the save the world posters he puts on Rocky's walls while he's in a coma-like state. Although not confirmed, I think the existence of them implies that somebody went to Grace's class and got them to draw the posters.
  9. Of course the visuals. Many of them were beautiful and the posters are gorgeous. I liked how they highlighted how alone Grace was--just a single ship floating through the vastness of the cosmos. I liked how it also highlighted the absurd juxtaposition between his previous life as a small town schoolteacher and now a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders.
  10. The recordings. Not so much something I loved per se but it was such a great way to adapt the first person narrative in the book to narration in the movie.
  11. Soundtrack. Listening to it right now and it's so good. I especially loved the use of the Beatles song while the beetles are detaching and the Sign of the Times. Good classic references that evoke nostalgia and a sense of home.
  12. What was removed. I think the pacing in the second half of the book gets a little bogged down as Weir describes making chains for two weeks, manually cleaning the fuel tanks, using the beetle engines for fuel, Grace almost killing Rocky with his makeshift fan, and the initial Tauamobea infection, the movie cutting this really cleaned up the pacing after the climax.

Not a fan: I wasn't a big fan of Rocky spaceship tour, it didn't provide much in terms of story and I would rather have allocated that time to something else, even boring science explanations. Also didn't like the "fist my bump" humor, I felt like Rocky was a little lobotomized in the film and infantilized. I also felt like the humor went a little overboard sometimes, especially in the scene where he's running from Stratt's soldiers to prevent being conscripted. That scene wasn't supposed to be funny and although his final memories of the scene are still sad I didn't like the emotional contrast.

Book:

  1. The cut scenes from the book. I know that Leclerc/blowing up Antartica and paving the Sahara is not necessary for the plot in the movie but by god was it peak. The scene where Stratt attends the copyright/patent hearing and then walks out with the army flanking her was incredibly aura. I think all of these were not just super cool demo of science but also demonstrated the incredible gravity of the situation and how much was really at stake.
  2. Grace's original motives. In the book, after the first 3 days of the astrophage sample, he goes back to his class and tries to continue on normally but realizes he wants to save his kids, his classroom. He wants to be part of the project compared to the movie where he's butthurt about being kicked out. It gives him depth and intent and action that isn't really shown.
  3. The food situation. This one has been rehashed a lot so I'm not going to speak on it much but it makes the character arc a lot more complete. Even disregarding the food situation a single scene where he contemplates how he can't live in 29 PSI or breathe ammonia (basically exist on Rocky's planet) would've worked.
  4. Speaking of character arcs, I wish the scene where Grace finally made his decision was much more explicit. In the book Stratt straight up calls him a piece of shit and a coward. She highlights how he wrote his childish dissertation and abandoned his opinions/career, could never hold a relationship, and became a schoolteacher to receive unlimited adulation from his students. It makes his character so much more explicit and the betrayal so much more impactful.
  5. Related to this, the reveal that Stratt caused the amnesia and not the coma. I loved this reveal. "I can't rely on 99%" was so harsh and it really just solidified Stratt as a character, the betrayal, everything.
  6. Scale. In the book everything felt much more grounded and realistic. The fact Stratt was backed by the UN, the different meetings with multiple leading space organizations, the specialists and scientists like Dimitri and Dr. Lokken all served to make the Earth flashbacks much more fascinating.
  7. The logistics of communication and science. I liked how they both started with science and it was cool to see how both species shared similar things like clocks or base 6. Also the detail of Rocky having perfect photographic memory was very fascinating and his constant math conversion. I also liked the description of Eridian biology and such, although I understand it had to be cut the inner nerd in me loved it.
  8. Explanation of the nitrogen situation, in the movies there's literally just one line about how he bred nitrogen resistant Tauamobea but the actual situation really put into perspective how much work Grace did and also the end of why the Taumobea escaped.
  9. Minor thing but Grace's mental breakdowns. In the movie it's shown he goes hippie mode and sips vodka but in the book especially in the beginning he has a lot of mental breakdowns and panic attacks, which I would've liked to see at least one of in the movie. It felt like he adjusted too quickly.
  10. Food bags. I know this is a very little thing but I think it would've been cool in the movie to signal time passing through the Day 1 Meal 1 type bags.

Do the dorms have kitchens

I have some dietary restrictions so I want to cook for myself at Princeton, do the dorms for freshmen have kitchens, and if so how are they? Are they prestocked with bowls and utensils and stuff, do they have ovens and stoves, how do people treat other people's ingredients and food? Additional but less important question, do eating clubs have publicly accessible kitchens students can use? Much thanks

Ramen without any preservatives/chemicals?

Hi all, I'm looking for a ramen that doesn't have any artifical preservatives or chemically added flavors. I've been craving ramen super hard recently but due to a medical condition I can't have anything processed. Normal instant ramen is entirely off the table and worsens my condition. I can eat normal noodles but they don't have the same taste as ramen. I'm not sure if the flavor of ramen is exclusively because of the preservatives. Are there any healthy/natural alternatives that taste like ramen but are not excessively processed?

Impulse control

I'm not really looking to lose weight but I am on a medical diet right now and this sub seems to have the most concentration of people struggling with impulse control. Im having a tough time eating healthy, normally it's still a struggle but I've been stressed recently so I've legit worsened my chronic health condition by downing cookies and milk. Any advice? (I'm at a dining hall so its even harder to resist literal free delicious snacks)

Next steps after oral medicine fails?

I've been taking oral mesalmine at max dose with no luck, inflammation and calproctin count has only gone up higher. I wanted to know what the next strongest medicine would be, i.e. are there any other oral medications? I know this is a question to ask my doctor (and I will be tmr), but I am taking a gap year (school-sponsored) next year in a country that may lack extensive medical care. Because of this, I'm wary on starting biologics since I know many of them may have harmful side effects that I can't deal with on the trip, take a long time to see the effects, and require infusion centers which I might not get to access. Are there any other alternatives I can take?

Cancelled but still charged?

I cancelled my membership online on the 16th since the website said 17tj for billing but was still charged for this months membership. I know this might be an issue on my end because billing is ~4 days margin of error, but Im worried because 1) I dont know if I still have to cancel in person if I cancelled online (I received a receipt for it, if thats relevant) and 2) I used my bank account for it, but ive heard that bank accounts have no consumer protection like credit cards and Planet Fitness could potentially infinitely charge me money and lower my credit score (?) I've already given up on recovering this months fee (if anyone knows how I can that would be greatly welcome though), but how do I tell if my membership has been cancelled and I was only charged because I cancelled late, or if my membership is still active?

How to end stories or answers gracefully?

This is more of a public speaking skill, but I've noticed that while I generally can fill up a bulk of a semi-professional response, when it comes to endings I end with a "so yeah" or something weak. Endings are super important in conversations (last impression) and I'd like to learn how to get better. Of course I know that practice makes perfect, but does anyone have specific tips or tricks on it?

Cheng Heguang is truly the goat

I didn't expect to like him as much as I did but man he genuinely locked tf in. Like telling Heron to seal him in the tree to save everyone was a goated move. Also that last cutscene with all the knives around him was badass asf
