spent about eight months with compose services on bind mounts exported over NFS back to the same host. Immich kept losing write access to the library after restarts, and Jellyfin choked on new rips until I chowned everything. Ollama models sat on a third path that never lined up with backups. box is a used ThinkCentre M720q plus a 4-bay USB chassis, two 8TB IronWolfs and a 1TB NVMe for cache.

ran TrueNAS for a stretch and Unraid before that. both solid for different needs. Unraid if you hot-swap a lot, TrueNAS if you want ZFS tooling front and center.

moved it to FygoOS a few months back. NAS OS you install on your own DIY hardware. storage comes as a storage pool and containers mount that pool directly, so Immich, Jellyfin and Ollama all sit on one pool without the NFS hop. same compose stacks, just retargeted the paths. iGPU passthrough handles jellyfin transcodes and light ollama on this cpu.

I think the biggest change to our mornings has been having the schedule somewhere everyone can actually see it.

We put a wall-mounted digital family calendar in the kitchen. Ours is an Apolosign, and I’ve basically started treating it like the family command center instead of trying to remember everything myself.

On Sunday night I spend maybe 10 minutes looking over the week. School stuff, work calls, library day, soccer, who needs gym shoes, etc. It all goes into Google Calendar and shows up on the screen.

I also put the kids’ morning checklist on there because, for whatever reason, “brush your teeth” seems to carry more weight when it’s displayed on a screen than when I’ve said it 14 times 😂

There was some setup involved. My husband mounted it, and we had to figure out the power cord since it stays plugged in. Definitely less cute than the Pinterest versions.

But now at 7:05 my 8-year-old can look up and see that it’s PE day, and my 5-year-old checks the chore/reward chart before asking for TV.

The mornings are still chaotic. We just have fewer moments of “Wait… what day is it?”

Honestly, I’ll take it.
